This is the 53rd Annual Bench-Bar Conference of the Allegheny County Bar Association and for over a half century, lawyers and judges havebeen meeting at Seven Springs Mountain Resort, principally to discuss in an informal setting, problems and possible practical solutions toissues confronting the state and federal court systems in western Pennsylvania.

The Bench-Bar Conference has kept our legal community a close-knit one in which both lawyers and judges have treated each other withrespect and professionalism. Over the years there has been a steady give and take between our lawyers and judges. Both have offered andaccepted suggestions that have made our court system better both for the judiciary and lawyers practicing in our courts. The collegiality andcamaraderie that exists in Allegheny County between the bench and bar is unique. The Bench-Bar Conference has been a contributing factorin the continued fostering of this positive relationship.

Why YOU should attend the Bench-Bar Conference

Take advantage of the unbelievably low registration fee of $305 and attend the signature event of the Allegheny County Bar Association.The Bench-Bar Conference includes 14 CLE programs from which to choose and earn up to 8 hours of CLE credits, 4 host receptions, fabulousfood at the outdoor barbecue, breakfasts, lunch, and the grand surf and turf buffet. Enjoy hospitality areas, music, and nightly entertainment.Priced at $305 for early registration, there is no other conference where you will get more value for your dollars. The average cost for CLEalone is $56 per credit hour. Do the math...by attending the Bench-Bar you can easily get two-thirds of your credits and all of the aboveoutlined extras for the registration fee of $305.

Q. What does the registration fee include?A. The Bench-Bar registration fee for full-time Conference registrants includes all educational programs during the Conference, reception,

country barbecue, and late evening reception on Thursday; breakfast, lunch, reception, grand surf and turf buffet, Evening of Comedy,and Monte Carlo Lounge and Dancing Queen Dance Party on Friday; and breakfast on Saturday.

Q. What is the deadline for registration?A. The EARLY registration deadline, which provides for a discounted price, is FRIDAY, MAY 22, 2015.

REGULAR registration deadline is FRIDAY, JUNE 5, 2015 and LATE registration is after FRIDAY, JUNE 5, 2015.No pre-registration will be taken after WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10, 2015.

Q. What if I need to cancel my registration?A. The DEADLINE for Bench-Bar Conference refunds is noon on Friday, June 5, 2015. Requests for refunds must be received in writing,

sent to Dorie Schnippert by fax at 412-261-6438 or by email to [email protected] refunds will be given after June 5, 2015. Refunds will not be processed until July 7, 2015.An administration fee of $50 will be charged for all cancellations.

All events including receptions, meals, entertainment, and programs are adults only.

If you bring children to the conference, arrangements can be made at Seven Springs for babysitting services, and there are a number ofactivities provided by the resort for children.

ALL CLE COURSE MATERIALS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED VIA A LINK TO THE MATERIALS PRIOR TO THE CONFERENCE SO THAT YOU MAYDOWNLOAD ANY MATERIALS YOU WISH TO BRING TO THE CONFERENCE.

NO HARD-COPY MATERIALS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED.

The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 (“BAPCPA”) was the most comprehensive set of revisions to theBankruptcy Code since 1978. BAPCPA made sweeping changes to bankruptcy laws, affecting both consumer and commercial bankruptcies.Our panelists will evaluate the impact of BAPCPA, ten years after its enactment, and provide views on BAPCPA’s successes and failures. President Spar is a brilliant scholar on many subjects. She has appeared on 60 minutes, the News Hour with Jim Lehrer, and ABC World NewsTonight. A political scientist by training, President Spar’s scholarly works have been published in a variety of magazines such as the NewEngland Journal of Medicine, Foreign Affairs, and the Review of International Political Economy. President Spar’s scholarly research focuses on issues of international political economy, examining how rules are established in new andemerging markets and how firms and government together shape the evolving global economy. She is the author of numerous books,including Ruling the Waves: Cycles of Invention, Chaos, and Wealth from the Compass to the Internet (2001); The Baby Business: How Money, Science,and Politics Drive the Commerce of Conception (2006); and most recently Wonder Women: Sex, Power, and the Quest for Perfection (2013).

President Spar is a graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, and received her doctorate in government from Harvard.She is a member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences and currently serves as a director of Goldman Sachs; a director of Value Retail, LLC; anda trustee of the Markle Foundation. Prior to assuming her presidency at Barnard, Spar spent 17 years teaching at Harvard Business Schoolwhere she was the Spangler Family Professor of Business Administration and the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Research and Development.In 2008, she became the 7th president of Barnard College.

“2015 VIEWS FROM THE BENCH: INSIGHTS & BEST PRACTICES”

This program will draw on the unique insight and perspective of a panel of judges and staff from both the Court of Common Pleas and theWestern District of Pennsylvania. The panel will offer useful tips and advice on navigating the practice of civil litigation in state and federalcourt. Topics will include how attorneys can most effectively advocate their positions, in motions, dispositive pleadings and at trial, as well asthe impact of technology on cases and in the courtroom. The judges also plan to discuss their rules and procedures and will provide anoverview of recent developments in both state and federal courts in Allegheny County. Finally, the judges will field questions from the audience,as well as questions received in advance.

This program will guide Sole and Small Firm Practitioners on getting and keeping clients by providing practical information on the threemost important steps – getting the potential clients in the door, deciding whether and how to take the case and setting up the relationship.The panels will discuss using social media effectively and ethically to get the potential clients in the door, including reviewing the new PBAEthics Opinion on social media use. Once those potential clients are in the door, the lawyer needs to pick which clients to keep, so the panelistswill give practical information on case selection and how to avoid the pitfalls and risks of dabbling. The next step for the lawyer will be to setthat relationship up right from the beginning. The panels will talk about the importance of engagement agreements, referral fees andarrangements, including examining the new Pa. Rules of Professional Conduct regarding record keeping. Attendees will walk away withpractical tips on how to work more efficiently and maintain a good relationship with their clients so they can constantly be excited andenthusiastic about their practices, their existing clients and cases and their next case or client.

The 25th Annual Bench-Bar Sporting Clays event will be held at the Seven Springs Sporting Clays Course, a world class facility.

The events will include sporting clays on the Seven Springs course and optional 5-stand.

Sporting Clays - $65 per round if you bring your own gun and shells; 5-stand - $10.00 per round.

Golf carts are available to use and are included at no cost. Instruction assistance is available for new shooters. Shotguns and ammunition are available at the course at an additional charge if you do not bring your own.

You must register for some portion of the Conference to participate. Registration fee of $65 must be paid to theAllegheny County Bar Association along with your Conference registration.

Additional fees for gun rental, ammunition, and optional 5-stand can be paid at the shooting range on the day of the event. This formshould accompany your Bench-Bar registration form.
