WHY DO I WANT A MICROGRID FOR MY COMMUNITY, CAMPUS, OR TRANSIT SYSTEM? GPAEE GLOBALCON LuncheonMarch 18, 2015
WHAT IS A MICROGRID?
MICROGRID DEFINITION
• A group of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources
• Clearly defined electrical boundaries and acts as a single controllable entity with respect to the grid
• Connects to and disconnects from the grid and able to operate in both grid-connected or island-mode

MICROGRID PANELISTS
• Community – Caleb Stratton, City of Hoboken
• Transit System– John Geitner, New Jersey Transit
• University Campus– Kurt Bresser, Temple University
• Commercial/Industrial Campus– Rudy Terry, The Navy Yard
NEW JERSEY TRANSIT “TRANSIT GRID”
• New Jersey's public transportation corporation
• The nation's third largest provider of bus, rail and light rail transit
• Provides nearly 223 million passenger trips each year
• Fleet consists of:
– 2,027 buses
– 711 trains
– 45 light rail vehicles
NEW JERSEY TRANSIT “TRANSIT GRID”
To service the critical area, the designed microgrid would consist of the following generation elements:
• ~104MW gas-fired electric power generating plant
• ~ 7MW of distributed generation, including fuel cells and combined heat and power
• ~5MW of solar generation
• New transmission and distribution infrastructure will be constructed; other existing key infrastructure will be hardened
• Electric vehicles will be deployed to maximize energy storage
TEMPLE UNIVERSITY – CAMPUS MICROGRID
• Main Campus
– 7.1 million sq. ft. urban campus
– 118 acres
– 31,500 students
– 4,100 employees
• Master Plan Update in 2014
TEMPLE UNIVERSITY – CAMPUS MICROGRID
• Campus Electricity Demands
– 23 MW Peak Demand
– Over 110 million kWh Annual
• Generation Plant Operations
– Standby power to critical loads on campus
– DR revenue opportunities
– Cost Savings on Peak Load Costs
THE NAVY YARD SMART ENERGY CAMPUS
• 1200 acre office, R&D, industrial, and manufacturing campus
• Over 140 companies and 3 Navy activities
• More than 11,000 employees
• Currently 7 million SF, plans for 6 million additional SF
• $700+ million of private investment
• 28 MW demand growing to 50 MW
THE NAVY YARD SMART ENERGY CAMPUS
Currently in Phase 1 implementation of 10 year Energy Master Plan
• Smart Metering and Smart Substation
• Network Operations Center (NOC)
• 6MW Distributed Generation Plant
• Up to 1MW of PV and Battery Storage
• Developing “islanding” capability
• Awarded Microgrid Controller Grant from DoE with Alstom Grid
