It is among the top 10 preferred entrepreneurial locations in the

world. Bangalore is home to many well-recognized colleges and research

institutions in India. Numerous public sector heavy industries,

technology companies, aerospace, telecommunications, and defense

organizations are located in the city. Bangalore is known as the “Silicon

Valley of India” because of its position as the nations leading IT

exporter. A demographically diverse city, Bangalore is a major

economic and cultural hub and the second fastest growing major

metropolis in India.

Bangalore, also

rendered Bengaluru, is the

capital of the

Indian state of Karnataka.

Located on the Deccan

Plateau in the south-eastern

part of Karnataka. Bangalore is

India's third most populous

city and fifth-most populous

urban agglomeration.

Bangalore is well known as a

hub for India's information

technology sector.

Bangalore, the capital of the State of Karnataka, is one of India‟s

most charming cities. Today, it is India‟s 5th largest city and the

momentum of its industrial and commercial growth is unequalled

in the country. Aptly named “Garden City”, it boasts of an amazing

number of flowering trees and parks. With splendid pink cassias

and golden acacia’s blooming, with jacarandas flowering in

purple majesty, and gulmohur’s lighting the roads with their

brilliant orange flame- the city is a delight to simply wander

around in.

The city of Bangalore has quite an interesting history attached to

it. Right from its name to its becoming the IT Capital of India,

each stage in the history of Bangalore is worth mentioning. Read

on to know more about the history of “Bengalooru”, India.

Naming of Bangalore

There are numerous versions related to the naming of the city as

'Bangalore'. As per the information available in the Gazetteer of

India, the term 'Bangalore' is an anglicized version of

"Bengalooru," a Kannad term. The word Bengalooru was in turn

derived from the phrase 'bende kaalu ooru', meaning 'the town

of boiled beans'. There is story behind naming the city as the

'town of boiled beans'.

It is said that King Ballala of the Hoysala dynasty once got lost

in the jungle and was very tired and hungry. In the jungle, he

came across a poor and old woman, who offered him some boiled

beans. As an expression of his gratitude towards the woman, the

King named the place as 'bende kaalu ooru'. However, there are

other historical evidences that reveal that the name 'Bengalooru'

was recorded much before the reign of King Ballala.

The Time of Kempe Gowda

Kempe Gowda, known as the founder of Bangalore, played a very

important in the shaping of the city. A feudal lord himself, he used

to serve under the Vijayanagara Kings. A hunting enthusiast,

Kempe Gowda once saw his dog being chased by a hare. Amused

as well as impressed up this incident, he started calling Bangalore

as 'Gandu bhoomi' (heroic place). He, with the help of King

Achutaraya, built a mud fort in Bangalore and inside it founded

the towns of Balepet, Cottonpet, and Chickpet. Later, his son got

the four watchtowers erected on the boundaries of the city, visible

even today.

Reign of the Sultans, Marathas and British

In the year 1638, the Vijayanagara Empire fell to the Sultan of Bijapur, Mohammed Adil Shah. For the

next sixty years, the city was under the rule of the Sultans. Thereafter, Mughals took over the city.

However, their rule did not last too long and in 1687, they sold the kingdom to King Chikkadevaraja

Wodeyar of Mysore. He got another fort built in Bangalore, to the south of the one built by Kempe

Gowda. Hyder Ali received Bangalore in the form of jagir in 1759, from Krishna Raja Wodeyar II. He

converted the city into an army town.

In the year 1799, when Tipu Sultan died, the British returned the kingdom back to Krishna Raja

Wodeyar III. However, the British again took over the kingdom in 1831, citing misrule by Krishna

raja Wodeyar III as the reason. It was under the British rule that Bangalore started developing into a

modern city, with all the contemporary facilities like railways, telegraphs, post and telegraph, etc. The

city was again given back to the Wodeyars in 1881. However, since the British Commissioners were

based in Bangalore, its development into a contemporary city continued unabated.

Post-Independence

After India gained independence in the year 1947, Bangalore became the capital of Karnataka. From

then onwards, the city has witnessed large-scale development and has grown in leaps and bounds.

IT Capital of India

The introduction of information technology in Bangalore, somewhere around the year 2000, led to the

development of the city as the IT Capital of India. Today, it has become the hub of IT professionals in

India. There are numerous other names given to Bangalore, like 'India's Silicon Valley', 'The Fashion

Capital of India', 'The Pub City of India', etc.

Re-naming as Bengalooru

The city of Bangalore got renamed as Bengalooru in the year 2006. Even though the term

'Bangalore' is still very common, now the official name of the city is Bengalooru.

CLIMATE Bangalore’s climatic conditions are considered to be the best in India. With the weather

being not hot- not cold, it makes a perfect tourist destination.

Bangalore experiences a tropical savanna climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. Due

to its high elevation, Bangalore usually enjoys a more moderate climate throughout the

year. The coolest month is December with an average low temperature of 15.4 °C and the

hottest month is April with an average high temperature of 32.8 °C. Bangalore receives

rainfall from both the northeast and the southwest monsoons and the wettest months are

September, October, August, July and June, in that order.

According to “The Lonely

Planet”, which is rated as the

Worlds best Travel Magazine,

Bangalore is the 3rd BEST

CITY to visit in the World. No

other Indian city is even

included in the top 10.

This shows that Bangalore is the

best place to be in India. It is a

blend of splendid natural

beauty, booming

technological advancements

and a deep heritage which

dates back centuries.

According to THE LONELY PLANET:

“The undisputed Elvis of South Asian megacities, Bengaluru is in a

class of its own when it comes to redefining flamboyance. Perpetually

drunk on the good life, this South Indian metropolis packs in the

best brews, the scummiest cuisines, and the liveliest arts and music

scene, not to mention the hippest population you could hang out

with. This year, evenings in the „capital of cool‟ are poised to get even

more intoxicating. And if the maddening traffic has always been your

concern, take heart: Bengaluru new high-speed Metro network now

ensures that your favorite watering hole is easier to reach than ever.

There‟s only one thing you could say to that: „Chill maadi!‟ “

“Be a part of the many more to come…”

The Global Village creates space for internationals to come together, where all the participating

countries and delegates share their specialties and cuisines, stories, experiences and lot more.

This amazing AIESEC tradition connects participants across cultures and shows a sparkle of global

unity and openness in a comfortable and diverse atmosphere. The Colorful "cultural exhibition"

will be open to public and aims to promote international experiences among students.

Global Village, a trademark of AIESEC International, is an event for everyone being held in

Bangalore for the 7th time.

This event will used the network of AIESEC to benefit the youth of

Bangalore. Enterprising young students from the city interacted and

networked with working professionals from difference stages of careers.

Corporate companies gained access to a congregation of youth from a wide

variety of educational backgrounds. The event included workshops,

discussion forums conducted by a team of speakers who are experts in

their respective fields. This enhanced the knowledge of the delegates

present and evoked a lot of innovative thoughts and ideas in various

topics. It is the link between our alumni, foreign interns, students from

various colleges and our organization.

AIESEC Bangalore and SCEAD Foundation India presented to

Bangalore, Earth Day 2013!

This Earth Day, we all joined hands to celebrate and protect our

wonderful planet. Carrying the theme of 'Reduce Reuse Recycle',

this event promised to be an eye opener, and also a real treat! Took the pledge to 'do your bit' and rock to the music of Montry Manuel

from Thaalavattam!

Through this Go Global program AIESEC provides young students

an opportunity to develop entrepreneurial and leadership skills

through international internships centered on social issues. The

objective is to target our country’s youth – the global

entrepreneurs of tomorrow – and help them enrich their

education by offering them with a holistic international

experience. An Experience that challenges their world view and

helps them gain a unique combination of multi-cultural, social

and entrepreneurial exposure during the formative years of their

lives.
