Today we celebrate the Fifth Sunday of Easter for Year C. Today’s Gospel passage gives us the commandment to love one another. Jesus says, “I give you a new commandment, love one another! As I have loved you, so you should love one another.” What is new about it? You remember, the commandment to love had been given by God to the Israelites in the Old Testament. In Leviticus 19:18, it says, “"'Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people but love your neighbor as yourself.” This is known as the golden rule. Not only Christians, all religions believe in this golden rule. So, what is new? The answer is Jesus! Jesus becomes the new standard and model on how to love. Because in the “golden rule” or “the old commandment” which says, “love your neighbors as yourself,” we (ourselves) become the standard. So, by saying, “I give you a new commandment, love one another! As I have loved you, so you should love one another.” Jesus is telling us to imitate Him, to love one another as He loves us. How does He love us? Here are some passages. John 3:16! “For God so loved the world that He gave his only Begotten Son. So that whoever believes in Him might not parish but have eternal life”. John 15:12-14; “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. No greater love than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command”. Since God has demonstrated his great love for us, let us make a commitment today to put this new commandment into action; for this is the proof that we are disciples of Jesus. As Jesus says in today’s gospel, “This is how all will know that you are my disciples; If you have love for one another.” So, let us show the world that we are truly disciples of Jesus. Mother Theresa said, “In order to love, you do not have to do great things. You need only to do small things with great love.” Our Lady Star of the Sea Pray for us
