BBA- A ladder to corporate career

A degree in business education at undergraduate level does not only boost your

management skills and corporate insight, but also brings you opportunities to begin your

career in corporate world immediately after completing the professional programme.

“Prime objective of all BBA Programs is to create managers for tomorrow; managers who

are equipped with knowledge, skills and personality to take relevant business decisions,”

says Prof. (Dr.) SK Dubey, Amity School of Business, FMS -Amity University Uttar Pradesh.

He adds that post BBA degree students get positions at the junior executive or managerial

level in the front line of an organization. “Such programems groom well-rounded managers

with global sensitivity and holistic business perspective,” says Prof. (Dr.) SK Dubey.

During the BBA programme, students undergo multiple summer internship during themonths of May and June every academic year. While the industry training in different

companies bring BBA students varied industry insight, it also gives them an opportunity to

explore their interest areas by pursuing the industry training in similar interest domains.

Such industry trainings also help students widen their professional horizons beyond

classroom teaching and sometimes it also helps them fetch jobs in the organization which

get impressed with their performance during their stint as intern.

BBA Programmes and Course Structures – A glimpse on what is taught and what to learn

BBA, BBM, BBS, BMS, BFIA, IPM are the names of the under graduate management

programmes offered by various universities and institutes in India. While names and

duration may vary, the course content is more or less the same.

The duration of the programmes is mainly 3 years. The University of Delhi has increased the

programme duration by 1 year, i.e. 4 years. Indian Institute of Management, Indore has

introduced a 5 year Integrated Programme in Management. The first 3 years of the

programme would impart the under graduate management education and the next 2 years

would be post graduate management education.

To help you get the crux of the under graduate management programmes offered by the

top institutes, we share with you the table below.

While the duration of the BBA or BMS programmes in all the universities of India is 3 years,

the same for University of Delhi (DU) is 4 years. Till 2012, DU offered programmes in

different nomenclature such as Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS), Bachelor of Business

Economics and Bachelor of Financial Investment and Analysis (BFIA). Since the year 2013, all

these programmes have been consolidated to Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS). The

duration of the programme was also increased to 4 years instead of 3 years since last year.

Speaking about the objective of increasing the duration of the programme by a year, DU

mentions, “In this new Four Year Undergraduate Programme, you will have great flexibility

and wide ranging choice. Though we do not wish or encourage this, in case you wish or have

to leave college after two years, DU shall acknowledge your education and award you a

diploma. You can return to DU in the future to complete your education. Similarly, if you

wish or have to leave after three years, DU shall give you a Bachelor’s degree with a Major

(subject). Needless to say after 4 years you would be awarded a Bachelor Honours/B.Tech

with your Major (subject).”

Integrated Programme in Management

The 5 year Integrated Programme in Management was launched in India by IIM Indore in

the year 2011. Dr. N Ravichandran, former Director, IIM Indore said, “The Five Year

Integrated Programme is meant for students who have finished their Higher Secondary

Education (HSE) or equivalent. This is an innovative programme being offered by IIM Indore

to identify and amplify the leadership potential of young men and women in India and

prepare them to shoulder challenging managerial and administrative responsibilities in

Indian and global societal context.”

According to IIM Indore, 40% of the programme would focus on the following areas:

Mathematics, Statistics, Logic and Computer Science

Ethics, Corporate Governance, Corporate Social Responsibility, Business Strategy,

International Business and Entrepreneurship.

 After BBA:

The undergraduate management programmes offer you an opportunity to start your

corporate career at a tender age.

While campus placement is not very common for most of the BBA programmes except a few

top institutions, a BBA or equivalent degree can fetch you an entry level job in various

management roles. A BBA degree can fetch you a monthly package of 15-20 thousand or

even more depending on your level of competence and depth of knowledge and

understanding.

You can also pursue higher studies after your BBA which will make your MBA degree morevaluable. A post-BBA work-experience of 1-2 year helps understand application of

management theories that your learn during MBA.

The BBA programs are also an industry-fit as companies look for BBA graduates for their

mass managerial openings at entry-level jobs. An MBA, for them is overkill for the job they

offer. The positions which BBA graduates fit into includes Cost estimator, Loss prevention

manager, Sale manager, Security officer and Operation manager, supply chain managers etc.

Job opportunities galore:

After specializing in different domains like Bachelor of Business Administration BBA

(General), BBA (Marketing & Sales), BBA (Finance & Accounts),  BBA (Family Business

Management), BBA+ MBA (Dual Degree), the BBA graduates get various entry level and

front end job options.

While the economic slowdown has toughened job market for MBA’s which are generally

hired at senior level, the entry level job opportunities have remained mostly unaffected.

BBA’s become the best fit for the positions where corporate feel that hiring an MBA is an

overkill.

The different entry level job profiles post BBA include that of Sales Manager, Advertising

Manager, Brand Manager, Communications Manager, Department Manager, Warehouse

Manager, Product Manager, PR Executive, Retail Buyer and Merchandiser, Store Manager

among others.

The annual average salary package for the BBA’s varies in the range of Rs 2.00 lakh to Rs 6

lakh depending on the institutions and capabilities of students.

Placements of different BBA colleges:

Many top colleges also attract big corporate for placements and also bring attractive ROI

(Return on Investment) for BBA’s. While top colleges offer campus placement services,

many other BBA colleges assist their students to find jobs off-campus.

For example, Anil Surendra Modi School of Commerce (NMIMS), in its placement report

2013, said the average annual salary for its class of BBA was Rs 3.5 lakh. The list of recruiters

at the institute included top companies like PWC, Deutsche Bank Global Operations, UBS

Verity Knowledge Solutions, Protiviti among others.

Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies (SSCBS), one of the top BBA colleges under

Delhi University, in its placement report of 2012 stated that it received 121 offers for its 171

students from 32 companies. It also reported an average package of 6 lakh Per annum with

companies from across 15 different sectors offering a diverse mix of profiles that includedstrategic consulting associate, business analyst, equity and other research oriented

positions.

Some key recruiters included KPMG, The Smart Cube, Bain & Co. and The Meltwater Group.

Similarly, key recruiters for Symbiosis Centre for Management Studies in 2012 included

PriceWaterHouse Coopers, Ernst and Young, Tresvista, HDFC, Convonix, Eaton Industries,

Maersk, HSBC, Catenon, Balaji Telefilms, iResearch, KPMG, Zomato among others.

Many other BBA colleges also have placement cells which coordinate annual placementactivities.

Opportunity to pursue higher studies:

A BBA degree also eases avenues for higher studies in management education. Apart from

enabling a candidate to engage in a job, management insights during BBA programme also

helps students to add value to their MBA programme that they may pursue in future.

Why BBA is a winning proposition

After your 10+2 exams, your immediate focus shifts to choosing a professional course that

may help realize your dream career. While career options in engineering, medicine,

commerce and science generally dominate students’ choice after their higher secondary

education, management programmes such as BBA, BMS, and BBS at undergraduate level

also present lucrative career options in the world of business and corporate management.

Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and related programmes at UG level offer a

comprehensive understanding of business environment and management functions. These

courses also helps student to learn leadership qualities and develops their problem solving

abilities which are much required in today’s competitive and complex business

environment.

Careers360 brings you strong reasons why you should choose BBA programmes after your

12th

.

Offering early opportunity for acquiring Professional skills:

BBA programmes help you acquire management skills at very early stage. Just after your

12th

course, it brings you closer to the world of management and helps you grasp knowledge

of making business decision like a leader. If you wish to become an entrepreneur, it alsohelps you think more precisely on different aspects of running a business. It helps you build

tactical skills and develop strategic thinking.

3-year programme gives more academic years to learn basic management

The undergraduate management programmes gives you a minimum of three years to learn

basic management theories comprehensively. The topics covered during the programme

range from business economics, accounting principles, finance and marketing management,

to business law, and computer fundamentals, etc. These courses under a BBA programme

help develop a holistic approach towards management.

An industry fit programme for mass managerial position

The BBA programs are also an industry-fit as companies look for BBA graduates for their

mass managerial openings at entry-level jobs. An MBA, for them is overkill for the job they

offer. The positions which BBA graduates fit into includes Cost estimator, Loss prevention

manager, Sale manager, Security officer and Operation manager, supply chain managers etc.

Makes one financially independent with a lesser investment compared to other MBA:

If you wish to pursue your career in management, the BBA programmes offer you an

opportunity to enter the working environment early in your age, hence making you

financially independent also. Further pursuing an MBA after your graduation in any other

stream makes it more expensive proposition than your BBA programs.

Also, the return on investment (ROI) also counts in favour of BBA. While MBAs spend five

years after their class 12 exams, it takes only three year for BBAs to enter the job market.

Page 12: Why BBA-

Develops a management focused approach from the very beginning:

The BBA programme helps you develop management focused approach from the very

beginning of you career. Thus you don’t need to unlearn many things which otherwise you

do while pursuing MBA after your graduation from other streams. As a fresher, yourcapability to learn is also better as you catch everything very quickly.

Early work-ex brings in-depth insight into application of theories during higher studies:

As BBA programmes helps you enter the corporate world at a tender age, your dream of

pursuing higher studies can be more beneficial as you can enter an MBA programme with a

good industry experience and insight in management domain. Your management insight

while working post-BBA develops depth on application of management theories that your

learn during MBA.

Why you may still shun your BBA opportunity?

Despite so many advantages of doing a BBA, you may still shun this opportunity if you are

not determined on your career path. If you are not yet sure on management becoming your

definitive career choice after your graduation, you need to give a second thought to your

BBA plan.

Also, despite choosing other streams at UG level, your dream for corporate role and

managerial position may come true as you can enter the domain by pursuing an MBAdegree after your graduation from any other stream.

While most of the BBA students look forward to pursue an MBA degree either immediately

after their BBA or after a one-two year work experience, the cost of their management

education during BBA increased their financial burden and makes their Return on

Investment (ROI) a bigger challenge. Also, many institutes including IIM-Indore have begun

5-year integrated programme in management covering BBA part also, which makes a

separate BBA degree redundant.

Still, an undergraduate programme in management like BBA enhances your businessmanagement skills and brightens your chance for an early foray into corporate world.
