Education Plus Health is the leading nonprofit in the region advocating for school-based health centers as a primary source of healthcare for underserved students. In conjunction with afterschool programming and post-secondary education, Education Plus Health is working to create new opportunities for students at every life stage by increasing academic performance and access to high quality healthcare.

The organization is committed to improving access to high quality healthcare and driving better educational outcomes for underserved communities. As the emerging affiliate for the national School-Based Health Alliance, Education Plus Health is the voice for school-based health care in the state working to advance policies in Pennsylvania that enable the growth of school-based health centers across the state.

of asthmatic students were chronically absent across all schools last year missing 18 or more days from school, down from 30% in the previous year despite an 11% increase in asthmatic students overall (n=742).

27% Nationally the average is 15%; chronic absenteeism is one of the leading predictors of academic performance.

34% saw a decrease in symptoms of mental health distress on the PSC (Pediatric Symptom Checklist) following brief treatment therapy in the School Based Health Center.

Students that participated between 16 and 30 days last year in the Building 21 high school after school program showed a 7% increase in school attendance, compared to 4% for students attending 1-15 days and 1% for students that did not participate.

87% of students with an asthma coach saw an increase in knowledge from the pre to post test.

87% of students saw an increase in ACT score (Asthma Control Test) pre to post intervention.

Hospital visits due to asthma continued to decline from 1.83 mean days in 2016, to 1.59 mean days in 2017, and 1.33 in 2018. *Keystone First members only.

441 asthmatic students assessed for their level of control – 28% uncontrolled via ACT score

4,041 screened for healthy weight – 23% screened obese

Asthma Coaching in the SBHC: The School Based Health Center model expanded with the addition of an Asthma Coach – Community Health Worker to work more deeply with uncontrolled asthmatic students. 97% improved their ACT score. 87% improved their knowledge about asthma and asthma ACT score of symptoms.

Founding Offi ce Closes: After 36 years Education Plus Health founder Mary Schuler closed the Idaho offi ce in 2018. We thank her for her vision and pioneering contributions to the fi eld of special education.

Urban Farming & Nutrition: The La Salle Academy School Based Health Center partnered with the Comcast Innovation Studio at Oxford Mills over the summer to expose students to innovative and sustainable technology-based horticultural techniques. In 2019 Education Plus Health and Comcast will expand this pilot into two new schools for a more comprehensive student-led environmental education and agriculture project that will culminate in the spring with a farm-to-table dinner for students and parents in the school yard.

21st Century Photo Club:Education Plus Health showcased by silent auction the photography of the Building 21 High School 21st Century Program students at the back-to-school event held at Oxford Mills.

334 students participated in the Education Plus Health 21st Century after school program at Building 21 High School last school year.

4,401 students served in grades K-12 through the School Based Health Centers

61 new freshman joined the 21st Century program this year beginning with the freshman orientation at the Outward Bound ropes course.

1,880 reached through classroom health education

New School Based Health Centers:Education Plus Health launched two new School Based Health Centers in 2018 partnering with the new Deep Roots Charter School in the Frankford section of Philadelphia, and I-Lead Charter High School in Reading, Pennsylvania.
