When Mom Laughs “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.” --Proverbs 31:25-27 Any godly woman of noble character has these same traits. Her background and personality will make her unique, but her character will be the same. It is a combination of lighthearted- ness and wisdom. She laughs and she gets serious and has the wisdom to know when each is appropriate. A mom might act more angry over a situation than she really is because she knows what is at stake and she wants to make a strong point. And a mom might laugh even when she is a little worried because she knows her family needs courage. In each case she considers the needs of others rather than her own mood. She is no idle philosopher. That is a waste of time when children grow up so quickly. Her wisdom is realistic, practical, actionable. Every family should have such a mom. Many do. She has such character not because of her charm or skill but because she “fears the LORD.” The Bible calls this the beginning of wisdom (Prov. 9:10). Without it we haven’t even learned the ABC’s of how to help our family. The noble, godly woman has a concern for the whole group and ties that to her faith in the Lord. She knows she is working herself out of a job. Some day she will be gone, but the Lord will remain. With laughter, seriousness, with whatever it takes—it is the one thing she tries to leave to her children.
