In this presentation, I will bring you back. When I mean back, I only mean about 20 or so years, because that’s when computers started to be produced and used. I will go over how simple they were, and show you:O1st – 3rd Generation ComputersOEarly computer’s basic functions and abilitiesOEarly Computer Specs and computer languagesOEarly (and current) Computer CompaniesOAnd maybe the extra tid-bit or so.

Page 3: When these machines weren’t so simple and we had to run our own lives.

Even the earliest computers helped

bring us to what we had today.

Even if the oldest of the old, the computer mostly comprised of vacuum

tubes, helped further our technology.

Page 4: When these machines weren’t so simple and we had to run our own lives.

But before we had computers, we had special instruments that helped us make

these complex calculations on own.

O The AbacusO Difference EngineO AntikytheraO Slide RuleThere are more, but

these are come of the few basic ancestors that came up first.

Computer Generations1st – 3rd Generation computers

Page 6: When these machines weren’t so simple and we had to run our own lives.

1st Generation Computers

O These huge beasts were made up mostly of vacuum tubes

O Because of this, they over-heated oftenO They took up an entire room for just 1 of them!O They could only perform the simplest of

calculationsO Examples of some of the giant machines were

the Aniac, the Mk1, the Univac, and the Csyrac.O Some of the specs for one of these machines in

Australia was .001 MHz and 2kb of Ram. Not even a penny’s worth compared to today’s PC’s.

Page 7: When these machines weren’t so simple and we had to run our own lives.

2nd Generation Computers

O Transistors, a small semiconductor device, made these new machines:

O SmallerO FasterO Cheaper

Page 8: When these machines weren’t so simple and we had to run our own lives.

3rd Generation Computers

O Silicon chips were produced at this time, which brought about a very important computer technology.

O Computer Networking.

Page 9: When these machines weren’t so simple and we had to run our own lives.

But, what does a computer Do?

O I’ve told you what the computers are. But what do they do?

O Computer were built to make simple calculation originally, but as time passed, they gained more purpose.

O Finding InformationO CommunicationO Information StorageO EntertainmentO All in all, making life easier.

Page 10: When these machines weren’t so simple and we had to run our own lives.

O And in order for a computer to do these things, it needed some way to communicate with itself. So, we made computer languages.

O CobalO BasicO 4TranO And by now, probably many more

that we could never hope to understand without a working knowledge of computers.

Todays Computers, and Who Made them.I think we’ve had enough talk about the old

days. Let’s bring in something new! (Well, not completely.)

Page 12: When these machines weren’t so simple and we had to run our own lives.

The Two known Computer Companies.

Microsoft Apple

O These are known to be the two competing companies in computer production

O But what you don’t know is that they both started out from a company called

IBM, the creator of the PC. O(PC Meaning Personal Computer, and the release of computers to the public.)

Page 13: When these machines weren’t so simple and we had to run our own lives.

And now we have today’s computers, which are mostly

transportable.O This is the technology of

our era, and it has actually has come a long way from what there was. (Not in time’s length, however.)

O This is what we have today, but in the future, who knows what kinds of computer we will have? Maybe we won’t even need a console to use one!

Page 14: When these machines weren’t so simple and we had to run our own lives.

But now, the history of computers is completely up to us. Maybe you will

inspire it’s next great leap!

But for now, we have what we have. And I can’t really tell you any more, You are going to need

to figure that out for yourself.Make History.
