Page 2: Why you should eat food with hands

In this modern society, we’ve

always heard that eating food with

hands is unhygienic but you won’t

believe that it is even more hygienic

than eating with a spoon or a fork.

Here are 10 reasons why you

should eat food with your hands:

1) Vedic Tradition

Eating food with hands is our Vedic Tradition. In western culture, people feel that it is unhygienic to eat food with hands but in our Indian culture, it is said that “eating food with your hands feeds not only the body but also the mind and the spirit”.

4) All senses are engaged

When we are eating food with a spoon or a fork, we can smell it and taste it but when we are eating food with our hands then we can actually feel the texture of the food and enjoy it more. All of our senses are engaged in food which is a good thing.

5) Protects mouth from getting burnt

While eating with a spoon or a fork, we don’t pay much attention on the temperature of the food and sometimes burn our mouth. When we are eating with our hands, we can actually feel the temperature of the food and prevent our mouth from getting burnt.

6) Improves awareness

Being relaxed while eating is very important for one’s health. It has been observed that a person eating with his hands is much more connected to his food as compared to a person eating with a fork or spoon. A person eating with a spoon or fork may be engaged in some other activities too like watching television etc but a person eating food with his hands will be much more aware of what he is eating and more connected with his food.

7) Compels you to maintain good hygiene

Sometimes, we are too lazy to go and wash our hands or clean our nails before eating because we think that we are going to eat with a spoon and there will be no physical contact of our hands with the food. But when a person eats with his hands, he is aware that he is going to touch the food so he himself takes care of his hygiene.

8) Improves Digestion

When we touch our food with hands, our brain prepares our stomach that we are about to eat so our stomach is ready for digesting the food which ultimately results in better digestion.

9) Bacteria

Not all bacteria are harmful. It is believed that our body has a certain kind of bacteria which protects us from the harmful bacteria. This bacteria is also present in our hands and when we eat food with our hands, the pattern of bacteria is maintained and we are protected from the harmful bacteria.

10) Prevents many diseasesAs per Vedic knowledge, our hands and feet consist of the five elements – Heaven, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. Thumb: FireIndex Finger: AirMiddle Finger: HeavenRing Finger: EarthLittle Finger: WaterIf any of these five elements is imbalanced then it might lead to diseases. So when we eat food with our hands, we join our thumb and fingers which maintains the balance between these elements and therefore protects us from different diseases.
