Australia won by 13 runs to lead the best-of-three series 1-0. CRICKET By DAVID BENIUK in Hobart CAMERON White justified his return to the national side with a brilliant batting dis- play as a new-look Australia downed England by 13 runs last night in their opening Twenty20 clash at Bellerive. White smashed 75 from 43 balls in his first appearance for Australia since 2012, help- ing the home side to a formi- dable 4-213 after they won the toss and batted. The 30-year-old helped him- self to six boundaries and four sixes as the home side took a 1-0 lead in the three- match T20 series. White and opening partner Aaron Finch (52 from 31) put on 106 before debutant Chris Lynn showed his class with three sixes in his late cameo of 33 from 19. Nathan Coulter-Nile (4-30) and Moises Henriques (2-36) then did the damage with the ball, a scintillating Ravi Bo- para (65 from 27) knock Eng- land’s only real highlight. Skipper of unbeaten Big Bash League outfit the Mel- bourne Stars, White last played a T20 match for Aust- ralia against the West Indies in the World Twenty20 tour- nament in Colombo in Oct- ober 2012. He last played a ODI in 2011 and a Test in 2008. Needing to equal their high- est T20 international total, England never really looked in it, despite Bopara’s late fireworks. They lost Michael Lumb (9 from 6) to a meek prod to mid- off at 1-14. Henriques struck twice in the fifth over, removing two of England’s dangermen. He had Luke Wright (9 from 10) playing on and then Alex Hales (22 from 12) lbw, the tourists reduced to 3-45. Maxwell bowled the in- form Eoin Morgan (4 from 4) at 4-51 and England were in strife. They were as good as gone when Coulter-Nile had Jos Buttler (20 from 14) and Joe Root (32 from 24) caught in the deep in the 12th over at 6-100. A flurry of seven sixes from Bopara wasn’t enough to re- vive their hopes and they fin- ished at 9-200. 38 NT NEWS. The tourists chased down the Southern Stars’ 3-150 with 13 balls to spare, skipper Charlotte Edwards starring with an England record 92no from 59 balls. Australia needed to win the opening T20 match to keep the multi-format series alive but, after hopes were raised by two straight one- day wins, England retained the Ashes. Broncos’ Hunt for attack weapon BRISBANE playmaker Ben Hunt is determined to kickstart his stalled career this season and help reinvigorate the Broncos as a premiership force. A utility player for much of his career since making his NRL debut at 19, Hunt shapes as a key figure in the Broncos’ efforts to rebound from their worst season. Hunt is set to be called on by coach Anthony Griffin to spark the Broncos’ attack. Key recruit Ben Barba shapes as a crucial cog in the Broncos’ attack. Folau primed for pivotal role NOT content with being the most damaging runner in Australian rugby, Waratahs fullback Israel Folau is preparing to take his game to the next level by turning himself into a ball-player in 2014. Folau is certain to start the Super Rugby season in the No. 15, ending any thought the Waratahs might have had to try him in the centres. With his big frame and unique physical power, Folau proved in his debut season of rugby that he’s difficult to stop at the best of times. FOOTROT FLATS Women All Stars go on parade From Back Page The AFLNT also will send copies of the game to AFL re- cruiters to give NT players the best possible chance at be- ing drafted. AFLNT talent and educat- ion manager Tavis Perry said players 18 and over can nomi- nate for the match, but they are specifically targeting those aged between 18 and 25 under an AFL directive. ‘‘The AFL have told us that girls aged over 25 are less like- ly to get drafted this year,’’ he said. ‘‘I’m happy to play the strongest girls in our All Stars clash and then the AFL clubs (Melbourne and West- ern Bulldogs) can make their own selections.’’ AFLNT is hoping to build on the Territory’s inaugural Youth Girls Kickstart Cham- pionship victory, which show- cased the best talent aged 15-18 from around the country. Pendles will lead Magpies Pendlebury COLLINGWOOD have an- nounced Scott Pendlebury will be the AFL club’s captain for this season, replacing Nick Maxwell. Pendlebury, a dual Colling- wood best and fairest winner, will be joined in the club’s 2014 leadership group by Maxwell, Travis Cloke, Luke Ball, Steele Sidebottom, Lachlan Keeffe, Nathan Brown and Clinton Young in a new-look eight-strong lead- ership group. The move completes a re- markable sporting journey for the 26-year-old, who had accepted a basketball scholar- ship at the Australian Insti- tute of Sport and looked set for a career shooting hoops. Instead, a change of heart led to his drafting to Colling- wood and a highly successful AFL career, which includes four consecutive All-Australian appearances in the past four seasons. Pendlebury has long been touted as a successor to Max- well, a five-year captain who led the club in their 2010 premiership year under for- mer coach Mick Malthouse. Coach Nathan Buckley, himself the Magpies’ longest- serving captain, announced his leader at a function in Melbourne last night but the club will formally unveil the new leadership group at its Westpac Centre training base today. Meanwhile, West Coast de- fender Darren Glass has the chance to become the club’s longest-serving captain after retaining his role as skipper for a seventh straight AFL season. Glass, 32, who took over as skipper at the end of 2007, has captained his side 121 times, placing him only 17 games shy of the benchmark set by John Worsfold. Powerhouse opening batsman Aaron Finch unwinds for Australia in last night’s opening Twenty20 International against England at Blundstone Arena Picture: ROBERT PREZIOSO Boof ends Rixon’s coaching innings AUSTRALIAN head coach Dar- ren Lehmann says assistant coach Steve Rixon no longer fits into his plans. Lehmann said yesterday the departure of former Test gloveman Rixon was part of broader changes to the team’s off-field structure. The news follows last week’s announcement that legspin great Shane Warne will act as a consultant to the squad’s spin bowlers for the T20 series in South Africa in March, as skipper George Bailey’s side prepares for the World T20 in Bangladesh later that month. ‘‘I’ve taken the opportunity to look at our current coach- ing structure and the levels of support I feel we need moving into the future,’’ Lehmann said. ‘‘I’ve mentioned pre- viously, I believe our players can really benefit from more dedicated skill-based training, which means more regular support from technical ex- perts to help work on specific areas of performance.’’ Lehmann, who took over as coach for the 2013 Ashes series in England, says he wants various specialist coa- ches and experts working with the team when needed. Rixon, 59, played 13 Tests for Australia and later coa- ched New Zealand. In 2013, Rixon said he had been interested in possibly coaching Sri Lanka but re- jected the role after the board offered financial terms de- scribed by Rixon as embar- rassingly low.
