This year, we have seen a public campaign that has made it clear the 20-year-old singer is no longer the innocent girl we remember from Disney’s Hannah Montana TV series. She’s dressing in sexy outfits, posing topless in photos and smoking marijuana in public. However, the image she delivers on her new album, Bangerz, doesn’t match what we see in the tabloids — Miley the singer just isn’t that interesting. 2 The best thing about Bangerz is that the tunes are catchy . Everyone loves a catchy pop tune to sing at karaoke. What’s more, she has made two of the catchiest her first singles. We Can’t Stop is a summer jam, the kind of tune that teenagers can listen to in the car when they’re out on a Saturday night. The lyrics are bold — “It’s my mouth, I can say what I want to!” — with lots of chances to shout along. Wrecking Ball is an anthem for heartbroken lovers, starting out small and delicate but growing into a grand declaration of survival made through powerful vocals. I love it when an artist changes their image. It’s a risk and it keeps their music interesting. But Cyrus doesn’t quite know what she wants to change her image to. 3 In public, Cyrus is embracing Southern U.S. hip-hop culture, and she tries rapping a few times on Bangerz. Both Love Money Party and Do My Thang go down this road, but the result is mediocre. Cyrus’ Disney upbringing seems to stop her from really changing her image. If she wants to rebel, why not write “Sex Money Drugs”? 4 Bangerz gets less coherent with a corny country music track titled 4x4, a mismatched duet with rapper Future titled My Darlin’ , and a modern update of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ I Put a Spell On You that features dubstep called FU (OK, I like FU. It grew on me). 5 Looking for a new image is always exciting, but the songs on Bangerz aren’t as exciting as Cyrus’ tabloid headlines. They’re all so different from each other that I just ended up confused. ▶ Miley Cyrus Miley Ray Cyrus was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and is the daughter of country music star Billy Ray Cyrus. She became a teen star in her own right in 2006 when she took the role of Miley Stewart in the Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana TV series. The following year she began to sing and provided music for Hannah Montana, which led to her debut album, the soundtrack Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus. Her 2009 track Party in the U.S.A. reached No. 2 on Billboard’s singles chart. Bangerz is her fourth album.
