Large open spaces (made possible by timber frame construction) give communities an opportunity to gather in multiple arrangements for many purposes. A successful community hall is one that maximizes flexibility, designed to meet both contemporary and future unforeseen needs. A grid provides a framework for flexibility within a regular increment. Applying infrastructure to a grid allows for an equal opportunity of services, which allows users to determine what they need and where they need it. This is in contrast to the standard practice of programmatic specialization, which limits the flexibility of a space. Whitcomb Grid proposes a balanced approach to renovation, preserving the historic character of the building, while installing a series of adaptable tools (Canopy, Light, and Platform) arrayed on grids to facilitate a wide range of events and activities. The bulk of the existing hall is preserved with a 20 foot extension to the North that contains support spaces and modern equipment. Platforms may be rearranged to create decks, stages, benches, tables, etc. A grid of retractable lights follows the lines of the existing tin ceilings. Each light may be pulled down individually to a desired height for task lighting. On the floor is a corresponding grid of dock points that lock the tethers in place to support partitions made of wool. 22 parking spots are buffered by tree lines and gentle slopes at lawn edge. 3 accessible parking spots and bicycle parking are at the North end. Fabric may also be hung from the tethers to create a desired spatial quality for performances and events. The addition containing support spaces was positioned to maximize contiguous lawn areas and preserve the historic character of Whitcomb Hall. The large window reveals activities inside, including the backstage area for the Main Auditorium and the Kitchen. Events such as outdoor movies are encouraged by the infrastructure of the platforms and canopy grid. hung wool partitions
