Go rafting with the Outdoor Club By Frank Sturm There is still time to join one of the most exciting organizations onthe UMass Dartmouth campus. Come join the Outdoor Club every Wednesday night at 5:15 pm in the 007 room of the Campus Center to learn how this spring the organization has scheduled a variety of exciting activities to satisfy everyone's thirst for adventure. Did you ever want to feel that rush of adrenaline asyouzip down Maine's class IVwhite water? What aboutliftingyourself through New Hampshiret beautiful hardwood forests? Ot if vou want to stay closer to UMass Dartmouth, iruu. you ever wondered what it might be like to navigate through a forest at night using only the light of the moon and head lamps? These are just a few trips the club will take next month. This spring the Outdoor Club will hold its largest trip, the annual, and much talked about white water rafting adventure. Open to all members, from April 30 through May 2, the organization will travel to West Forks, Maine to hit class III to IV white water with the Magic Falls Rafting Company. foe Coon, President of the Outdoor Club said, "For years rafting has been our staple trip and this year is no different. Last spring we rafted the Concord River for a day, but we knew members wanted a weekend excursion. This will be an excellent way to end our seasonl' Although rafting is only open to members of the Outdoor Club, anyone at Umass Dartmouth can pay the generous $10 club membership fee and sign up for the trip. The cost of the trip is $70 per member and a $40 deposit is due upon the initial sign up. At first this price may seem hefty but then you'll realize what this price includes. All attendees will receive two nights of camping, rafting class III to IV rapids, wetsuit rental (not booties), a light breakfast Saturday morning, BBQ during or right after the rafting trip, dinner Saturday night, a video presentation after trip, and full use of facilities which include a pool, hot tub, volleyball, horseshoes, and float tubes. When you think about it, it's not a bad way to spend a weekend away from campus. But what if you're not friends with anyone who plans to attend the trip? Coon believes this is not a problem. 'At some point we are all new to this organization. Some of us join in the fall, while others find time to join throughout the spring. That is what makes this organization unlike any other.
