Surrey, British Columbia is the home to the Clo- verdale Rodeo. Held on May Long weekend, it has always been one of the largest rodeos that essentially “kicks” off the summer run of rodeos in Canada. White had a fantastic showing in Surrey placing second in the first round in Pool A and then coming back to win the second round in Pool A. She and her extraordinary mare Special Tack “Racey” shut the clock off in the Finals with a 15.925-second run, their fastest run of the event, to win Cloverdale. “I have entered this rodeo for several years and have done well but this was my first-time winning Cloverdale,” explained White. “This win was extra-special to me because it takes place in the area that I am from and being able to win it is something I’ll never forget.” The 3-time Canadian Finals Rodeo Qualifier gives all the credit to her main girl “Racey” who has been the cornerstone of her success at the rodeos over the last several years. The 11-year-old powerhouse “Racey” is by Plain Special and out of Cutters Brass Tack. White still owns “Racey’s” dam, making this year her 30th birthday! “Racey is a small horse, only standing 14.3 hands, but she is built like brick-house and has a heart that is bigger than she is! She tries so hard every run and she has a very neat and unique style.” Having won over $77,000.00 last year at the pro rodeos, White and “Racey” are a considerable force to be reckoned with. As “Racey” has gotten older, White has noticed how versatile she has become at both indoor and outdoor rodeos. “She has certainly become more versatile with age. When she was younger, she was crazy wicked in the smaller indoor barns but she has been getting consistently better and more solid in the big outdoor pens,” White said. Cashing in $24,300.00 for her win at Cloverdale, White and her friends and family celebrated the win with a fish fry and some good sight-seeing near the ocean. “I feel very fortunate to have won this rodeo and could not do it without my support system. My family and my friends have always been there 150% and my veterinarian Ty Corbiell at Cor Vet (Cor Veterinary Services) always keeps “Racey” feeling 110%.” Cloverdale Rodeo May 19-22, 2017, Surrey, BC Finals 1 Special Tack, Kristy White, 15.925, $20,000 06 sor. m. By Tanya Randall Lake Mehalic and her 12-year-old gelding Mondays Buddy (“Big Brown”) made the best run of their lives to win the 10,500-added Redding Rodeo in northern California. The victory was worth $4,106. “It’s all in God’s plan,” said Mehalic. “I was just blessed to be there. I wasn’t expecting it at all.” The 18-year-old WPRA rookie was fresh off of winning the Central Rocky Mountain Region Barrel Racing Championship as a freshman equine science major at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo. She hadn’t hardly returned to her Oro Valley, Ariz., home, when her friend Blythe Beshears of Gilbert, Ariz., convinced her to go on a rodeo run with her to California. After hitting Las Vegas and Sonora, Calif., the two headed to Redding and Ramona. Mehalic had originally planned on running her 9-year-old Lion Share Of Fame gelding Kan Count On Fame (“Big”), but he fell at Sonora. “I had planned on running Big, but he took a bad fall at Sonora,” Mehalic explained. “I’m trying to gear up for the College (National) Finals. Big Brown is kind of fragile—he’s been hurt in the past—so I’ve been trying to save him. Thankfully, the ground at Redding and Ramona was really good and I wasn’t worried about it at all.” Mehalic was up at Redding in Wednesday night slack after the first performance. “I had ran him in the jackpot the night before and he did really well,” said Mehalic. They placed second behind Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi and the record-setting Kisskiss Bangbang. “I didn’t have to. He really didn’t need it, but I did it more for my sake. So, I wasn’t nervous before I ran. He’s so easy. He runs in a hack and I don’t have to do anything. He does it all for me. He was flying. I was literally in tears after my run. It was the best run I had made in my entire life!”
Up to her 17.21, Stevi Hillman and Cuatro Fame were winning the rodeo with a 17.53. “Stevi Hillman even commented on my run, saying how pretty it was,” laughed Mehalic. “I look up to people like her. I was a little star-struck by it all.” After Redding, it was an “awful” 12-hour hike to southern California for the Ramona Rodeo, where she and Big Brown placed fourth for an additional $1,201.
Lake Mehalic & Mondays Buddy Set Pace at Redding Rodeo
Bred by Robert Jordan, Big Brown is by Strawflyin Buds out of the Dashing Cleat mare Monday Dash. Mehalic partnered with the gelding six years ago. “I know him better than the back of my hand,” Mehalic laughed. Mehalic leaves for the CNFR in Casper, Wyo., next Wednesdays. Afterwards, she plans on hauling hard to catch up in the WPRA Rookie Standings. “I turned 18 last June,” she explained. “I went a little last summer to learn the ropes and got my tail kicked. I just started going in May. Guymon was my first rodeo since Odessa in January.” Mehalic is currently third in the WPRA Rookie Standings with $6,410 won in seven rodeos.

Tiany Schuster continues to dominate the World Standings in 2017, she is now up to $137,336 and leads the world by $56,540 over #2 Kathy Grimes. Over the weekend, she won her 3rd Cham-pions Challenge in a row and tacked another $8,418 onto her record total. We thought we would catch up with her to see how she plans to attack the rest of the 2017 season! The way it sounds, it could be a year for the record books!BRR: Through this week you are #1 in the World and have earned $137,336 (a record for this time of the year); you have the NFR made, your horses are working good; what are your plans now? Do you have an amount of earnings you would like to get to? Or are you just going to go where you think your horses will thrive?Schuster: The plans for now are to not look back and keep pushing forward. So much out there still. I would say probably 65% of the money for the year is still yet to be paid. Why stop?
BRR: What is the biggest difference this year compared to past years?Schuster: The biggest difference this year from years past is we have a horse that can run outside. I am still looking to buy another big outdoor pen horse if one comes along. We never really pushed hard; never started early; never had a goal. This year started with a goal; from day one.
BRR: What’s the best rodeo related advice you have ever been given?Schuster: The best advice... hhmmmm... dont think you are anyone special. Because when you walk into Walmart they don’t know nor care who we are. Be kind to EVERYONE. The rodeo commit-tee people bust their butts to make these things possible. Be sure to thank them and they will do anything for you. You WILL need
a place to stay. You WILL want to get in that arena. Be good to people and things will be rewarded back to you.
BRR: Tell us a little about the team of horse you plan to run the rest of the year.Schuster: Right now we have 5 horses on the trailer. Show Mance, Born Ta Fame, Reclaim Fame, Firen For Jack, Version

Six All have won their own spot in the rig in one right on another. Firen For Jack is the new kid on the block and just need to figure out where he fits into the game. Pretty excited about him. Stands up well. Can seem to handle just about any ground. So we will just have to see!

We also caught up with Ivy Conrado just over a month ago after her win at the All-Star Rodeo in Denver, CO. The last time she and her back up horse, Fames To Blame (Famey), had just started to gel and get checks at the rodeos. This weekend that team banked $8,105 at the Califor-nia rodeos, moving up to #11 in the World at $35,363 and proved that Conrado now has a legitimate 1-2 punch for the 2017 season with CFour Tibbie Stinson and Fames To Blame. Here is a little more updated info about her team and plans.

over the weekend and what were the keys to you & Famey placing so consistently over the weekend.Conrado: My first run at Redding was kind of a trial run for Famey; because she fell terribly bad at Las Vegas running to the first barrel! So I was a little conservative on how hard I asked her to turn it but she really threw me some confidence so I asked a lot of her at the other two! I honestly wasn’t expecting her to stop the clock the way she did because we had a few mistakes! Hayward was just a fun pen! You have to go up hill into the arena & I was kind of infatuated with the idea of it. I really sent her and asked her. She gave me some really, really cool moves! The first two she felt like she just glided around, then at the third she ripped a shoe half off so that kind of sent us off the backside funky! She never quit trying & really slammed the clock! Thankfully Ty & Stevi Hillman helped me get her shoe off without taking any of her foot off! I so appreciated it! Then the Champions Challenge run was pretty wicked! I had JC Malone tack Famey’s shoe back on for me that afternoon thankfully. She was really honest at the first two & I darn sure asked her for what she had and she gave it to me! I kinda leaned in on the third and made her make a mistake or two but she still clocked! I was so proud, she’s so gritty!
BRR: The last time we caught up with you in April, you and Famey were just beginning to gel as a team; now you know for sure you have a companion for Tibbie through the year. How much do you plan to rest Tibbie and any idea how you will plan out the year for both horses?Conrado: Tibbie is going to be with Dad for a couple more weeks then we are going to get back at it! Famey has been a pleasant sur-prise! I had thought and hoped she’d be a good partner for Tibbie and I’m glad it panned out! I’ll run Famey at most pens that have a hard (difficult) first barrels that’s all I know!
BRR: A lot of people not familiar with rodeos may not realize how much care & maintenance goes into keeping rodeo horses in the right frame of mind and healthy. For the people not on the rodeo trail, would you mind walking us through a day of taking care of your horses leading up to a run at a rodeo?Conrado: Care and maintenance of really nice, top notch barrel horses is a whole new world to people. The amount of time I put into my horses each day is incomprehensible to most in the men’s
events. I think a good example would just be prepping Famey for Redding and Hayward after her fall at Las Vegas. She had some swelling in a leg so Darby Fox and I sweated it and iced it over and over. Put her on the theraplate, used the P3 and everything you could imagine. We assumed she would be body sore so we used the centurion laser blanket on her. After we got the swelling out I just poulticed her legs and iced them everyday. When she pulled her shoe at Hayward the first thing we did once we got it off was pack it with DMSO and Furazone. You just have to be diligent & pay attention. There’s so much to know and learn! Barrel racing at this level is a whole other world!

By Tanya Randall Ivy Hurst had an exceptional weekend, winning the American Qualifier at the D&D Productions barrel race in Chickasha, Okla., and placing at the pro rodeos in Perkins, Okla., and Abbyville, Kan-sas, with the 10-year-old gelding Hall Of Famer. Her efforts netted her $4,622.25. “It was a busy weekend,” said the barrel horse trainer from Springer, Okla. “I was supposed to be up at Vernon on Thursday, but tornados kept us from leaving home. On Friday, I went by Chickaska on my way to Perkins and got a couple of exhibitions, just to get him comfortable in the pen. I ran at Perkins that night and won second in the mud.” For the Qualifier Saturday morning in Chickasha, Hurst purpose-ly stayed in her trailer to keep her focus. “I honestly didn’t even walk into the building until five before my run,” she said. “I had no idea what a good time was. In years past, I’d get worried about what everyone else was doing instead of focusing on just making ‘my’ run. I even parked and warmed up away from everyone else. I wasn’t really nervous about making my run because I had purposely stayed away.” She and Hall Of Famer clocked a 14.890 to win the Qualifier and the Open 1D on a carryover for $1,822.50 and $822.75, respectively. “He was a little closer and a little tighter than he usually is,” she said. “I don’t really remember a whole lot about the run. It was a bit of a blur.” Hurst, who started working with a personal trainer two years ago, said her business as a trainer and broker of rodeo horses helped her make that run.
“I usually take five horses to the 40-head jackpot,” she laughed. “I don’t have time to worry about one did before I have get on the next. All the horses I have are different from each other, so I must live in the moment. When (Hall Of Famer) got a little close on me

Ivy Hurst & Hall Of Famer Capture D&D hosted American Qualifier in Chickasha
American Qualifier Continued From Page 27at the second, I just went with it and made it work. It’s something that I’m used to having to do.” After the Qualifier, Hurst went to Abbyville, Kansas, where she and Hall Of Famer placed third. “I felt bad about doing that to him, but I didn’t physically have time to swing by the house and pick up another horse. Kendal (Owen) had sent me with another horse just in case it was a muddy mess. I wouldn’t have done that to him. He’s on a four-day vacation right now.” Bred by Rebecca Lowry, Hall Of Famer is by all-time leading bar-rel horse sire Dash Ta Fame out of the Streakin Six, Dash For Cash mare Kels Sixime Jeter. Hurst purchased the gelding last fall from Sarah Zaleski, who had trained and ridden the gelding to a success-ful futurity career including a BFA Juvenile Futurity Championship. “I was blessed to ride him for her at Jud’s one year and I told her if she ever wanted to sell him to call me first,” said Hurst. “I bugged her for years.” Hurst spent the winter fine tuning her partnership with the geld-ing, and chose to forgo the winter rodeos until they were perfectly ready. “I took him to a lot of week night, small jackpots to get him to where I wanted him,” she said. “I was a little mad at myself when I missed the books for (the National Western PRCA Rodeo) in Den-ver. This was the first winter that I hadn’t gone. It was just always something that I had done every winter. Honestly, he wasn’t ready for that. In my 20s, I would have entered anyway. Now at 38, I’m not going to go just to donate.” By the BBR Finals, Hurst knew she and Hall Of Famer were ready to get something done. After placing third in the 1D in the Coliseum, she decided she needed to try an American Qualifier. Now with that goal accomplished, it’s time to see how the gelding fares on the rodeo trail. “He’s got me really excited,” she said. “I’ve gone to maybe five
rodeos this year. Now, I’m dying to go because I haven’t been going. He’s got me motivated.” After a four-day break, Hurst and Hall Of Famer will have a slew of Prairie Circuit Rodeos, including Garden City, Kansas, Clare-more and Shawne, Okla., and Fort Smith, Ark. “I’m trying to focus on the circuit rodeos, and maybe go off in July like to Cheyenne,” said Hurst, who is backing Hall Of Fame up with two really nice horses she has in on consignment—one of those being Streakin Dox, a full brother to Streakin Boon Dox. “I was talking with the lady that enters me and I told her I want to try to win enough this year so he could run down the alley at Houston next year.” The Chickasha Qualifier was the second one of the year. It drew 81 entries, paid nine holes and awarded 10 qualifying spots. Joining Hurst at RFD-TV’s The American Semifinals Rodeo will be Kassie

Headin’ For Home by Sherry Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries)
So often, we hear people say that they just do not know what their ministry is. I know I’ve talked about this before, but it sure bears repeating. We need to get rid of the lie, the mindset,
that WE have no value, but BOY HOWDY does so and so have a gift! Sure wish I could sing, ride, preach, talk, run, draw, like that other person. NO! God made you just the way He wanted you. You have a gift that no one else has! You have great value to Him. This week, here’s how I would encourage you to look at yourself in a positive light. You. Yes, you, will be the only person RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE. YOU will be the one at the gas station, the grocery store, the job or in your home. YOU can bring the light of God into that space and make a difference right there! God won’t
have the best singer in the world right where YOU are. Can you see that? I got so excited that I’m eager to see just who God runs by me! You and I can make a difference in this world. We need only to keep our eyes on Him and not everyone else.
Mike and Sherry Morrison pastor “Church at the Barn” in Gillette, WY. They also travel to other areas ministering at barrel races, ranches, rodeos, churches
and home Bible studies. Check out our schedule online. You can also download all Bible studies by visiting our website: m-m-m.org or contact us at: PO Box 2439, Gillette, WY. 82717, 307/685-2272.
