WELCOME TO SUMMER SHOWCASE 2012

For the fifth time in 30 years, our outdoor Summer Show¬case stage will be dark. We are still working on raising the funds to refurbish the facilities. But that won’t keep our Showcase from once again be-ing a special time to escape the summer heat and to enjoy quality theatre, music, and art. I hope that you will take advantage of all the great program-ming that CBC provides throughout the year. CBC has a strong tradition of quality theatre, music, and art. This summer’s productions include an uplifting musical for the entire family, White Christmas and a holiday comedy, A Tuna Christmas. Several out-door shows by the Columbia Basin Concert Band will also high¬light CBC’s ongoing commitment to the summer arts season in the Columbia Basin. Again, welcome and please have a great summer season in the Tri-Cities. I am glad that you are here this evening and appreciate your support of Sum-mer Showcase.

Richard Cummins, Ph.D.PresidentColumbia Basin College

WELCOME FROM THE DEANIt gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 30th year of productions for Summer Showcase. We may have grown a bit older, but I do believe, especially as we think about “Christmas in July,” the arts keep us all young! As I have said in the past, many thanks must go out to all of you for the many years of support and encouragement that you have provided our students, faculty, and staff at Columbia Basin College. Along with our theat-rical productions this summer, the Arts and Hu-manities Division also offers musical performances by the Columbia Basin Concert Band at various locations throughout the Tri-Cities. We sincerely hope you enjoy Irving Berlin’s White Christmas and A Tuna Christmas.

Sincerely,

Bill McKayDean of Arts and Humanities

DIRECTOR’S NOTEBased on the beloved, timeless film, this heart-warming musical adaptation features 17 Irving Berlin songs, great dancing, and memorable tunes. This iconic show was written in 1954, and like most 50s musicals it has only a little “stress” and a very happy ending. When amateur rights first became avail-able, we said “We’ve got to do it!” Having a “feel good,” family show in the middle of summer sounded like a good idea. Then the probing question, “A Christmas show – in July????” After much thought, we decided sitting inside an air conditioned theatre can make one think it’s December, and perhaps we’ll start to have those happy holiday feelings a little earlier this year, too. So as our amazing orchestra swells and the curtain opens, allow yourself to sit back, relax, and go to a time before cell phones, iPads, and Internet – a time when life was simpler and love abounded - and enjoy White Christmas.

ACTOR BIOS

Elizabeth Arden (Ensemble) Elizabeth is very grateful to the directors for giving her the opportunity to participate in such an engag-ing production. Though she has performed in various small plays, this is her first real show. Elizabeth is currently a sophomore at Columbia Basin College. After she graduates with her A.A. in the spring, she plans on joining a youth ministry called REACH, based in Montana. She loves horses, theater, cherry har-vest, volleyball, church, Jesus Christ, and laughing. She would like to acknowledge and thank her family and friends for supporting her dreams and passions. White Christmas has always been one of her favor-ites and she hopes that this Christmas will be very white.

Mark Barton (Ralph Sheldrake)Since arriving in the Tri-Cities three years ago, Mark has sung with the Mid-Columbia Mastersingers, played clarinet in a polka band, appeared in the CBC Summer Showcase productions of The Drowsy Chaperone and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, was a sailor in RLOC’s South Pacific, and most recently played a lead in The Gondoliers. But in a previous life he has played clarinet and sax in army bands, wind ensem-bles, and pit orchestras, sung in church and chamber choirs and pop a cappella groups, and strutted the stage on four continents. When not performing, he does physics with the LIGO project, cooks, travels, and rides unicycles.

James Callaghan (Ezekiel)James has worked on stage or backstage for every CBC production since arriving from New York five years ago. His first play was Push, for which he received an Irene Ryan acting nomination. Favorite roles include the evil investigator in Pillowman, Stephano in Tempest, various roles in the Players’ production of Almost Maine, and his most recent role of “gay boy” in Aye, No! He has also done sound design, as-sistant directing, and stage managing. James is getting a degree emphasis in both Acting/Directing and Design/Tech, and plans to transfer to Central Washington University upon completion.

Clark Carlson (Ensemble)Clark is an eighth grader at Carmichael Middle School and has been a part of several shows throughout the community. He looks forward to being part of the Hanford High theatre program in the future.

Rob Hanson (Phil Davis)Rob teaches choir and theatre at Kiona-Benton City High School and is thrilled to get back on the stage himself. Prior roles for him have included: Mark in CBC’s Summer Showcase RENT, an ensemble dancer in RLOC’s production of The Wedding Singer, and Charlie in Valley Musical Theatre’s production of Brigadoon. He received training and dance from Alaska Dance Theatre and received a Bachelor’s of Arts in Music Education from Central Washington University.

Molly Holleran (Betty Haynes)This is Molly’s fourth summer with the CBC Summer Showcase. Previous shows in the Tri-Cities have included: Nunsense, The Drowsy Chaperone, The Gondoliers, South Pacific, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and My Way. Molly is a voice teacher and classical singer, and most recently appeared as soprano soloist for the Mid-Columbia Mastersingers and Mid-Columbia Symphony’s presentation of Carmina Burana, last May.

Daniel Holzmeier (Mike, the Stage Manager)Daniel is a 2011 Tri-Cities Prep graduate and is currently attending Washington State University-Tri Cities. His major theatre experience includes various roles in Shakespeare productions, such as Peter Quince in A Midsummer’s Night Dream, Gremio in Taming of the Shrew, and Duke Frederick in As You Like It. Daniel enjoys music of all kinds, and for four years performed as the lead singer/bassist in the No-Name Band. He is particularly excited to once again be putting on a play within a play.

Dianne Hudson (Ensemble)Dianne is thrilled to be performing in her fourth CBC Summer Showcase. She would like to thank Ginny and her production teams for giving her yet another opportunity. Past performances with Showcase include Dreamgirls, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. passion with hundreds of children through Missoula Children’s Theatre. She has been privileged to play roles such as: Juliet (Romeo and Juliet), Callie (Stop Kiss), and Rose (The Woolgatherer). Her other inter-ests include Salsa dancing and really good Thai food. Thank you for supporting the arts!

Lisa Richwine (Ensemble)Lisa graduated from Pasco High and Columbia Basin College where she enjoyed participating in several choirs and musical theatre productions. After a decade-long break, her interest in the stage was renewed when word got out that Richland Light Opera (now Mid-Columbia Musical Theatre) was producing South Pacific in 2010, and a friend suggested she try out. She did, won a role as a nurse, and had a blast. Earlier this year, intrigued by the irony of White Christmas in the blazing heat of a Tri-Cities summer, she auditioned, won a role she didn’t know existed, and here we are! Lisa has volunteered with the Miss Tri-Cities Pageant and the Boys and Girl Club. She currently serves as Finance Chair for the Franklin County/Burbank Public Health and Safety Network.

Cameron Rush (Ensemble) Cameron has been involved with CBC Summer Showcase for the past six years. Somehow, after six years, Ginny finally talked him into being onstage instead of in the booth. Cameron recently returned from the University of Wyoming where he studied theatre and dance. Favorite past roles include: the title charac-ter in Hamlet (CBC ’08), Elyot Chase in Private Lives (Snowy Ranch Summer Theatre), and most recently Taylor in The Maiden’s Prayer (CBC ’12). He would like to thank John and Marlie for sticking him in tap shoes…he thinks. In the mean time, please enjoy tonight’s production of White Christmas!

Jen Schuster (Dancer)Jennifer has been in/or choreographed a number of productions throughout the region. Most recently she performed as the posteriorly enhanced “large lady” in MCMT’s The Wedding Singer. Jennifer lives in Richland with her loving and supportive husband, Dan, and her two adorable puppies, Butch and Sunny.

Kristin Swisher (Rhoda) Kristin received her BA in Vocal Performance at Whitworth University in Spokane, and studied jazz dance and ballet under the direction of Suzanne Ostersmith. She almost completed a dance theatre degree. Upon graduating in 2007, Kristin taught K-12 elementary music and choir and began coaching the Han-ford High School Color Guard. In the last two years, the Hanford Color Guard program has won caption awards at all major marching band competitions throughout the Northwest, including High Color Guard at the Puget Sound Festival of Bands in Everett last fall. Kristin performed in MCMT/RLOC’s Hooray for Hollywood in 2008. She has been a member of the Mid-Columbia Mastersingers (MCM) since 2008 and is an active member of their Italian Eight (est. 2010), a group that performs musical theater and opera at local wineries and events. Kristin will be performing in Yakima Valley Opera’s Magic Flute in August and in MCMT/RLOC’s Titanic in November. Kristin is married to Kevin and stays at home with Kiana (3) and Keaton (1). In her spare time, she enjoys singing, reading, sewing, blogging, and spending time with family and friends.

Lisa Richwine Cameron Rush Jen Schuster Kristin Swisher Porky Thomsen

Page 14: White Christmas

Porky Thomsen (General Henry Waverly) Porky graduated from WSU in Theatre Arts and Ag-Economics. He has farmed in Pasco since 1968 and owns T & R Farms, Inc. Porky has been an actor for more than 40 years (professionally for over 25 years) and has been in stage, television, and film. Porky is most noted for his “One Man Shows:” Bully (Teddy Roosevelt) tours from 1985-2004 and S.A.Flyin tours and television from 1991-2002, which was nominat-ed for a Cable Ace Award in 1991. In 2005, Porky was the winner of the New York Film Festival in a Short Documentary as narrator in “Kennewick Centennial.” Porky is also the spokesman for Toyota of Tri-Cities and does their radio and TV ads.

Kelsey Wehner (Ensemble)Kelsey is currently studying at Lucas Marc Academy to become a cosmetologist. This is her first time on stage since high school, though she is the choreographer for Hanford High School drama. Kelsey has studied dance since she was young and is excited to finally perform again.

PRODUCTION STAFFLaura Berkompas (Lighting Designer)Laura has a BA in Technical Theatre and Directing from Dordt College in Sioux Center, IA. She is cur-rently pursuing an MFA in Lighting Design from the Univer¬sity of Idaho and will start her third year this fall. She has won many awards for her lighting designs, including two National Commendations from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for All My Sons and UP. This is the second summer Laura has worked with the Summer Showcase. In August she will be working with WSU as lighting de-signer for the touring production of the Warden Project.

Marlie Buriak (Co-choreographer) Marlie has choreographed in the Tri-Cities area for more than 18 years. Her favorite shows include: Jo-seph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Sweet Charity, A Chorus Line, Crazy for You, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Singing in the Rain, and now on this list is White Christmas. Musicals that have tapping in them provide an added challenge and the cast of White Christmas certainly stepped up to the enormous challenge Marlie and John set before them. Marlie would like to thank the Sunday crew for the dedica-tion they gave her and John. “Every Sunday you each worked incredibly hard to learn how to tap in such a short amount of time.” White Christmas also gave Marlie a chance to work with a former student and now colleague. Marlie would like to thank a few people who made this show possible, because with-out them, she just may have lost her sanity. “Thank you Jen and Kelsey, for just being you and dancing so hard you fell apart and then still managed to say ‘you’re fine’ and keep going. There is not enough thanks for this next person--John. We learned that math is really hard, and so are fans. A journey I would gladly take again with you. The laughs, frustrations, headaches, and pain were all worth it, because I got to go through them with you.” She won’t know what to do on her Sundays and Mondays now that there are no longer meetings to work on some dance number. Last, but not least, Marlie would like to thank her husband and children, who encourage her, support her, and inspire her every day.

Ronn has won several awards for his designs, his favorites include the scenic designs for Assassins and The Pil-lowman, and lighting design for Le Liaisons Dangereuses.

Ginny Quinley (Drama Director) Ginny is a theatre and speech professor at CBC where she will begin her 29th year this fall. Originally hired as a free-lance director for summer shows, her involvement with Summer Showcase remains a favorite part of her job. Working with the many talented actors, musicians, and designers in this com-munity is an honor and a joy. Another highlight of Ginny’s job is directing the Blue Ladder Players touring children’s theatre, now in its 29th season. The group tours and performs each fall to area grade schools, bringing children’s literature to life. Ginny is past chair of Region VII of the Kennedy Center’s American College Theatre Festival, and past president of the NW Drama Conference. One of her favorite honors was being a part of the Kennedy Center’s National Selection Team, getting to tour the U.S. watching college theatre. JUSTIN RAFFA JOHN TUTTLE VERNA SCHWILKE

Page 16: White Christmas

John Tuttle (Co-choreographer/Dancer)John has been involved in a variety of aspects of Tri-Cities theatre for as long as he can remember. He has been a dancer, actor, stage manager, director, choreographer, stage hand, and even occasionally singer. He recently completed his first production as a solo director in CBC’s Maiden’s Prayer. He has been involved in multiple MCMT (Mid-Columbia Musical Theatre, formerly known as RLOC) productions and is looking forward to directing Into the Woods for them in the fall of 2013. He is also the production manager for Mid-Columbia Mastersingers and teaches a couple of classes at CBC, all the while holding down a “day job” working for the Benton/Franklin Department of Human Services. John has loved this community and its theatre participants for his entire life. He has very much enjoyed working again on a Summer Showcase production with a wonderful cast and production staff.

Verna Schwilke (Costume Designer) Verna has a BFA in Art from EWU and an MIT in Education from Gonzaga University. Verna teaches Fine Arts at Chiawana High School, and she is the costumer for their drama productions. Verna is also CBC’s regular costumer. Having started her theatre career painting sets, it seemed a natural progression to fill in for the much needed role of costumer, which is what Verna did for Okanogan Valley Orchestra and Performing Arts’ production of Pirates of Penzance. After such a challenging beginning it seemed easy to costume the CBS lead in for Monday Night Football, Passion plays, Christmas productions, and Chil-dren’s Theatre. Verna costumed Romeo and Juliet in Coeur d’Alene, where she also assisted with West Side Story, Into the Woods, and Anything Goes. At Pasco High School, where she previously taught, she costumed Fiddler on the Roof, Peter Pan, and Beauty and the Beast, to name a few. For Showcase she has costumed many seasons, including heading up costume design for The Wizard of Oz and most recently costuming Rent.
