Finding out what we should really know about Christ?
God is Sovereign! What exactly does that mean?
Noah Webster's New International Dictionary of the English Language
1. (a.) Supreme or highest in power; superior to all others; chief; as, our sovereign prince.
2. (a.) Independent of, and unlimited by, any other; possessing, or entitled to, original
authority or jurisdiction; as, a sovereign state; a sovereign discretion.
3. (a.) Princely; royal.
4. (a.) Predominant; greatest; utmost; paramount.
5. (a.) Efficacious in the highest degree; effectual; controlling; as, a sovereign remedy.
6. (n.) The person, body, or state in which independent and supreme authority is vested;
especially, in a monarchy, a king, queen, or emperor.
Knowing who God is as important as knowing your own name. What would it be like
if you were nameless? How would people call you? Hey, nameless one, come over here. Thankfully that is not the case for us or our God. In fact God created the
whole name thing! So, what exactly is in a name? A person’s name represents
essential information. Often times, it communicates indispensible ideas for distinguishing a person’s character and personality. If that is the case then the
names of God are essential for us to know who He truly is. I love this poem sharing about God’s names and about His character.
My King
By L.M. Lockridge
The Bible says my King is the King of the Jews. He’s the King of Israel. He’s the King of Righteousness. He’s the King of the Ages. He’s the King of Heaven. He’s the King of Glory. He’s the King of kings, and He’s the Lord of lords. That’s my King.
I wonder, do you know Him?
My King is a sovereign King. No means of measure can define His limitless love.
He’s the greatest phenomenon that has ever crossed the horizon of this world. He’s God’s Son. He’s the sinner’s Savior. He’s the centerpiece of civilization. He’s
unparalleled. He’s unprecedented. He is the loftiest idea in literature. He’s the highest personality in philosophy. He’s the fundamental doctrine of true theology. He’s the only one qualified to be an all sufficient Savior.
I wonder if you know Him today?
He supplies strength for the weak. He’s available for the tempted and the tried. He
sympathizes and He saves. He strengthens and sustains. He guards and He guides. He heals the sick. He cleansed the lepers. He forgives sinners. He discharges debtors. He delivers the captive. He defends the feeble. He blesses the young. He
serves the unfortunate. He regards the aged. He rewards the diligent. And He beautifies the meek.
I wonder if you know Him?
He’s the key to knowledge. He’s the wellspring of wisdom. He’s the doorway of deliverance. He’s the pathway of peace. He’s the roadway of righteousness. He’s
the highway of holiness. He’s the gateway of glory.
Do you know Him? Well…
His life is matchless. His goodness is limitless. His mercy is everlasting. His love never changes. His Word is enough. His grace is sufficient. His reign is righteous. And His yoke is easy. And His burden is light.
I wish I could describe Him to you. Yes…
He’s indescribable! He’s incomprehensible. He’s invincible. He’s irresistible. You
can’t get Him out of your mind. You can’t get Him off of your hand. You can’t outlive Him, and you can’t live without Him. Well, the Pharisees couldn’t stand Him,
but they found out they couldn’t stop Him. Pilate couldn’t find any fault in Him. Herod couldn’t kill Him. Death couldn’t handle Him, and the grave couldn’t hold Him.
Yeah! That’s my King, that’s my King.
Homework
What part of this poem touches your heart?
What is your understanding of who God is?
What is your favorite name for God?
What is your favorite scripture regarding God’s character?
What’s in a name?
In the Old Testament, the names of individuals are meaningful; for example, Adam
is named after the "earth" (Adam) from which he was created. (Genesis 2)
A change of name indicates a change of status. For example, the patriarch Abram and his wife Sarai are renamed "Abraham" and "Sarah" when they are told they will
be the father and mother of many nations (Genesis 17:4, 17:15). Simon was renamed Peter when he was given the Keys of Heaven. (Gospel of Matthew 16).
Throughout the Bible, characters are given names at birth that reflect something of significance or describe the course of their lives. For example: Solomon meant peace, and the king with that name was the first whose reign was without warfare.
Likewise, Joseph named his firstborn son Manasseh (Hebrew: "causing to forget") as a gesture of forgiveness to his brothers for selling him into slavery. (Taken from
Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names)
Can you think of other individuals whose names were changed by God to reflect their character?
Read about God’s names in the following scriptures:
Yahweh (Jehovah) LORD - I am I am, I am eternal, self-existent
