Women were once required to wear long clothing with tight sleeves, inhibiting the full movements required of the games. Today, shorts, short skirts,

sleeveless tops, and more elastic fabrics have allowed women to take a greater role in these sports.

Golf and tennis are both sports that require players to use wide, sweeping motions of the body. A golfer’s swing requires freedom

of the torso, shoulders, and arms. Tennis, which also involves running and lunging, requires additional freedom for the

hips and legs. When choosing clothes for these sports, take special note of your range of motion. Your stride

and shoulder movements shouldn’t feel restricted or shortened by the clothing.

The fabrics that golf and tennis clothes are made from can have a great impact on their comfort for the wearer. As with other types of sportswear, material should breathe well and have a moisture-wicking element. For looser items, cotton is a classic choice, known for being durable, airy, and soft. For more form fitting attire, there are many blends of spandex with natural or synthetic fibers designed to stretch and move with your body as well as keep you comfortable and dry. Whereas freedom of movement is an easily determined factor, clothing material is more subject to user preference. Essentially, whatever will make you feel comfortable while playing is what you should steer toward.

Some golf and country clubs have dress codes that must be taken into account when buying sporting gear. Often, these guidelines are easily complied with. However, it is worth it to check a club’s specific dress regulations before starting the hunt for a new outfit. Generally, golf players should avoid denim clothes, halter tops, tank tops, collarless tee shirts, and sweat suits. Shorter skirts and shorts (more than a hand-span above the knee) may be pushing the limits as well. Clubs often require players to wear collared shirts, but this is waived in places for ladies.

Many golf shirts and blouses are fitted, but not tight, and commonly have a collared neck. Often they are short-sleeved, but sleeveless tops and dresses are also acceptable. In keeping with the classic style, golf skirts are often pleated. Newer fashions may instead use slit sides and stretchy fabrics for movement and comfort. Bermuda shorts and golf skorts are also popular fashion choices for women golfers.

With the greater amount of movement required in a game of tennis, the dress can be much more liberal. Functionality is a greater issue, so it’s perfectly acceptable for skirts to be shorter and tops to show more skin. Also, owing to recent trends in tennis fashion, outfits come in many colors and styles in addition to the timeless tennis whites. Now women can find many choices for stripes, patterns, or simply bold solids to add their personal flair to their tennis sporting wear.

Trying on a potential outfit should be like taking it for a test run. If you are in a store, don’t be embarrassed to move around to get the feel of the clothes. Get into your “ready” stance. Do a couple arm circles and see how far you can stretch your arms in all directions. Running requires large movements, so make sure the bottoms allow you to take a full stride.

After you’ve done your test, did you notice any difficulty moving in a certain direction? Is there any other type of discomfort, tightness, or excessive looseness? Is anything askew or riding up after moving around so much? Finally, do you like how you look in it?

Wearing gear that feels comfortable, doesn’t interfere with gameplay, and gives you confidence is essential for any player. Taking pride in your appearance can bring a lot to your game as soon as you step out onto the court or the pitch. With these guidelines in mind, have fun trying out new looks for your sport!

Before setting your heart on that sleeveless, short-skirted tennis dress, remember to take weather and temperature into account. Think about what type of weather you usually play in. If you’ll be outdoors in cooler temperatures, make sure to look into light jackets to match

In general, dresses and skirts are pleated or made from stretchy fabrics to allow for full movement on the courts. Due to the free movement of the skirts, many female players opt to wear close-fitting kick shorts beneath their skirts. Tank tops and sleeveless shirts and dresses are often preferred, but cap or short-sleeve shirts are also good options. Essentially, as long as a player can move the way she needs, style choices are left up to the athlete’s preferences.

your new suit. Keep in mind what materials will work better in warmer or cooler temperatures as well. A loose cotton blouse may feel better than a close-fitting shirt on hot and humid days. However, if you play in the fresh early morning, you may need heavier materials to keep you warm.
