FEBRUARY 24 IS CHURCH PLANTING SUNDAY FEBRUARY 24 IS CHURCH PLANTING SUNDAY DID YOU KNOW that 3.1 billion people still have not heard the good news of Christ’s death and Resurrection? Some of them are in your own neighborhoods, seeking after a sense of belonging they’ve never known. Jesus’ heart is broken for these people, and church plants are an effective means of reaching them with the gospel. This is why we plant churches: CHURCH PLANTING IS BIBLICAL Jesus’ last commandment to His people was “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). We see in Acts that early Christians accomplished this by planting churches and sending out leaders (Acts 11, 13). CHURCH PLANTING REACHES THE LOST New, healthy churches continue to be the most effective means of reaching un-churched people in America. In addition, new churches reach new generations, residents, and people groups coming to our neighborhoods. DID YOU KNOW that 3.1 billion people still have not heard the good news of Christ’s death and Resurrection? WORTH THE RISKThree and a half years after its launch, New Hope Community Church was thriving at 350 members—until a necessary move caused the church to lose its entire leadership team and half the congregation.

“We were giving our blood for Jesus, and everything just fell apart,” Pastor Eddie DeJesus says. “Then I realized the problem—just a few people were doing everything to build a big church. I decided our focus would be on reducing lostness in our city instead.”

To that end, Eddie started a church-planting internship to commission effective leaders from New Hope. When they started the program, the congregation averaged 180–200. Today, they have 450 members actively engaged in Kingdom work through church planting as well as compassionate ministries like feeding 300 impoverished families weekly.

Through these outreaches, 40–50 new believers have been baptized and discipled annually in the past decade.

“It’s worth every risk to do whatever it takes to reach people for Jesus,” Eddie says. “I guarantee there are lost people in your city. And there are believers in your congregation who want to be equipped for Kingdom work.”
