In an effort to make the shift from “reporting” to “continuous communication” of stu- dent learning, many teachers are using e-portfolios as a means of communication and reporting student progress . Using e-portfolios allows students to reflect, evaluate and set future learning goals by thoughtfully select- ing samples from different areas to be included in their portfolio. In summary, e-portfolio assessment will still communicate what students are learning, where they need to go and how we can work together to make it hap- pen. Assessment will be continuous throughout the year including two conferences and viewings of the portfolios at any time . Adjustments may be made over the course of the year to make communications more meaningful. Some of our other teachers will be offering a “traditional” report card similar to those that have been sent home in the past. While the report card may look different, the intent is to provide clear communication about student progress to parents and guardi- ans. This year, all of our student reporting will be delivered through an electronic for- mat. Your child’s teacher will provide more detailed information about how to access your child’s report. As always, if you have any questions about your child’s reporting or progress , please ask the teacher at the upcoming parent teacher conferences.

We would like to thank you in advance for your efforts in attending your child’s upcoming parent teacher con-
ference on Wednesday, November 1st. While the meetings are not long in duration, much valuable information
regarding your child`s classroom progress is shared. Good communication between home and school is essential
in helping to ensure student success. We encourage parents to be in regular contact with their
children`s teacher through email and the school agenda.
If you did not have an opportunity to meet with the teacher on conference day, please be
sure to get in touch to reschedule.
Parents as Literacy Supporters (PALS) is a family literacy program that gives parents and caregivers strategies
to encourage learning in their preschool and kindergarten-aged children. Within PALS, children learn to develop
language and literacy abilities that will help them adapt to their community and gain skills that prepare them for
school. Adults learn to support their children’s learning and literacy. Families are welcomed into their neighbour-
hood schools and build relationships with teachers, administrators and other school personnel.
PALS helps family members or caregivers support their kindergarten aged children's early literacy and numeracy
development. PALS offers two sessions for parents each school year .
Each session provides time for parents, teachers and a facilitator to talk together about kindergarten children's
learning at this early stage in their development.
There is also an opportunity for parents to join in activities with their children and to take home a bag of materials
for children to continue their learning at home.
Our first PALS session is on November 2nd in the
Kindergarten room from 9am—10am

Each Monday morning we have two Kings players coming in to read with some of primary classes. The purpose of the Read Program is for the Powell River Kings and Westview Agencies, in collaboration with the School District, to promote the importance of literacy.
Special thanks to our Kings volunteers, Callum and Mitch for donating their time to us weekly at Edgehill!
Every week a Reading Hero is announced. The Reading Hero will win two tickets to a Powell River Kings game and their name will be entered into a monthly draw for a great prize for their whole class and the chance to be 7th Player of the Game.
Our Reading Hero’s to date are:
Nikki Specht Grade 7
Angel Cunningham Grade 6

Dressing for the Weather As the weather changes, (seems like we have had nothing
but rain lately), please remind your children to dress appro-
priately for the weather conditions.
We try to have the children go outside at recess and lunch
as much as possible to ensure they get some fresh air and
physical activity. However, if the weather is dreadful and the
wind is too strong, we keep the children indoors for the
breaks. It is not a bad idea to keep a change of clothes in
your child’s backpack or classroom (particularly a spare pair
of socks and shoes).
A very special thank you to the many volunteers who
helped make the Book Fair happen this Fall! An extra
special thank you to Colleen Bomprezzi who spent
endless hours organizing and planning the Book Fair.
We always raise a great deal of money, ($2300.00)
which helps put books in our classrooms and our library.
We couldn’t have done it without all of our incredible
volunteers! Congratulations to Mackenzie Manzer the
draw winner , who won $25 worth of
books for herself and $25 for her class.
