Executive SummaryIn the United States today,

    environmental awareness and

movements have been becomingincreasingly popular and influential.

    Many companies, business, schools,

    and universities have been working

hard to endorse and maintain a

    healthy living environment for

    everyone. The University of

    South Florida is a university

with motivation to do its part to

ensure a clean campus, community, and overall

    environment. Many efforts are

being conducted to make sure all

    earth friendly goals are met.

    USF not only provides

    an education for students, but

    also provides a student life

    surrounded by many

organizations that focus onsustainability. The Office of

    Sustainability and SEAS are just

    two of the extremely important

    organizations at USFSP

    dedicated to promoting a

    healthy setting. The earth

    friendly efforts of the university

    have been nationally recognized.

The Princeton Review hasacknowledged the school for its

ratings of being a green school.

    LEED certification, or

    Leadership in Energy and

    Environmental Design, has been

    awarded to few buildings and

USF is working to get more

buildings accredited. USF isalso a tobacco and smoke free

    campus, allowing students,

    faculty, staff, and visitors to

    walk the campus breathing in

    clean, healthy, smoke free air.

    This notion encouraged USF

    Tampa to then designate 25

    smoking zones so that non-

smoking students there could aswell enjoy these same luxuries.

    The Student Green Energy

    Fund allows revenue to come

    in for further eco-friendly

    projects to be accomplished.

    Each different campus

of USF has their own specific

    way of participating in this

green movement. From theBull Runner transit system in

    Tampa, to the recycling

    programs at the Lakeland

    campus drastic changes have

been made over the past few

    years as the green movement

has motivated the world tobecome a cleaner, better place.

From the efforts of each USF

    campus, the university has

earned a B plus on their College

    Sustainability Report Card,

    tying and outdoing two other

    major Florida universities. This

    grade is an improvement from

the past two years, which proves

    that the sustainability efforts the

    university has taken have made

    a difference in the environment.

As we can see endorsing Go

    Green campaigns is making

    significant, positive changes in

    lives. Going Green is definitely

a challenge, but it is a challenge

that USF is beginning to tackle.

The Going Greenmovement has beenbecoming very popularwithin the younggeneration these days. From recyclingnewspapers, plastic bags, and with the use of theUSF cloth bags that

students can find at thebookstore, it has gainedacceptance from studentsalike. As a result,University of SouthFlorida St. Petersburghas looked into goinggreen to help outaround the community.

Before the greenmovement hit itspopularity, USF St. Petecampus was far behindother colleges on thegoing green efforts. The only environmentalfriendly project that theyhad on campus was

recycling plastic bottles. However, with recentactions such as buildingthe first LEED Scientificand Technology building, and now becoming asmoke-free environment,University of SouthFlorida St. Petersburg

campus is getting in theloop of finally becominggreen.

    Recently, USFs

    efforts to go green have

    been recognized through

    inclusion in The Princeton

    Reviews Guide to 286

Green Colleges, which is aguidebooksolely focused

    on colleges and

    universities that have

    demonstrated an above

    average commitment to

    sustainability in terms of

    campus infrastructure,

    activities and initiatives.

    With this announcement,

    USF is also ranked

    second in Florida and 5th

    nationally in the 2011

    RecycleMania waste

    minimization contest

based on the amount ofmunicipal solid waste

    generated per person on

    campus. Awards like

    these have made all this

    effort of becoming green

    finally worth it.

    What is the GreenMovement?

All across the world the greenmovement has started. The jeopardy

of a healthy environment sparkedinitiative in people, especially collegestudents, to take control of making a

difference in the environment byrecycling and conserving energy

front in order to keep our

    campus green (Student).

    The main role of this

    organization is to partake

in an active role ofpreserving the ecosystem.

    SEAS welcomes anyone

    for participation in

    keeping the university

    green; students, faculty,

    The SEAS organization

    at USFSP is the Student

    Environmental

    Awareness Society. It

    stands for promotingenvironmental awareness

    around the campus and

    community. On the first

    Friday of every month

    they clean up the harbor

    staff, affiliates, and even

    members of the

    community may join.

    Organizations

The Office of Sustainability is a lower branch of the Patel School of GlobalSustainability. Since 1995, this organization is committed to creating a green university. This is the largest environmentally friendly organization that USF has. They have madethe university more earth friendly by planting trees, creating walking and bicycle lanes tostray away from car emissions, implementing the Bull Runner shuttle system, and manyother green efforts (USF Office). Like the SEAS program, anyone can be apart of thismodern environmentally friendly organization. The Office of Sustainability has 4 strategic

plans that are from the mission statement website. Below is a summary of each plan.

    1. Strengthening and supporting research across the institution.2. Making the university a sustainable environment.3. Constructing an up-to-date clearinghouse about activities and supporting students,

faculty, and staff to enforce a cleaner campus.4. Creating a sustainable environment that supports an expanded teaching

environment and a more engages community and campus.*All goals are from http://usfweb2.usf.edu/Sustainability/about_mission.aspx

    Interview

    Question #1: Was

there a particularevent that ignited the

University of SouthFlorida to become anEnvironmentally-Conscious

    Institution? If so, what wasit?

Sharon Hanna-West and herstudents in the College ofBusiness organized a goinggreen jobs EXPO in the

spring of 2008, at which theypersuaded President Genshaftto sign the American Collegeand University PresidentsClimate Commitment(http://www.presidentsclimatecommitment.org/). Thecommitment obligates theuniversity to inventory andassess our greenhouse gasemissions annually

(http://rs.acupcc.org/ghg/2105/), and to develop andimplement a Climate ActionPlan(http://rs.acupcc.org/cap/607/) designed to reduce (andeventually eliminate) ourGHG emissions. Havingsigned the commitment, thePresident asked the Provostto create an Office of

Sustainability(http://psgs.usf.edu/usf-office-of-sustainability/) tooversee the commitment (in2009). Learn more about ourstory online:http://planetforward.org/idea/innovating-generation-s-usf/

Question #2: What doyou think USF's biggestachievement in the area

    of sustainability is todate?

Our biggest achievementsare probably the creationof the worlds fist Schoolof Global Sustainability(http://psgs.usf.edu/),and the nations largesttuition-based StudentGreen Energy Fund(http://psgs.usf.edu/usf-office-of-sustainability/green-energy-fund/).

    Question #3: What new

    plans and projects does

the University of SouthFlorida have plannedmoving forward?

    We are working on a

    campus metabolism

    mapping project, designed

    to model the inputs (water,

    energy, resources) and

    outputs (waste) of the

    university campus. This

    effort will help to optimize

    the efficiencies of the

    universitys processes,

with the greater goal ofsaving resources.

    January 25, 2010 was the

    grand opening of USF St.

    Petersburgs new Science and

    Technology building which

    earned enough credits to

    receive Leadership in

    Environmental and Energy

    Design (LEED) certification.

This is the first building in the

    USF system to earn this

    honor and it has done

    so due to its

    construction and

    operation for

    improved

    environmental and

    human performance.

    The 35,000 square

feet building is twostories, cost $12

    million, and houses

Above is the new Science and

    Technology building at USF St.

    Petersburg.

    classrooms ranging from

    holding 60 students to 20

    (Marquez). The project was

funded by PECO, which is a

    state program that finances

    education construction

    through taxes on utility

    services. The expanded

    classroom space supports a

    cross-section of university

    programs while the teaching

    and research labs enhance the

    undergraduate and graduate

    Environmental Science and

    Policy programs and the Pre-

    Medical and Pre-Health

    Sciences tracks, (Marquez).

    The Science and Technology

building may be the first to

    become LEED

    certified, but certainly

not the last, as USF is

    continually striving to

    become a green

    school by working to

    get multiple buildings

    LEED certified.

    More About LEED

Getting a building to become LEED certified isnot an easy task. LEED has several requirements

based on a rating system that must be met. The U.S.Green Building Council (USGBC) developed LEEDin 2000. The LEED committee develops the ratingsystems. The needs that need to be meet for a

building to be qualified as eco-friendly are they mustlower costs and increase value; this done by savingenergy costs. Reducing waste and conserving waterare also two requirements. The building must behealthier and safer for occupants as well as reducegreenhouse gas emissions. Our STG building, andsoon many other buildings are working towards agreener, eco-friendly environment.

    The University of South Florida

has gained recognition in being one ofthe top green schools in the nation.

Our university was recognized in the

    Princeton Reviews Guide to 286

    Green Colleges. The Princeton Review

joined together with the U.S. Green

    Building Council to determine the

rating system. USF was within the top

    80th percentile; therefore the university

    received recognition. Many activitiesof sustainability

    have helped USF be

    awarded such a

    modern and

    prestigious

    acknowledgement.

    USF hosts the

    annual Campus and Community

    Sustainability Conference. This

    conference includes many participants

that share innovations and ideas for

    Floridas sustainable future. USF was

also the host for the Going Green

Tampa Bay Expo. A student Green

Jobs Fair is also held for students

    seeking work to support the

    environment. As for academics, the

    University of South Florida includes

    sustainability issues in many general

education classes and there are several

    student organizations that support the

    green movement such as Emerging

    Green Builders, Engineers for a

    Sustainable World, the Student

    Sustainability Initiative, and the

    Student Environmental Awareness

    Princeton Review

    Society. Specifically, the Tampa

campus uses about 35% less waterthan traditional methods because

of the physical plant that lowers

    water usage by installing low-

    volume units and restricting

    watering certain areas of the

    campus. The Princeton Review

also noted that USF ranks second

in Florida in the Recycle Mania

contest. This contest is based onthe amount of

    waste that is

    minimized per

    person on campus.

    The

    dedication and

    support of the

    students, faculty, and community

    have been substantial components

of influence on the cleaner, greener

    environment and workplace at

USF. The award by the Princeton

    Review shows that the

    student body is

    environmentally

    responsible and

    conscious of the effects

    recycling, conserving

    water and energy, and

    overall creating a more

    sustainable

    environment for the

    community.

    Changes on CampusSmoke Free

Tuesday, March 20, was the first day that the University ofSouth Floridas new smoking regulations officially went into effect.

Now 25 areas are specifically designated for smokers to use andwhile USF is just trying to make the environment for everyonecleaner, students have mixed emotions. While the purpose of thisnew policy is to supply a healthy working, learning and living

environment for the campus community and reduce the risk ofsecondhand smoke exposure to students, the smokers on campus arefeeling they are being pushed into little groups and out-casted. Whilesmokers on the USF Tampa campus may feel segregated, only allowedto now smoke in certain areas, USF St. Pete has taken initiative tohave a completely tobacco free campus. They have a very strict policythat inhibits any form of tobacco to be used, distributed, or sold while

on campus grounds. They are providing atobacco and smoke freeenvironment for students, faculty, visitors, staff and vendors. Theenforcement of this policy depends on those of the campus, toimpose the regulations and to politely remind any violators of therules. However, any repeated offenses by a student will becharged with violating the student Code of Conduct and mayreceive disciplinary action.

    Green Energy Fund

The Student Green Energy Fund, or SGEF, is a way of

raising money in order to support green efforts within theUniversity of South Florida. For each credit hour, one dollar goetoward the fund (Student Green). Although additional expensescan be a burden for the average college student, this is a positivefunding program that can make a difference in the environment.

This year it is expected that USFSP alone will accrue $116,000 and aftethe fall semester in 2011 the revenue added up to $53,400(StudentGreen).

This fund is meant to reduce energy waste, encourage renewableenergy on campus, and overall reduce the universitys carbon footprint. As of January 2012 it is unclear where the money will go directly, but th

committee has many ideas to make the St. Pete campus anenvironmentally friendly one. These ideas include doing energy auditson the buildings, looking into efficient lighting, as well as solar panels.Proposals may be submitted to the Office of Sustainability but there aremany requirements that must be met in order for the suggestion to beaccepted. These requirements can be found atusfweb2.usf.edu/sustainability/sgef-overview.aspx. USF St. Pete is oneof the first schools in the southeast to receive SGEF. Since this fund hasonly begun last year, there is definitely a bright future ahead for using thmoney to create a greener school.

The Sarasota-Manateecampus of USF is also workingtowards a greener environmentin new ways. Like the St.Petersburg campus, in 2011they were working towardsgetting a LEED certification onseveral buildings. Also in 2011the campus central energychiller plant went from an air-cooled system to a water-cooled

system that stores ice at night(USF Sarasota). This transitionhas allowed the cost to decreaseas well as the energy usage.Because this campus is workingto get everything LEEDcertified, they are also changingthe energy consumption habits.Actions being done are usinghigh efficiency fluorescent andLED lighting, occupant sensors

for the lighting and airconditioning in classrooms, andreducing the use of high-energyusage machines at night.

The Tampa campus is muchlarger than the others, so it hasmany more green efforts. TheBull Runner, for example, is atransit bus system that runs on

biodiesel fuel(Sustainability). There isalso now a new car chargingstation at the Tampacampus (Sustainability). This promotes and incentivefor the use of electric carsfor a greener, pollutant freeenvironment in thecommunity and on campus.

    The Lakeland

Polytechnic campus beganto show their participationin the green movement in2008. This is when they

began to recycle paperproducts, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles. In 2010,USF Polytechnic recycledenough pounds of paperand cardboard equal to theweight of six cars. Each

campus may be apart of thesame USF system, but eachone has different ways ofcontributing to USFs goalsof becoming a cleaner, pollutant free world.

The University of SouthFlorida has participated inmany activities that havemade the campuses moreenvironmentally friendly, butwhat about each campusindividually? There are fourmain campuses of USF; theyare located in St. Petersburg,Sarasota-Manatee, Tampa,

    and Lakeland.

The St. Petersburg campusis located on the water, sothere are many efforts that gointo keeping the waterhealthy, clean, and pollutantfree. The organization SEAS,explained previously, has itshome base here at the St.Petersburg campus. Also atUSFSP is the fairly newscience and technology

building with the LEEDcertification. In addition tothis building is also a newmultipurpose center, which isin progress of beingconstructed and will haveLEED certification.

USF is often viewed as oneestablishment, but because it is made of

four separate campuses there are variousactions that each campus has done to

    become earth friendly

    Grades

    The grades above are from

    the College Sustainability

    Report Card. Overall, the

    University of South Florida

received a B plus, which was

higher than last year. This is

considered to be a fairly good

    grade compared to other

    highly notorious schools of

    Florida. The University of

    Florida also received a B

    plus, but Florida State earned

a C. The results are based on

    ten categories that were

    gathered from multiple

    surveys that were taken from

    students and faculty from

    April to September

    (University). Results were

    also generated from public

    resources about the

    schools. Because of this

    report card and the efforts

    of being earth friendly,

    USF received recognition

    of being a Campus

    Sustainability Leader,along with 120 other

    institutions. The most

    important category of the

    report card is the student

    involvement. The green

    report card committee

    noted that the Green

    Living Learning

    Community gives 25

    students the chance to

    encourage and enhance a

    more eco-friendly

    campus environment.

    The reason the university

    received an A in this

    section is because of all

the groups an academicprograms geared toward

    being green. Overall, the

    results of USF and other

    university green report

    USF is right on track

    with becoming a greener

    university.

    Conclusion

In recent years, the Green Movement has taken the world bystorm. Corporations, government agencies, institutions,

small businesses, and individuals have taken it uponthemselves to clean up the environment and make moreearth-friendly decisions when conducting business andgoing about their daily routine. As an institutiondeveloping in a world where environment-friendlydecisions are changing the way people live every day, theUniversity of South Florida has had to accept andovercome many challenges to maintain its image as asocially and environmentally responsible university.

Before the craze of environmental awarenessbegan, the University of South Florida had little or no

programs that promoted sustainability beyond the scope of gettingstudents involved in the recycling of plastic materials on campus. Thissoon changed, however, after a Grad student doing a project on campussustainability provided the facts and figures necessary for an effectiveGreen Plan to be put into place. Administrators and officials bought inwith no apprehension, and have never looked back.

The University of South Florida today is nationally recognized asbeing one of the top Green colleges in the country, and such merits arecertainly deserved as incredible amounts of hard work, resources, anddedication have been poured into the efforts to make USF a respectable, clean campus for its students and faculty. The Princeton Reviewrecognizes USF as being in the 80th percentile among 286environmentally-conscious colleges- a rating that is based on a multitudeof criteria including the presence of established and active organizationspromoting sustainability efforts, having environmentally-friendlytechnology in our facilities that lower costs, wastes, and inefficiencies, and increase value. Perhaps our biggest stride in the effortsthe make the campus a greener community is theUniversity of South Floridas Science and Technology

building, which was awarded the Leadership inEnvironmental and Energy Design (LEED) certification in2010. The grand opening for the new Student Services

building in August of 2012 is highly anticipated, and thisbuilding is LEED certified as well.

The University of South Floridas variousorganizations that promote a healthier setting on campushave also helped, along with the efforts of topadministration, put into place many policies that promotecleaner, help raise funds for projects, and much more. TheStudent Environmental Awareness Society and the Officeof Sustainability are two of the top organizations in the GreenMovement, and coordinate many of the activities and processes

associated with its advancement including the Smoke-Free Campuspolicy which became effective as of January 1st, 2012, as well as theGreen energy fund which raises funds for sustainability promotion

throughout the university by charging a Green Energy fee in the formof a minute flat rate per credit hour.

Moving forward, the University of South Florida plans to maintainits status as a leader in the Green community, and truly believes thatthe sky is the limit when it comes to moving the entire institution in acleaner direction. The movement is not just a local, state wide, or evennational agenda- its a global cause. With each graduating class, anotherenters into their first year at USF, and the efforts of students, faculty, alumni, and the surrounding community will prove to be an integral partof its development as they all have been for several years now. Withdeveloping technologies and new information regarding sustainability

and energy efficiency becoming available each year, the University ofSouth Florida has the unlimited potential to become the true leader inthe Earth-friendly community. German Cosmonaut Sigmund Jahn, truly captured the essence of this movement going forward when he said"Only when I saw the Earth from space, in all its ineffable beauty andfragility, did I realize that humankind's most urgent task is to cherishand preserve it for future generations." The University of South Floridahas shown it plans to do just that.
