During Monday morning (22 August) in Dry Doddington a young white male about 14/15 years old, called at an address asking questions regarding whether a camper van parked on the drive was for sale. Other properties with motorhomes or similar, had cards left asking to be contacted if they were interested in selling the motorhome / caravan / camper van. The male left soon after being spoken to and got into a white Transit van, driven by a second person. If anyone has had a similar card left recently or in the future sees a young male and transit van loitering in village locations please call 101 to report the circumstances, quoting incident 148/22/08/2016.

This type of incident is a common tactic linked with distraction thefts or gathering information on possible future targets of theft. By having a business card or similar to hand, when challenged the visitor to your property can give a reason as to why they have called.

For example: 'I was driving past and saw the caravan, here's my card if you think of selling'. If no one is at home to challenge the unwanted visitor, they get time to take a look at your home and belongs on view, either inside or on the driveway and any security measures that are in place. The best deterrent to these tactics is awareness and looking out for neighbours, by speaking to unknown people in a village they are made aware they have been seen and the likelihood of having their presence reported via 101, or at least being remembered. The easy target is always preferred and criminals don't like to be noticed, please also take time to check on any tow bar or wheel locks in use.

Spotlight on F.O.C.U.S (Friends Of Colsterworth United Societies)

The first of August was our annual Barbecue Day and the weather was kind to us. Bill and Fran manned the barbies and this year managed not to drop the sausages. Bill, being an exhibitionist, wore an apron designed to look like a man's naked body (never fear dear reader the crucial bits were covered) so of course he went round flaunting himself. I can't say who because this lady is usually quiet and doesn't say two words to a dickie bird but Bill brought a twinkle to her eye and was that a blush I saw? She will take a long time to live that down! Kurling has been very busy the last few weeks and we have welcomed two new members, Rose and Anne Marie, to our group and also numerous grandchildren. It’s really good to see the youngsters having a game and of course they are all beautifully behaved. They wouldn't dare be anything else!LUNCHEON CLUBThe next lunch will take place on Wednsday 21st September and will be held at the Black Bull at Market Overton. Ths is a new venue so will tell you all about it when we have dined there. If you would like to go somewhere new and fancy a little drive out ring June on 861400 and she will tell you about it.I will end my jottings on a positive note. At the barbecue we held a raffle and raised £101. We donated this to the Bowls Club who need help with new fencing. Our Committee would like to thank everyone who donated prizes and also Ted and Brian who ran the raffle and persuaded (made) everyone buy tickets.

EditorialVolunteers are still needed to for the forthcoming Plague Days at Woolsthorpe Manor in September. Looks like it could be a lot of fun and a good opportunity to dress up and terrify the tourists....and someof you won’t even need any makeup! Contact Helen Pack on 07715 110438 or email: [email protected] if you’re interested.

On a more serious note, most people will have heard about the “temporary” overnight closure of Grantham Hospital A&E Department.I would share my thoughts on this with you but I’m afraid they’re unprintable. ‘Tis but a small step from temporary to permanent so please sign the SOS GRANTHAM HOSPITAL PETITION form that’s probably been put through your door. It’s also available in the White Lion and the Co-Op. Don’t stop there though, let’s really let them know how we feel about this. Why not send an email to our local MP, Nick Boles at [email protected]. And whilst we’re at it, one to the Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt MP at [email protected]. May (pun unintended) as well go the whole hog and include our new Prime Minister, Theresa May, who can be emailed via https://email.number10.gov.uk/. Personally, I am going to respectfully request that she diverts some of the twelve billion pounds foreign aid budget to not only keep our hospital A&E open 24 hours a day, but also to restoring and improving the services there that have been steadily whittled away over the years. I have heard some say that this will make no difference as they’re intent on downgrading the hospital anyway. That may well be true but surely we’re not going to go down without a fight are we? If the A&E was shut at night a few short years ago, I personally wouldn’t be here writing this. Serious illness can strike at any time and, to borrow a phrase from the National Lottery (how apt), it could be you....or your loved ones. OK, rant over.....well, actually, rant is a long way from over!!

WOMEN'S INSTITUTEWe've done it again, another new member AND a dual member joined us at our latest meeting. It's more exciting than an Olympic gold and silver medal. We even had two visitors bringing us to a couple of bronze ones too (sorry, I must have been overindulging in the goings on in Rio). Making a return visit to the Institute, but we neither could remember how many years ago it was, our guest speaker, Jane Barnes, a farmer's wife from Somerby, gave us an insight into both her family and their business supplying Clawson Dairy with high quality milk from their 170 strong herd of both Friesian (you know, the black and white ones) and Ayrshires to make the famous Stilton cheese which is exported all over the world. The cows have played another part of their family history, Jane's daughter was called Charlotte after Jane's husband's favourite cow and her son Harry after the bull. Multi-tasking cows, very useful. Jane's favourite Ayrshire which was the most productive of all the cows was called Dot, I don't know why she looked straight at me when she told us this little gem but there the similarity with her namesake ends. Jane rears the calves by hand and it's a full time job. Even when she goes on holiday it's only usually for a week but then it's attending the annual Ayrshire Breed Conference. Sandra Quinsee thanked her for a most informative, interesting and entertaining talk. We were able to buy some of the cheese and delicious it was too. One lucky

member managed to win the raffle prize of Stilton which Jane had donated. County Federation have a few events lined up for us. A discussion on the resolutions on the short list for the 2017 annual meeting, another quiz night at Great Hale in November and a Christmas afternoon tea party with magical entertainment in December. Tickets were on sale for the Kesteven Group meeting at Grantham in October when Susan Hickson Marsay, a coxswain in the RNLI will talk on “A storm tossed lady”. She comes highly recommended, last chance for tickets at our Seotember meeting, non-members, including gentlemen are welcome to attend this meeting on the 13th October at Walton Girls High School, Grantham (see me for details). There were lots of entries for both competitions, winner in the Rose Bowl completion for a milk or cream jug were Kath Atter and Janet Bennett. Winners in the Stafford flower of the month competition were Helen Scorror and Gillian Dexter. Our next meeting on 2O September sees guest speaker Joan Tarrant returning (she who had me shuddering when she showed how to make a Christmas tree from a paperback book!). This time it is “Let's be creative”, a workshop for us to indulge in all sorts of things crafty. Competition is “A handmade item” so should you feel the urge to create things, maybe for your own amusement or as gifts for your family and friends, then Joan's your woman. She will be at the Sports and Social Club with us at the usual time of two o'clock. You will be most welcome and the cakes, which come with the cup of tea, are very naughty..... as were the ones served by Sandra, Helen and Lynne this last month. See you there then

at two on Tuesday 20th September at the Sports and Social Club? Oh good. Dot Williams

WHY DOES LINCOLNSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL WANT TO CLOSE FOOTPATHS?Definitive Footpath no.14 in Colsterworth and no.1 in Gunby and Stainby Parishes have been recommended to be closed by the Planning Inspectorate. Not because they are not viable. They have been on Ordnance Survey maps for 60 years and they are the only safe way for walkers to get from Woolsthorpe to the Viking Way avoiding the dangers of the B676. The Footpaths have been poorly maintained over the years although the remains of stiles can still be found along the route. The reason given to close the footpaths was that it was a mistake in the 1950s to add them to the Definitive Footpath list. Although it was the County Council's responsibility to draw up the list they delegated the Parish Councils to do it. It went through the due consultation process. So why is it now that it needs to be closed? Is it because of the need for Mineral (limestone) Extraction? Anyone who objects to the Inspector's proposed modifications has between 12 August and 9 September 2016 to make their views known. Planning Inspectorate, Clive Richards (Rights of Way Section) email: [email protected]. Tel 0303 444 5502. The Planning Inspectorate, 3/G Hawk Wing, Temple Quay House, 2 The Square, Bristol, BS1 6PNFrankly the way this has been handled leaves a bad taste in one's mouth because of the lack of openness by the County Council and really there should be a Public Inquiry which is being avoided by saying it was a mistake to add them to the Definitive list – the fault belongs to the County but is there any redress against the County Council?Derrick Hamilton-Hinds

Over the summer months so far there have only been a few reports of the opportunist criminal act. Given the up and down nature of the summer weather, less of us are taking the chance on leaving windows open to let the fresh air in as the rain or cold weather has stopped us doing so. This is just a reminder to keep the thought in mind of 'what if', by locking doors and windows when away from home or whilst at the bottom of the garden it greatly reduces the chance of being a victim. An open window is an invitation to some to take advantage and snatch a wallet, mobile phone or car keys. Although the school holiday period is coming to an end many people are still away from home or will be over coming weeks, do speak to trusted neighbours and ask them to keep an eye on your property, consider asking them to park on your drive if possible / suitable and check that post isn't building up. Cycle crime is a common problem in the built-up Grantham area, but not exclusively so, bikes should always be locked through the frame to an immovable object like railings or a street light when out and about, any garages or sheds used must be locked when storing bikes. A rural location does lessen the risk but won't protect a bike from theft, many of the bikes I see in the villages are of a significantly higher value than those on the streets of Grantham and as such offer a higher reward if stolen.Make sure all details of your bike are recorded, frame number, make, model and unique markings or additional equipment, also check your insurance details should the worst happen, is your bike covered? Some policies have very restrictive wording on where a bike is covered and the maximum value of a bike that would be covered as part of a home insurance policy.

NATURAL HISTORY BULLETIN

At the time of writing this, summer is coming to an end, gale force winds have been blowing and there are reports of trees blown down — decades to grow, down in minutes. Migratory birds are fledged. The first to leave are the Swifts and they were last seen on August 5th (thank you for the reports confirming this). House Martins gathering on the roof tops of a group of new buildings underline the fact that they are now the highest point in the area. Like the Swifts, the numbers are good but Swallows seem not to have fared well. Perhaps there will be success with second attempts to nest. No Turtle Doves recorded for the second year running and Spotted Flycatchers have not be seen in a garden where they have bred for years. More records of Cuckoos this year. The Grey Wagtails have been on the Witham. There have been regular sightings of Stock Doves. Of our resident birds, Kingfishers are still on the River Witham. There are plenty of both Sparrowhawks and Kestrels. Regular sightings of Bullfinches include those seen in gardens. Stock Dove numbers seem as in previous years. We are all used to Buzzards and Kites in the skies above our villages but now they are even found occasionally in gardens.

Disturbingly Kites are known to take Rabbits and there has been a report of a Buzzard predating a Leveret. A young Hedgehog was rescued from a jitty alongside a road and taken into a neighbouring garden. Kept for a short time in a box with straw, food and water it was allowed to make its own way out and has been seen, apparently in good health foraging in the garden since. It has access to gardens on either side, but not to the road.

Butterflies have had a bad year everywhere, with numbers of flying adults down. In August Speckled Woods, Meadow Browns, Gatekeepers, Large and Small Whites, Common Blues, Holly Blues, Red Admirals, Small Tortoiseshells and the first Commas and Brimstones, have all been in gardens. In addition there have been Small Heaths and Small Skippers on the roadside verges. There were a number of migrant Painted Ladies coming in on the north Lincs coast so

perhaps they will find their way down to us. Two very handsome Dragonflies have been seen on ponds - the gold and green Common Hawker and the vivid Blue Darter. The River Witham seems in good heart, especially where management has produced pool like areas and riffles, which the Trout and English Crayfish enjoy.

To look for in September Grasshoppers and Bush Crickets reach their full size. The former are found on our verges and the latter where there is scrub including in Twyford Wood. Dragonflies and Damselflies continue flying well into autumn. Leaves and fruits have all kinds of strange growths and misshapes caused by gall forming insects. Oak trees are a rich source of these. I look forward to all your records at 61 Woolsthorpe Road, 860461, e-mail jnostler @hotmail.co.uk Jane Ostler

National Garden Scheme Open Garden in Woolsthorpe by Colsterworth

On Sunday 21 August from 12.00-17.00 Lucienne and Neil Bennett opened their garden at 45 Newton Way to the public for charity under the NGS scheme. The weather cooperated and Colin Russell and Hugh Butterworth sold 110 entrance tickets. The 3 ladies serving tea and cakes were kept very busy (Margaret Winn, Heather Butterworth and Margaret Beattie) and the plant stall was 'manned' by Jane Ostler and Ruth Hollis. We would like to thank all our helpers and the public for supporting this event. £700.50 was raised which will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support via the NGS.

COLSTERWORTH NATURE TRAILWork to continue the development of the old Woolsthorpe Railway Line into the Colsterworth Nature Trail has been continuing throughout the summer. Recent projects have seen the opening up of a meeting area for the Beavers and Cubs and the clearing of trees and nettles from the Bridge End of the trail. The aim at the Bridge End is to provide a seating area from which to enjoy the beautiful view across the fields towards the village. Steps down the slope will be put in and benches placed from which to enjoy the view. Work is also continuing to develop the old railway sidings at the extreme West end of Woolsthorpe into a flower meadow and thanks go to the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust for the help and advice they have given us on this project. It will take some time though and does involve the cutting down of some of the existing plants on a rotational basis throughout the year. Don't worry though, there is a plan - the Wildlife Trust call it 'Conservation by Destruction' - and it is necessary to prevent the area turning into scrub. It'll be worth it in the long term. Future projects will include the development of a more permanent area for the Beavers and Cubs and the removal of the encroaching scrub along the length of the trail. None of the work done would have been possible without the generous help of our band of willing volunteers and my thanks and the thanks of the Parish Council go out to them. We are always open to additional members and if anyone fancies a couple of hours in the fresh air every now and again, in the company of like minded people, please contact me on 07908 741974. Weekdays or weekends are possible, just let me know. You can follow what we've been up to on Facebook, by going to 'Colsterworth Nature Trail'. Mo Taylor

Colsterworth Pre-SchoolIt is hard to believe that we have come to the end of yet another very successful year with a fantastic group of children. What a successful year it has been, yet again the pre-school has seen dramatic achievements made by all children in the setting particularly those children who will be leaving us to start their new adventure at school. We will certainly miss them all but we are looking forward to welcoming our younger pre-schoolers back in September along with all our new starters. We have lots of exciting activities planned for the coming term. Our theme of Superheroes will enable children to explore their imagination through Superhero play whilst learning to play co-operatively with other children and developing their physical skills. There will also be many opportunities for messy play, cooking, den building, potion making and lots more. Most importantly our pre-schoolers will be having lots of fun doing activities they enjoy. If you are interested in finding out more about the preschool or would like your child to have the opportunity to have lots of fun while learning please contact Sharon on 01476 860046 or email [email protected] McGown - Early Years Teacher
