The 2019 Carers Victoria Western Programs Calendar is full of great activities and events for carers to attend. The events are for you, the carer, to enjoy some time away from your caring role.

The Victorian Government funds Carers Victoria to cover the cost of these events; however, on occasion, carers may be requested to make a co -contribution.

JOIN US IN 2019Carers Victoria’s Western Programs Calendar of Events is full of great activities and events for carers to attend in 2019. You can find your events by the coding throughout the calendar to easily identify the events you would like to attend.

WESTERN PROGRAM EVENTSThese events are only for carers who are registered with Carers Victoria and live in Melbourne’s western metropolitan area (the local government areas of Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melbourne, Melton, Moonee Valley or Wyndham).

There are a variety of social opportunities for carers to participate in, including:

• Movie of the Month in Werribee, Sunshine, Melton or Yarraville

• Brunch Group in Brimbank or Hobsons Bay

• A walk and talk in Moonee Valley or Wyndham

• Body Balance at Melton Waves, and

• A wide range of education workshops at Carers Victoria, Footscray.

To register for a Western Program event please phone 1800 242 636 and quote the event #number next to the event you would like to attend.

Registrations are open two weeks prior to the event date. A confirmation text message will be sent out two days prior to the event. Most events have a limited capacity.

When registering for the Western Program events please note the following:

• Carers can only attend ONE movie club per month

• You can only register for one carer at a time, and

• You cannot register for more than one event at a time.

EDUCATION SERVICE EVENTSEveryone is welcome to attend the Education Service workshops and educational programs.

■ These events are colour coded in green.

Through our Education Service you will be able to explore the impact of caring on your emotional and physical health and gain practical advice on how to navigate the health and community sector.

To register for a Education Service workshop, please phone 1800 242 636 or register online www.carersvictoria.org.au/events/educationworkshops and quote the event #number next to the event you would like to attend.

RSVP is required at least one week prior to the event date. A confirmation text message will be sent two days prior to the workshop.

NEW INITIATIVES FOR WESTERN PROGRAMWe have some new opportunities available to carers this year. These include:

• A 10 week program “Body Balance” at Melton Waves

• A 10 week program “The Aspiring Writer Workshop” Writing Victoria, and

• An 8 week program “Carers Who Cook” at Victoria University Footscray

(a minimum number of participants must attend for this program to go ahead).

■ These events are colour coded in red.

Participants must attend ALL sessions of the program. Numbers are limited, please phone 1800 242 636 and quote the event #number next to the event you would like to attend.

CARERS AGED 65 AND OVER EVENTSCarers Victoria offers a range of services and supports for carers over the age of 65 years who is caring for someone who is aged, has a disability, mental or chronic illness.

There is a great range of both social and educational opportunities to participate in. These events are ONLY for registered carers aged 65 years and over.

■ These events are colour coded in blue.

To register for a Carers Aged 65 and over event, please phone 1800 242 636 and quote the event #number next to the event you would like to attend.

Places are limited, please RSVP four weeks prior to the event date. A confirmation text message will be sent two days prior to the event.

TAKING A BREAKRESPITE SERVICESThere are times when carers just need a break. The services which enable this break are broadly referred to as ‘respite’ and include in -home help provided by a support worker, recreation-based activities and assistance with special equipment.

Services may also include ‘residential respite’ where the person you care for has a short -term stay at a facility.

We recognise respite provides a much needed break from caring tasks – time to get other things done, to have fun with the family, or simply to relax and recharge your batteries.

Attending social opportunities and educational workshops can provide a break from your caring role. This calendar provides a range of opportunities for carers to take a break.

“ I have extra stuff to do around the house and have to help my brother with autism a lot more. Sometimes it means I can’t do things with my friends. But I have met other young carers through some Carers Victoria activities.”

YOUNG CARERSYoung carers are children and young people aged up to 25 years of age who care for a family member, usually a parent or sibling with a disability, mental illness, chronic condition or terminal illness. Young carers may also look after an older person with care needs.

This can be challenging and often young carers tell us this is just what being a part of their family is like. Many young carers are proud of who they are and what they do, but it can also be hard work, affect their schoolwork, time with friends and make everyday life more difficult.

Carers Victoria can help with getting support, including:

• Handling stress

• Dealing with school

• Talking it over confidentially

• Time out

• Meeting other young carers who understand

• Scholarships

• Helping young carers with their caring role

DISABILITY CARER SUPPORTAs a carer of a person with a disability, you may also benefit from additional supports. We offer assistance and information, with a focus on supports to enable you to take a break. This support is different for every family. The aim of our program is to meet your individual needs.

Through our program we:

• Identify your support needs

• Coordinate opportunities for you to take a break

• Work in partnership with other organisations to develop services sensitive to your needs, and

• Create opportunities for you to talk about the issues that affect you.

CARER SUPPORT GROUPSOften carers find it helpful to talk to their peers − people managing similar situations who can offer practical advice and support. Members help each other in many ways:

• Emotional support − it can be a relief to talk with people who understand the pressures of caring but who are outside your caring role or family circle.

• Practical information, tips and resources − members share information about local services and supports, medical treatments, research, or tips to help make caring easier.

• New friends − many carers find the demands of caring make it difficult to keep in touch with friends and family. A regular carer support group can expand your social circle and help you feel more connected.

NDIS Carers OnlineCarers who are supporting someone to transition to the NDIS now have access to the NDIS Carers Online community. This is hosted in a Facebook group.

Carer Support Group Facilitator NetworkPeer support forms a backbone of the supports available to carers across Victoria. Carers Victoria has launched the Carer Support Group Facilitator Network initiative.

NDIS Carer Advisory ServiceThe NDIS rollout has progressed and more in-depth support can be obtained through the NDIS Carer Advisory Service.

MENTAL HEALTHCaring for someone with a mental illness can be difficult and confusing. The illness may cause them to think, feel or behave in ways which are hard to understand and know how to help. It is important to remember you are not to blame for the illness, nor is the person you care for. It is not something to be ashamed of.

Our Mental Health team operates in Melbourne’s western metropolitan area, providing expert local advice, support in times of crisis and the tools you need to plan for the future.

We help you link with additional local services and supports which understand what you are going through and can help make your caring role easier.

We offer a range of counselling supports, including group counselling focussing on various themes like grief and loss, as well as family, couples and individual counselling.

Counselling can be arranged face to face at the Carers Victoria office in Footscray, over the telephone, via video or face to face somewhere near you.
