What’s On! In the Community 30
Congratulations to you, the community, for all of your hard work and passion that went into making the Mission 2014 BC Winter Games the biggest and most exciting event to come to Mission. Hundreds of volunteers and dozens of businesses and organizations came out to support the Games – Mission, you stepped up once again and made it happen! Bravo!
As we look forward to the next couple of months, there are so many highlights to anticipate: Opening Nite Theatre is running ‘Anybody for Murder,’ Mission Hospice Society hosts its ‘Once Upon a Time Gala,’ there is lots to do at Fraser River Heritage Park, and so much more – mark your calendar and don’t miss a thing!
For the May/June 2014 issue, What’s On! Mission will be adding 12 new pages to our publication. Due to increased demand for advertising and sponsored space in the magazine, we are excited to be able to expand and grow. This will allow us to offer more opportunities for community groups to apply for sponsored space as well as to introduce new editorial content so that we can share more of the great things happening in Mission and surrounding areas! Stay tuned and contact us today for more information regarding our advertising and sponsorship opportunities.
Happy Spring! Get outside and enjoy all that Mission has to offer!

During these coming summer months it is time to start preparing yourself for UV ray protection! UV rays are just as dangerous for your eyes as they can be for your skin. UV rays contribute to the formation of cataracts and other eye problems leaving your eyes with cloudy or possibly no vision at all.

Hi, my name is Kyle and I’m 23 years old. I have had epilepsy since 1994. I had seizures every month. I wasn’t able to get my driver’s license because of my seizures. I started drinking Dolphin Water from FUEL in Mission. Dolf suggested a few things to clean up my diet and some supplements. My life has changed this past year because I have not had a seizure since I started drinking Dolphin Water and now I have my driver’s license.Thank you Dolf!
My name is Irene and I am from Mission. I was diagnosed with Bladder Cancer just over a year ago. Crushed and at a loss of faith I didn’t know where to turn. The doctor wanted to take out my bladder but that wasn’t the answer for me. I came across a copy of What’s On Magazine and found FUEL Supplements & Vitamins’ testimonials. I went to see Dolf and told him what I was battling. Dolf explained the benefits of his Dolphin Water which I started drinking right away. He also helped me with my nutrition and suggested some supplements. After 2 ½ months I had a cystoscopy check and was completely clear. I am staying with Dolphin Water and never looking back. Thank you Dolf!

Founded in 1985, the goal of the Mission Hospice Society is to provide compassionate care and end of life support to the community. It functions as an independent non-profi t organization that works in partnership with The Fraser Health Authority as a member on the Palliative Care Team in Mission to address the psycho-social needs of dying and terminally ill individuals and their families. This support takes place in many different environments: patients’ homes, residential hospice, long-term care facilities and hospital.
The Hospice Society relies on their many fundraising events throughout the year. Please join them at their gala on April 26 at the Best Western. There will be a customized
menu, dancing and live and a silent auction. Some items in the auction will be 2 tickets to anywhere West Jet fl ies, a trip for 2 to
Vegas and a Mexican or Caribbean cruise for 2. Tickets are $85.
The Mission Hospice Society would also like to invite you to participate in the National Hike for Hospice week. Hospices across the country will be collecting pledges in support of their local hospice societies and walking or running on a designated route. The Hike for Mission Hospice Society will be held on Sunday May 4 at Fraser River Heritage Park, and registration starts at 9am. Hikers will be treated to a BBQ lunch provided by the Mission Elks Club.
To purchase gala tickets or register for the hike please call 604-826-2235.

ToastmastersMembership in Toastmasters is cost effective and is one of the greatest investments you can make in yourself. The environment in a Toastmasters club is friendly and supportive. You’ll laugh and learn while you practice in a friendly environment with people who are there for the same reason you are: to become better communicators.Everyone at a Toastmasters meeting feels welcome and valued, from complete beginners to advanced speakers. In a club meeting, you practice giving prepared speeches as well as brief impromptu presentations. There is no rush and no pressure; the Toastmasters program allows you to progress at your own pace. Constructive evaluation is central to the Toastmasters philosophy. Each time you speak, an evaluator will point out (your)strengths as well as suggest improvements. Receiving and giving such feedback is a great learning experience. In Toastmasters, encouragement and improvement go hand-in-hand. “Not only has being a member of Mission Toastmasters helped me gain confi dence to speak in public, but I’ve also made many new friends. The club is a very welcoming and supportive environment to learn to speak up and be heard in all areas of life.”Member: Catherine Simmons

Chef Kerry’s Award Winning Chili
Sesame Cheddar Cornbread
Here is the recipe for the Mission Chamber of Commerce Chili Cook-Off 2013 - Makes 8 servings.
A wonderful accompaniment to chili! - Makes 8 pieces.
Two FEET & a HEARTBEAT - Do you feel like you’re tied to your phone? Addicted to candy crush & crackbook? Go for walk or lace up your sneakers and go for a run. There are lots of great parks & trails in Mission. I like the trail at Centennial Park (11th & Taulbut), and if you’re looking for something more challenging google “trails in Mission BC” there are lots of options.
Put some WHEELS on - If you like biking, rollerblading and skateboarding there are lots of places in Mission to get rolling! Check out the Fraser Valley Mountain Bikers Association (www.fvmba.com) if you’re into mountain biking or if roller blading is more your thing check out MAC Roller Hockey. If you really want a challenge leave your car at home and ride your bike to work.
When in doubt PADDLE it out - For kayaking, canoeing and stand up paddle boarding, Mission has some awesome local lakes and waterways. I try to get out on the water as much as possible; Stave Lake is my favourite but Rolley, Hayward, Sayers & Hatzic Lake are great local lakes.
Go FISHING - It’s no secret that Mission has some of the world’s best salmon and sturgeon fi shing. It was on my bucket list to “catch a sturgeon” and one of my friends hired a guide to take us out for the day. It was a truly unforgettable day on the water. If you need a theme song for this event I suggest Madonna: Like a Virgin Sturgeon!
TEAMWORK makes dream work - Team sports are great for the community and an awesome way to get outside. Soccer, softball, football and baseball are just a few team sports you can join in Mission. If team sports aren’t really your thing get a group of friends together & go play tennis at Centennial Park or check out the beach volleyball at Griner Park.

Is Your Life Bubble Wrapped?A good friend of mine once told me: “Life begins as soon as you step outside of your comfort zone”. This same sentiment was echoed in Eleanor Roosevelt’s famous instruction to “do one thing every day that scares you.”
To leave your comfort zone and voluntarily do things that scare you may sound risky, but that is exactly what you need to do - take a risk! How is a risk defined? Simply put, it is any activity that presents you with a personal challenge and also has the possibility of failure. Whether it is saying “Hi” to a stranger, trying a Zumba class, or completing an outdoor fitness challenge – risks can benefit your mental and physical health.
Risk taking can bring the following benefits:· Increased dopamine levels (feel-good hormone)· Improved self-esteem· Personal growth· Sense of belonging and trust within a group· Confidence in your capabilities
So take off that bubble wrap and stepoutsideyour comfort zone today!
