WHAT CATHOLICS SAY ABOUT SALVATION

Good works in sanctifying grace are necessary for salvation “By the grace of Christ, we achieve the salvation

God desires for us through perseverance in both faith and works. Many Protestants, on the other hand, believe that one just has to accept Jesus as personal Lord and Savior to be saved, and good works are not necessary (they just flow from those already saved.) [The Bible] teaches us that our performance of good works is necessary for salvation”

(Scripture Catholic)

WHAT CATHOLICS SAY ABOUT SALVATION

A. Jesus taught that we must endure to the very end to be saved – Matt. 10:22, 24:13; Mark 13:13

B. Jesus’ teaching on the separation of the sheep from the goats is based on the works that were done during their lives – Matt. 25:31-46

C. Jesus says we are repaid for the works we have done at the resurrection of the just. Our works lead to salvation – Luke 14:14

D. At the judgment seat of Christ, we are judged according to what we have done in the body, not how much faith we had – 2 Cor. 5:10

WHAT CATHOLICS BELIEVE ABOUT SALVATION

E. We participate in applying the grace Jesus won for us at Calvary in our daily lives – 1 Peter 1:17

F. We rejoice in the “hope” (not the presumptuous certainty) of sharing the glory of God. If salvation is absolutely assured after accepting Jesus as Savior, why would Paul Hope? – Romans 5:2

G. All those who say “Lord, Lord” on that last day will not be saved. They are judged by their evil deeds – Mathew 7:21

MATHEW 7:21-23

"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' 23 Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!‘

Three evil doings1. Prophesy2. Casting out Demons3. Wonders

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE TEACH ABOUT SALVATION?

It’s a ProcessA. I have been saved (past event)

Rom. 8:24; Eph. 2:5,8; 2 Tim. 1:9; Titus 3:5

HAVE BEEN SAVED - ROMANS 8:24-25

For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God

WHAT CATHOLICS BELIEVE ABOUT SALVATION Justification

“Justification is an inner change of the person which is infusion and a declaration by God which is imputation.”

Sanctification is obtained through sacraments “A sacrament properly speaking is that which is

ordained to signify our sanctification. In which three things may be considered: The very cause of our sanctification; which is Christ’s passion: the form of our sanctification; which is grace and the virtues: and the ultimate end of our Sanctification, which is eternal life. And all of these are signified by the sacraments. Consequently, a sacrament is a sign that is both a reminder of the past and an indication of that which is effected in us by Christ’s passion, that is a foretelling of future glory” (Summa Theologica)

Page 18: When: Friday, January 30 th Where: Bryce Resort Arrive: Be @ Mtn. View @ 4:30 P.M. P/U: Parents pick up @ no later than 10:00 P.M. Cost: $16.00 for 2 hrs;

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT SALVATION

JustificationA. To declare righteous; “Just as if I never sinned”B. Forgiveness is when Justification happens and

righteousness is imputed. C. In Christ we have his righteousness – James 2:22-24

And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called God's friend. 24 You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.

D. Justification describes our spiritual position – it is unchanging

Page 19: When: Friday, January 30 th Where: Bryce Resort Arrive: Be @ Mtn. View @ 4:30 P.M. P/U: Parents pick up @ no later than 10:00 P.M. Cost: $16.00 for 2 hrs;

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT SALVATION

Sanctification To make holy, consecrate, or purify; purification 1 Cor 6:11 And that is what some of you were. But

you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Eph 5:25-27Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,

Sanctification describes our spiritual condition – it is changing. We can become more sanctified

WHAT THE CATHOLICS SAY ABOUT SALVATION The Church established by the Saviour was to be

a visible organization. Consequently, it should have external ceremonies and symbols of things sacred

Taking the word “sacrament” in the broadest sense, as the sign of something sacred and hidden. The invisible found in the visible

The principle reason for sacraments system is found in man. It is the nature of man to be lead by things sense-perceptible to things spiritual and intelligible. Now Divine providence provides for everything in accordance with it’s nature: Divine wisdom provides means of salvation for men in the form of certain sensible signs which are called sacraments

WHAT THE CATHOLICS SAY ABOUT SALVATION

Sacraments come in three classes1. Initiation2. Service to God3. Purification

The Council of Trent declared:

“If anyone say that the sacraments of the New law do not contain the grace which they signify, or that they do not confer grace on those who place no obstacle to the same, let him be cursed.”
