We’ve all heard that employers want graduates with experience, but how do you get that experience until someone employs you?

This is where Macquarie’s unique PACE (Professional and Community Engagement) program comes in: it gives you practical experience while you’re still a student so you can get that all-important headstart on your career.

Through local and international experiences, PACE offers you invaluable work and life skills that set you apart from other graduates; skills that equip you for the real world and make you more attractive to employers. Who doesn’t want that?

You could be interning at international corporations like Microsoft or GlaxoSmithKline, working with Indigenous tourism operators in the Northern Territory, building houses for homeless people in Peru, working with local councils to develop community engagement strategies or assisting with a land rights claim in the jungles of Borneo. This is just a snapshot though; our range of PACE options are extensive.

But PACE is about more than preparing you for work; PACE helps prepare you for life by showing you how you can apply the skills you learn in the classroom to real-life situations, and by helping you develop maturity, wisdom and a deeper understanding of the world – and your place in it.

Get real-world experience before you graduateMACQUARIE’S PACE PROGRAM

Macquarie is the only Australian university to offer real-world experiences that are fully integrated into the curriculum.

Known as the ‘3Ps’, People, Planet and PACE units underpin our degrees and have been developed in response to the need from employers for well-rounded employees with both specialised skills and breadth of understanding who will fit comfortably into the workplace and the broader society.

To ensure that you study a diversity of units, you will complete a People and a Planet unit as part of your degree. You will also have the opportunity to undertake a PACE unit.

People units offer a range of socially focused subjects that help you explore everything from dance and linguistics to philosophy, history and environmental economics. Planet units relate to the natural world and include units on sustainability, law, bioethics, introductory physics, environmental accounting and astronomy, among others.

Windows of opportunityHOW THE PACE PROGRAM HELPED RONAN

“Macquarie was my first choice when leaving school. Several of my friends and family had studied at Macquarie and each of them strongly recommended I do so. Macquarie has great teachers, facilities and social activities, and the travel options make it so easy to get to.

The highlight of my time at Macquarie was an internship I undertook at Microsoft, which has led to a full-time position. The internship was facilitated through the PACE program, which is unique to Macquarie. While interning, I also undertook two PACE units. Both were really beneficial as the intern program itself was very intense and engaging, and the units helped me reflect on my experience.

The practical nature of studying at Macquarie helped me greatly in developing initiative and communication skills, which are essential in succeeding in my graduate role at Microsoft. Through PACE I was able to take what I was learning in my degree and test my skills and knowledge in a real-world context.”

Ronan Chander Bachelor of Commerce Audience marketing manager Microsoft Australia

“The PACE program is an important part of our recruitment strategy. What has impressed me, and why we continue to support the program, is because the students come in so ready to perform corporate tasks. We think about hiring PACE program participants as they have a track record that makes them incredibly attractive to us.”

Steven Miller Business planning manager Microsoft Australia

One of the key differences about Macquarie is that we don’t lock you in. We want you to get the most out of your studies so we support and encourage you to fulfil your potential your way.

Internal transfer Macquarie has an excellent reputation for the ease with which you can internally transfer between degrees as your interests develop. So if you start studying in one degree and find that it’s not the right match for you, we can provide you with advice about how you can best structure your studies to suit your capabilities, interests and aspirations.

Learn more about internal transfer mq.edu.au/internal-transfer

Diverse unit choice We also give you the opportunity to take units from across the University. So while you might be studying an arts degree, you can take units in criminology, finance or science, for example. This gives you a really broad perspective and not only allows you to study all sorts of areas that interest you, but also makes you more attractive to employers.

Investigate your choices http://handbook.mq.edu.au/2014/Units/UGByCode

Flexible learning options We also recognise that students lead very busy lifestyles, so offering flexible learning options is another way we provide you with a high-quality learning experience. We make it easy for you to study part-time, by distance, or in the evening. We also make your lectures available online which means you can listen to recordings in your own time to review content or catch a lecture that you couldn’t attend face-to-face.

Pathways We offer a number of pathways to study at Macquarie if you don’t happen to meet the academic requirements for entry. Your ATAR might not be high enough for the degree you want to study, you might be an elite athlete or artistic performer, or maybe you’ve been disadvantaged during your high school studies. You might also be transferring from another institution, or maybe you’re a mature-aged student. Whoever you are, we have a pathway suited to your individual needs.

Fast-track your degree Session 3 is an opportunity to accelerate your studies by taking one or two units during summer. It is intensive, running for six weeks from early December with five weeks of teaching and one week of exams. Changing livesA SCHOLARSHIP HAS ALLOWED NIDALA

TO PURSUE HER DREAMS

“I come from a family that doesn’t have all that much financial comfort. However my family is one of the wealthiest I know. They do not find drive in material possession, but rather in pursuing knowledge.

I grew up with the idea that I could change the world, and all I needed to do was to give myself the tools to do so. Those tools are education, hard work – but also opportunity.

Though my hometown of Broome offers me the support and encouragement that any home would, it unfortunately has very little opportunities for young people with great ambitions.

So very early I was pushed to leave home. I moved overseas to study in an international high school, and after returning home, was granted a scholarship that allowed me to move across the country and attend Macquarie to pursue my tertiary education.

I have four younger siblings and a countless number of younger cousins, nieces and nephews. I know not all of them will be blessed with the opportunities I have been given. However I hope my story helps to depict a positive future for them, a future where they too believe they can change the world, a future I would be proud to see them in.

To me, education and opportunity go hand-in-hand. When someone is given the opportunity to educate themselves, they are given the opportunity to better themselves, and in turn to give opportunities to others. So when given the opportunity, don’t think twice, take it.”
