Music on Main
I would like to say it gets better every week but really, it is just awesome every week. Market on Main happens every Friday in front of the Radium Visitors Centre from 4 to 9 pm. There are lots of great vendors and it is a busy place. “Like its own little city”. Music on Main brings fantastic bands to the stage from 7 to 9 pm. This Friday, Au-gust 2, ‘The Pickups’ will be performing. They are very pleasant to the ears. And out there for everyone to enjoy. Please consider a two dollar donation to help keep this awesome event rolling.

I am on an amazing roller coaster ride with my life. One day I am sitting on a barge on the lake having a sunny barbecue and the next day I am attached to a machine that removes my blood from my heart chamber, cleans it and pumps it back into me. Up days and down days. Am I the only one? I think not. You may not be attaching yourself to a machine but you might be chained to a job you don’t really like or many other things bringing you down. Your kids are little jerks some-times, your spouse has become your op-ponent as much as your partner, your home/car needs work… There are a lot of things that can bring us down into depression. It is quite the jour-ney and no one is immune. In my feeble mind I like to think I have earned my de-pression with my life situation but I realize everyone has a lot going on. What to do about it? I am going to see a counselor but in the meantime I have a couple friends dragging me out for fun stuff (despite my resistance) and helping me focus on the good side of life.
Sunny Sunday
It was a beautiful Sunday morning when the Pastor announced, “I have 3 sermons today. A $100 sermon that lasts five minutes, a $50 sermon that lasts 30 minutes and a $10 sermon that lasts the full hour. Now let’s take the collection and see which one I shall deliver.”
Culture Tour
The Columbia Basin Culture Tour is com-ing up next weekend, August 10 and 11. It is a free self-guided tour of artistic venues within the Columbia Basin. Visit studios, galleries, museums and herit-age sites for free. Meet the artists, view demonstrations, check out special exhibits and chat with local historians during your tour. It is a great adventure in the Basin. Check out the ad on page 2 or go to their website at www.cbculturetour.com.

Watson’s Waddle
So here we are with another Monday. I sleep in after a busy weekend of hounding. Rob gets up early to sit at his computer all day writing this paper. I finally roll out of bed after a good 11 or 12 hours of down time and move into the living room where Rob is working. I feel like a nap already. Rob gets this feel-ing of guilt when he sees me so we are off for a hurried walk. I sniff things and drag my butt while he urges me to hurry up. It is classic. Back to bed for me, back to work for Rob. I am waiting for my personal savior, Jen of Kootenay Kritters. I know she will take me away to paradise. Walks, swims, playing with other dogs, treats and lots of love. She takes me with Snowpatch, Gunner, Baloo, or any of the other awesome dogs that she walks. It is a lot of fun for me. And here she is now. I better run out bark-ing and tail-wagging so Rob knows she is here and she knows I am happy to see her. My day has just gone from boring to very exciting. Where will we go today? I know it will be fun. It is important to have something to look forward to and it is great to make sure you get out and do some fun stuff every day.
What Year was it?
Hong Kong opened the World’s largest airport and Japan opened the longest sus-pension bridge (1.2 km long). European Nations agreed to a single currency, the Euro, Bill Clinton was impeached for ob-struction of justice relating to Monica Lew-insky and Quebec attempted separation. France won the World Cup on home soil, Viagra was approved for public sales and Russia and the U.S. sent the first compo-nents of the International Space into orbit. What year was it? See page 9.
What Did I Miss?
Every week as I send the paper off to be proofread I really try to remember every-thing I actually wanted to write about. I have so many brilliant thoughts through the week but totally forget them by writing day. There was a time when I was forward-thinking enough to write things down through the week. Oh well, sorry about that. Have a great week.

So we all know that my kidneys failed acutely (suddenly) almost two years ago now. Once kidneys have dropped below 20% function, you are in trouble. Mine are at about 5%. They allow me to pee, but it is mostly just water. I use hemodialysis to clear the toxins from my blood. You use your kidneys to remove toxins and control fluid levels. I am very blessed as many folks in kidney failure do not urinate anymore. They have to control how much fluid they consume as it all builds in their bodies and dialysis helps clear that. It can cause very painful cramps. I am also very blessed to be able to do hemodialysis at home. I am one of only 4 people in the Kootenays who has success-fully transitioned to home hemo. Anyways, this is just a reminder that there are a lot of folks out there whose lives could be changed with the gift of a kidney. I cannot even imagine the feeling of receiv-ing a new lifestyle. And most of you do have an extra kidney that you can easily live without. God has offered you a chance to be an ultimate giver. Think about it.
Night Owls
My 3 year-old daughter was asking ques-tions about wildlife. I was telling her that owls are nocturnal. She said, “Even I know that owls are not turtles.”
Better at Home
A great way for seniors to stay happier and busier is to take up gardening. It is good for our minds as it involves planning, ongo-ing care and beautiful results. Just being in touch with the Earth is also soothing. Take care of yourself and you will be able to live better at home.

My Dream
So I am going to keep writing about this so that you can figure out how you can con-tribute. Dialysis really limits my mobility. I cannot easily travel anywhere without scheduling visits into hospitals every sec-ond day. I would like to change that for a lot of patients. Imagine a mobile dialysis unit with a few machines on it. It could serve 3 distinct purposes, all of them helping a group of folks. Many patients have to travel a long ways every second day to a dialysis centre. This bus could travel to small communities and give them a reprieve from the driving. Be-lieve me, that matters. Most dialysis patients never get out camp-ing. We have to get back to a hospital too often, The bus could park in a campground and serve several patients. We just let them know where we will be. And many patients can never take a trip. The bus could take a few patients on tours for a few days. So what do we need? We need someone to offer up a large vehicle like a bus or motor home. We need 3 or 4 dialysis ma-chines and accessories. A driver. A nurse. Contractors to rebuild the inside of the bus. An amazing generator. And a bunch more stuff. Start brainstorming folks. Let’s change some lives (mine included).
Literacy
I’ve been learning and practicing speed reading. I can read ‘War and Peace’ in under thirty seconds. It’s only three words but it is a start.
Miracle Treat Day
It is still a week away but it is an important day in the valley. On Thursday, August 8, Dairy Queen donates all money earned on Blizzards to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary. The hospital in Calgary is the closest chil-dren’s hospital to the valley and has been used by countless families in our area. It has made some huge differences here. So start planning your Blizzard run from work that day. Take orders from your coworkers and slip away to pick them up. Or if it is a day off, just stop in with family or friends and treat them. I should note that the Turtle Blizzard is pretty tasty.

My Progress
Definitely I am feeling better than I have felt physically in the last couple of years. My body has stabilized from my kidney failure/cancer adventures. Dialysis is doing its job. Unfortunately I do still have elevated levels of creatinine, a muscle byproduct. That takes away some of my strength and en-durance. I will start up a hill feeling strong but my legs will begin to reject the climbing plan quickly. I can lift things but not carry them very far. It has taken a lot of planning and adjust-ments to get things done. It kind of limits some of my activities but not all of them. Doing home dialysis has become pretty easy and methodical. It is about 135 little steps, each one important in its own way. When I make a mistake it often involves things getting wet with saline. It is a quick teacher. Mentally is a bit tougher. Knowing it is keeping me alive is very helpful but sitting there stuck on the machine and thinking I am missing out on things brings me down quickly. It is all about perception. Anyways, things seem to get a bit better every day if I let them.

For easy access to explore the Columbia River Wetlands, drive North from Radium about 25 minutes on Hwy 95. Take a left hand turn onto Brisco Road and after crossing the railroad tracks stay to your right. As you drive (or walk) along the next 2km on this unpaved road you might be fortunate to see a Great Blue Heron, Osprey, Kingfishers, Redwinged Blackbirds or a pair of Loons float-ing on the wetlands. You are seeing a small part of this 180 km ecosystem that runs from Canal Flats to Don-ald, BC. Visit the northern part of the Columbia Valley. It is very naturally beautiful.

The Thrifty Reporter
Fore!!! Since I am not a golfer, I had to look up the meaning… I don’t count golfing once a year as a qualifier to be called a golfer. Fore literally means “look out ahead” and after an errant shot it is used to warn other golfers that a ball might be heading their way or in my case heading for the woods, water or tall grass and never to be found. I might not be a golfer but I sure do love the walk around the golf course and take in the awesome scenery. I would highly recommend this activity to anyone and if you need more golf balls, golf clothes, golf shoes or a set of clubs they can be found at the Invermere Thrift Store at a very reasonable price. The Root
They say that the love of money is the root of all evil and it is hard to disagree. It is certainly the root of a lot of stress for a lot of people. It is wonderful that my truck insurance is expiring. I get to give another $1,300 into a very corrupt system. Oh and my boat trail-er insurance is also due. So if I want to get out for a day of fishing, yes the cost is only $1,400. What a won-derfully corrupt and immoral world in which we live in.
It Was That Year
(From page 4) In 1998, Google was found-ed, ‘The Titanic’ won best picture, an ice storm hit Quebec and the Olympic Winter Games were held in Nagano, Japan.
Safe Scootin’
So I have been itching to get on one of the Segways that are used for the Scootin; Kootenay tours. And I got to scratch that itch at Valley Appreciation Day. They had a demo booth set up so I tried it. It was pretty amazing. With a minute of coaching I was up and rolling. I didn’t do anything very radical but I could tell it was very doable. I will soon be trying one of the tours in Ra-dium. It looks like fun. Give them a call at 250-341-8588.

Change of Pace
I have a couple fairly recent friends who have really stepped up to help me with my feeling sorry for myself. They were by yes-terday evening and we played some cro-quet. You know, that old game with wickets, posts, balls and mallets that you set up on the lawn. We had a lot of fun. It was nice to be out in the sunshine having a little fun competition (I was pretty bad). Find your fun folks.

Firewood Tune-up
Well, we are halfway through the summer and that usually gets folks thinking about gathering firewood. I know I used a lot last year and I have been gathering constantly so I am set up pretty good for this year. Are you? An important part of firewood gathering is a good chainsaw that runs smoothly. If your saw needs a tune-up, stop in to see Lee’s Small Engine Repair Shop across from OK Tire in the Industrial Park. Lee is great for chain saws and budgets. Call 250-341-2551
Where I Was
The photo on page 6 is from a secret mountain location where there may be a few huckleberries. Not many though, as 2 hours and 2 people came up with only a margarine container full.
Long Weekend
Another holiday comes along this week-end. The August long weekend is a big one around the valley as there are always so many folks around visiting our beautiful area. Expect things to be busy so you just have to relax and let it happen. Enjoy yourself and help others enjoy themselves. Be a good representative of our valley. Always take advantage of this wonderful place that we live and don’t be afraid to share it with others. Don’t expect anyone to be perfect, just let them do their thing.
Real Estate
Did you hear about the guy who just bought a two-story home? The agent told him one story before the purchase and another after.
Perseids Meteor Shower
Look to the sky the nights of August 12 and 13. It Is Perseids time. The Perseids is the busiest and brightest of all the meteor showers with the possibility of up to 200 ‘shooting stars’ per minute. This year the moon will be a little crescent that sets ear-ly, making the viewing spectacular. The meteors are awesome to watch every year with some bright balls of flame cross-ing the sky. The shower is happening now but is supposed to peak next weekend. Look up any evening and you will always see some beautiful things. The Perseids are actually out there now but they peak on August 12.

I’ve heard it said that it can be hard to make friends, even in our friendly valley. If you’re looking for some new people to have fun with, head on over to Scotty Burg-er for Thursday board game night, hosted by Main Street Fun and Games. There’s always someone to play games with. The fun goes from 5:30 to 8 pm and for $5 you can play all the games you want. Join a table or bring a date. I recom-mend the sangria and a game of Happy Salmon to get the party started.
Water Safety
With the warm weather, many of us find ourselves in, on or near a lake at this time of year. We are lucky to live in such a place. Please use common sense around water. Many incidents involve drugs, alcohol, horse play or any combination of these. Make sure you know the water you are entering and be aware of other boats, swimmers, etc. Have an incredible and safe summer.
Down to the Jokes
So I sit here with most of my writing done this week I just have to come up with a dozen or so jokes to fill the pages. And really, I am not that funny. It is a tricky part of the week. I hope you enjoy the odd smile.
Fishing Tips
It is fun to get out there and catch some fish. It is even more fun if they are a bit bigger. So practice ‘catch and release’ techniques. A fish that has been released will be a bit tougher to catch again and will also be bigger next time. It adds to the fun. Take a new or young fisherperson with you. It is always a thrill to see someone catch a fish for the first time.
Camping Tidbit
Often when you travel through a back country camping area you will see many vehicles with their hoods open. Some are wide open while others are just propped open a bit with a piece of wood. I used to wonder why. As it turns out, it is to keep the packrats out of the engine compartment. They like to nest in warm, dark places and the open hood lets in enough light to discourage them.
Similarly, you often see vehicles surround-ed by chicken wire at trail heads. This is to keep the porcupines away. It seems that a lot of rodents like to chew on wires and hoses and at a distant trail head, you really don’t need that.
Older
Now I am at the age where ‘respecting my elders’ is a meaningless phrase.
It Is Right to be Kind
Are you that person who has to correct every little thing that people say or do? Nit-picking over nothing so you can be the ‘smart’ one. You might find life a bit easier if you learn to let a few things go. Not everyone wants or needs to be corrected. Some things just do not matter that much. Always correcting folks is basically talking down to them and makes them feel bad. It makes them not want to be around you much. So work on being kind instead of right once in a while. You will find yourself in a happi-er place with a lot more friends.
