Timeline for “Smart Workspace”:Short-Term Investment Areas
Short-Term
Next 6-18 months
• Connection protocols: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11ad (formerly known as WiGig) – for high-end business hybrids and notebooks from 2H16 and for mainstream business devices from 2017.
• Wireless Charging
• Application layer protocols: WiDi (for Intel-based devices), AirPlay (only for Apple devices), Miracast from 1Q16, Chromecast.
Decide where you can leverage your strength to bring new products/services yourself or start working with partners to quickly integrate into their devices or purchase companies to expand your product portfolio and capabilities.
Participate in industry standards bodies to influence standards development and adoption, as connectivity technologies will continue to evolve quickly in the next 2-3 years.
Integrate Miracast and 802.11ad into your high-end business devices from 2H 16 (as they are OS-agnostic) and consider adding them into mainstream hybrid devices and notebooks in 2017 to support ‘Smart Office’ scenarios.
Examine the support of device operating systems for IoT features and networks, as they are inconstant and may not support IoT apps.
Enhance partnership aimed at integrating sensors that monitor device status/health, as well as location with automated support tools, resource allocation tools, disposable re-order and electronic procurement mechanisms.
Consider adding new sensors & technologies to devices to give them new capabilities as members of the IoT and smart office (example temp, barometric, NFC (for PCs), beacons, biometric sensors, etc).
Create partnerships with identity access and management solutions providers
Identify key verticals for wearables and immersive solutions for the next 2-3 years and work with marketing team to create vertical use cases around access/security control, identify authentication, providing employees with additional information in remote locations, etc.
Review/adapt your marketing and messaging around implementation/right devices for IoT in business on an annual basis, as use cases of Smart Workplace will continue to change regularly in the next 3-5 years and will increasingly incorporate innovations coming from the Connected Home.
Decide where you will develop own branded HMD and other wearable solutions and where you need to partner with other wearable and IoT solution providers to support your business customers’ needs
Create an HMD and immersive solutions product roadmap that integrates with enterprise mobile device management strategies to help your customers manage integration costs and risks
Clearly communicate how and where the devices can be deployed in vertical use cases scenarios that enable digital business transformation
Work with country specific ISV providers to deliver complete solutions, seek data analytics partnership to enable smart workplace environments
