It has been able to make a valuable and disncve contribuon through a wide variety of awards. The Foundaon is happy to consider applicaons from staff and students of the University. Small grants, normally in a range between £500 and £5000, are made on a one-off, non-recurrent basis to projects where the Trustees consider their intervenon will make a significant difference between success and failure, and where there are no other obvious routes to obtain significant support. See list of previous award winners to get a flavour of the type of projects that have been supported already. Unfortunately the Trustees are not able to consider applicaons for PhD study or applicaons which are of a standard research grant format, the laer should be directed to the relevant research council. Criteria The criteria used in selecng projects for support are, that they: should be of modest size should be the type of acvity in which Dame Catherine Cookson herself might have had an interest should have no obvious alternave source of support, or be the sort of project where support from the Foundaon could be pump-priming for other financial help should have local interest should be of benefit to students It is a condion of any grant that a final report on the project is submied to the Trustees. Who should apply?

The Catherine Cookson Foundation was set up by the generosity of the late Dame Catherine Cookson to support academic initiatives within the University. It has been able to make a valuable and distinctive contribution through a wide variety of awards. The Foundation is happy to consider applications from staff and students of the University.

Small grants, normally in a range between £500 and £5000, are made on a one-off, non-recurrent basis to projects where the Trustees consider their intervention will make a significant difference between success and failure, and where there are no other obvious routes to obtain significant support. See list of previous award winners to get a flavour of the type of projects that have been supported already. Unfortunately the Trustees are not able to consider applications for PhD study or applications which are of a standard research grant format, the latter should be directed to the relevant research council.

Criteria

The criteria used in selecting projects for support are, that they:

should be of modest size

should be the type of activity in which Dame Catherine Cookson herself might have had an interest

should have no obvious alternative source of support, or be the sort of project where support from the Foundation could be pump-priming for other financial help

should have local interest

should be of benefit to students It is a condition of any grant that a final report on the project is submitted to the Trustees. This should take the form of an A4 document, two pages in length, listing original objectives and saying to what extent they have been met together with a statement of how much was received from the Foundation and how it was spent. If a final report is not forthcoming within a reasonable time, the Trustees reserve the right to request the return of the funds.

The annual call for applications is now underway with a closing date of 5 pm on Friday 21 June 2019. An application form is available here and should be made in the form of a single pdf document (combining application form, supporting statement and cv if appropriate) and submitted to [email protected].

Newcastle Poetry Festival 2017

The success of the 2017 Newcastle Poetry Festival, 9th May – 13th May, exceeded all expectations. Audience figures soared by an incredible 30% for every performance. The expanded programme of workshops was fully subscribed. Perhaps most gratifying however, was the response from both audience members and performers alike which has been truly overwhelming.

MiLAN Collective Film Festival 2017

Running for a third time from 13th-17th February 2017, the MiLAN Film Festival was based on the theme of ‘LOVE’. For the first time ever the Festival was opened to the public as well as being promoted to staff and students throughout the University. Starting with a short panel discussion covering medical and health themes as well as arts and humanities elements, each evening a film was screened followed by a longer post-film Q&A with the audience and panel members. The central focus of the 2017 Festival was to explore health-based narratives through film and expert panel discussion whilst engaging a new and wider audience. The overwhelming success of the 2017 MiLAN Film Festival would not have been possible without the support of the Catherine Cookson Foundation.

Go Volunteer Student-Led Project Fund

- Jingle Books: a book donation scheme, benefiting local care homes and children’s hospitals

- BeeSoc: Training students in beekeeping

- INTO(gration): linking INTO students with English-speaking classes

- Summer Music Festival Outreach - Gab on the Go: Language Learning Platform - Success4All—coding club - Success4All—Design a Mascot Competition - Easy Veg: exploring a veg box scheme on campus
