• Memorization – flash cards, copy lists

WHY STUDY FOR A QUIZ/TEST?

Page 2: Why study for a quiz/test?

Key Concepts for Quiz Convection – process of heat rising due

to density changes (candle and smoke!) Conduction – Transfer of energy

molecule to molecule (has to touch) Insolation – the energy (radiation)

received from the Sun (through space) Various forms of radiation distinguished

by wavelength

Page 3: Why study for a quiz/test?

Key Concepts for Quiz Continued Reflect – radiation reflected back out of

the Earth’s atmosphere Absorb – take in radiation (opposite of

reflect) Scattered – radiation which is spread

around in the atmosphere

Page 4: Why study for a quiz/test?

Quiz Review When the Earth

receives radiation from the Sun, not all of it is absorbed.

Some of the energy is reflected and/or scattered.

Page 5: Why study for a quiz/test?

Quiz Review The energy that is

absorbed by Earth is absorbed by various surfaces.

Darker colored surfaces reflect less light but absorb more energy.

Lighter colored surfaces reflect more light but absorb less energy.

Page 6: Why study for a quiz/test?

Quiz Review The gasses that

contribute to the Greenhouse Effect areCarbon Dioxide (CO2)

Methane (CH4)

Nitrous Oxide (N2O)

Water Vapor (H2O)

These contribute to the climate change!

Quiz Review In page 14 of the ESRT

there is a chart of the atmosphere and the different parts of it.

We discussed that the ozone (O3) layer is in the stratosphere.

What is noticeable about the different parts of the atmosphere? Temperature Zones The “pauses” between

them. Altitude

Page 8: Why study for a quiz/test?

Quiz Review Radiation is on

ESRT page 14. Notice two things:

Wavelength of radiation increases from right to left.

PRACTICE QUIZQuestion #1

Page 10: Why study for a quiz/test?

Answer is #1

Think of a blacktop in the summer. It gets hot quicker because it is a dark surface that absorbs energy and reflects less!

Question #1

Question #2

Page 12: Why study for a quiz/test?

Answer is #2

LOOK AT THE SPIKE ON GRAPH – NO OTHER INFORMATION IS NEEDED TO GET ANSWER.

Question #3

Page 14: Why study for a quiz/test?

Answer is #1

Look at picture on ESRT (page 14) and it gives answer!

There is no temperature given off, different source, or differing speeds.

Process of elimination!

Answer is #1

Strictly a vocabulary question.

Terrestrial radiation is infrared.

Specific heat – how easily things heat up.

Convection – process of moving heat due to density differences.

ESRT P.1!! There are two main

gasses within the atmosphere: Nitrogen (78%) Oxygen (21%)

98% of the atmosphere are made of these gasses!

We need these to survive and maintain life on Earth.
