(V2) Quite some time ago I contacted Shell Canada headquarters in Montreal and got permission to spend a day, with the help of my daughter Jennifer, going through what was left of their archives from the 40s and 50s, the objective being to see what I could find about operations in Gander. I came across in particular the article below, from “Shell News” for December 1959, which talks about the lack of books in the library in the new Amalgamated school. When the school opened, there were only about 100 books available for 1500 students from Kindergarten to Grade 11. When Shell’s Eastern Division Operations, Frank Butler, toured the new school, he understood the problem immediately and figured something could be done. When he got back to Montreal, he sent a circular to all the Division’s employees for book donations. Due to the great efforts of Shell employees, close to 500 books, all in good condition, were added the library.
