The sergeant’s uniform was perfect. h Standing at the end of a long room, where cream walls held up ceiling tiles with stray water stains, Sgt. Jessica Murphy and her charcoal khaki were set. Her Wicomico County Sheri ’s star beamed under humming uorescent lights, as she waited near the projector. h Murphy was pre- paring a July refresher on de-escalation and in-custody death avoidance, while outside the room, chilling details of George Floyd’s death under the knee of a Min- neapolis police ocer swirled around the country and catalyzed protests across the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. NABB RESEARCH CENTER FOR DELMARVA HISTORY & CULTURE, AND DETROIT FREE PRESS Democrats in the Maryland Senate announced an ambitious $500 million plan Wednesday that aims to provide broad economic relief to the people and businesses that have suered most during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Senate Recovery Now plan would oer millions of dollars to prop up a variety of struggling sectors, in- cluding housing, health care, educa- tion, nonprots and businesses such as restaurants and hotels. The Democrats’ plan would add to Gov. Larry Hogan’s RELIEF Act, a pro- posal that would provide stimulus payments to certain working Mary- landers, eliminate state income tax on unemployment benets and oer tax breaks to some businesses. Senate President Bill Ferguson said Wednesday that the Senate’s Recovery Now plan would be treated as an amendment to the RELIEF Act and would ll in gaps in Hogan’s plan. To- gether, the two plans would cost roughly $1.3 billion. “The Senate will be focusing on CO- VID relief through the eyes of our most vulnerable and impacted Marylanders and small businesses,” Ferguson said. “We know that this crisis has not been felt equally, and equitable recovery is essential.” What the relief plan would do Among the plan’s highlights are one-time grants of $1,000 to people whose unemployment claims are stuck in limbo while caseworkers ad- judicate their cases; $25 million in housing assistance to eliminate hous- ing debt for 5,000 Marylanders; $10 million for food banks and $9 million to help with utility debts. Here’s an overview of what the relief package would provide: h $44 million in unemployment as- sistance, including one-time grants of $1,000 to people whose claims are stuck in adjudication and $3 million for more caseworkers to handle claims h $59 million to vulnerable people, including $22 million in additional benets through the Temporary Dis- ability Assistance Program, $10 mil- lion for food banks, and $9 million to help with utility debt h $28 million in housing assistance, including $25 million to help 5,000 Dems will add $500M to Hogan’s RELIEF Act Senate plan would draw from Rainy Day Fund Madeleine O’Neill Salisbury Daily Times USA TODAY NETWORK – DELMARVA See STIMULUS, Page 2A MD-GCI0538879-03 Right now, at Arctic Heating and Air Conditioning you can get an Arctic Air 16 SEER Heat Pump with matching variable speed Air Handler at Super Low Pricing!
