Salvator Rosa (1615–1673): Bandits, Wilderness and Magic

15 September – 28 NovemberSalvator Rosa invented novel allegorical pictures, fanciful portraits of romantic and enigmatic figures, both macabre and horrific; highly original and philosophical subjects. No other artist has created windswept landscapes of such emotional power, or figures of such dark intensity. Unlike Caravaggio, Rosa was truly a rebel, radical, anti-clerical, associated with libertine thought, and often in real danger from the Inquisition

The exhibition has been supported by The Arthur and Holly Magill Foundation

In the 9th century, Australian Impressionism & the Heidelberg School challenged the dominance of the ‘Victorian’ style. The First World War was a watershed in Australian and New Zealand history. In this talk we’ll explore the history of Italian painting through the eyes of such travellers, discovering how they reacted to the early Renaissance beauty of Fra Angelico or the turbulent exuberance of TintorettoLecturer: Jo Walton

Education Lectures

Degenerates and others – German Art in the 20th Century

Tuesday 5 OctoberMany major German artists, along with others from elsewhere in Europe, were reviled by the Nazis and included in the Entartete Kunst (Degenerate Art) exhibition in Munich in 937, but innovative and exciting German art started much earlier, with the Expressionist Die Brücke group in 905 and Der Blaue Reiter in 9. This lecture examines these early modern movements, looks at Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) of the 90s and anti-Nazi art, coming right up to date with controversial and imaginative artists such as Joseph Beuys, Rebecca Horn and Anselm KieferLecturer: Frank Woodgate

Constructing the Future: Early 20th Century Russian Art

Tuesday 12 October After the break-up of the Soviet Union and with the re-invigoration of Russia as an economic and political force, there has been a growing interest in Russian art. Russian buyers have made great efforts to ‘repatriate’ their artistic heritage. Moreover, recent exhibitions in London have underlined the importance of the Russian avant-garde in the development of modern art in the early 0th century. This talk will explore the work of some of the key figures, such as Kandinsky, Malevich and GoncharovaLecturer: Peter Scott

Futurism, “Poor Art” and Provocation: Italian 20th and 21st Century Art

Tuesday 19 October Italian artists of the 0th Century sought to break with the art of the past, to provoke and challenge notions of what art should be. The Italian Futurists celebrated industrialism and the machine, they encouraged radicalism and later supported Mussolini. This talk will look at other important and innovative Italian artists including Modigliani, Morandi and the “Arte Povera” group who used inexpensive, everyday materials to create their art works. It will also explore how Italian artists are still continuing to shake things up today Lecturer: Melanie Paice

A Highland Thing? 18th to 20th Century Scottish Art

Tuesday 26 OctoberFor many years Scottish artists found it necessary to travel south to make their names and careers in art, but with the increasing importance of the cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow from the end of the 8th century, an independent Scottish art scene became possible. These developments will be traced through individuals such as Sir Henry Raeburn, the first artist to find success whilst remaining in his native Scotland, and Sir David Wilkie, important as one of the first to export Scottish artsLecturer: Rosalind Whyte

All the speakers lecture extensively for Tate Britain, Tate Modern, throughout Britain and internationally

Legacies

Dulwich Picture Gallery is England’s first purpose-built public art gallery and houses one of the best-loved collections of old master paintings in the country. The basis of the Gallery itself and the collection was shaped and continuously developed by bequests

It is thanks to the generosity and the legacy of Edward Alleyn in 69, William Cartwright in 686, Francis Bourgeois in 8, William Linley in 835 and Charles Fairfax Murray in 9 that Dulwich Picture Gallery has become the outstanding place of cultural heritage it is today. In 0, we will be celebrating the 00th anniversary of the iconic Gallery building, built with a bequest from Bourgeois and Desenfans’ wife and designed by Sir John Soane

In order to continue to share this heritage with our visitors, the community and the next generation, we need over £ million a year to fund our activities for which we receive no public funding

Legacies are a popular, tax-effective way of contributing towards the work of the Gallery and the Gallery’s greatest needs. For more information on ways to include Dulwich Picture Gallery in your will, please contact the Development Department on 00 899 875.
