Martin Luther King (Junior)• He was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

• He became a Christian Minister at the age of 18.

• In America, at that time, there was a policy of segregation (separation of Blacks and Whites) meaning black people didn’t have the same rights as white people and had to go to separate schools etc.

• Martin Luther King believed that God made all people equal and set out to change the laws by persuading people without using violence.

• In 1955, after a woman called Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus to a white man, Martin organised a bus boycott. Thousands of black people refused to travel on buses until the law changed. This started the Civil Rights movement.

• After many protest marches and speeches laws began to change.

• Martin was assassinated in 1968 at the age of 39.
