WHAT IS A MICROGRID?

MICROGRID DEFINITION

• A group of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources

• Clearly defined electrical boundaries and acts as a single controllable entity with respect to the grid

• Connects to and disconnects from the grid and able to operate in both grid-connected or island-mode

NEW JERSEY TRANSIT “TRANSIT GRID”

• New Jersey's public transportation corporation

• The nation's third largest provider of bus, rail and light rail transit

• Provides nearly 223 million passenger trips each year

• Fleet consists of:

– 2,027 buses

– 711 trains

– 45 light rail vehicles

NEW JERSEY TRANSIT “TRANSIT GRID”

To service the critical area, the designed microgrid would consist of the following generation elements:

• ~104MW gas-fired electric power generating plant

• ~ 7MW of distributed generation, including fuel cells and combined heat and power

• ~5MW of solar generation

• New transmission and distribution infrastructure will be constructed; other existing key infrastructure will be hardened

• Electric vehicles will be deployed to maximize energy storage
