THE LBT PEOPLETOM BLAKEMORE, Technical and Premises Manager

TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE AT THE LBT I oversee the technical aspects of all in-house and visiting shows here at the theatre. From making sure sets will actually fit in the building to advising how the most modern and technically demanding shows can be realised in our space. As Premises Manager I am also responsible for the day to day running and upkeep of our beautiful 200-year-old building.

WHAT'S THE MOST INTERESTING SHOW YOU'VE WORKED ON AT THE LBT? My favourite shows to work on are always the ones that stretch our building and technical capacity to the limit, in a good way. Installing an eight metre ‘Wheel of Death’ on our main stage for Race Horse Company’s Super Sunday last year was certainly fun, and having a go in it was even better!

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN THE NEW SEASON? The variety of our programme means we get to work with a lot of different styles of performance and technical requirements, which always keeps things interesting. Motionhouse’s charge and Unlimited’s future bodies look like they will incorporate a lot of innovative technology to immerse our audiences. Our in-house pantomime is also always good fun to work on. I look forward to gifting our Aladdin’s carpet the magical power of flight.

We are delighted to welcome back some of the country’s biggest touring companies – Northern Broadsides return with Dario Fo’s political farce they don’t pay? we won’t pay! (p7) and English Touring Theatre complete our three year partnership with their contemporary production of othello (p5). There’s also spectacular dance from Motionhouse – performing their electrifying piece charge (p12) and Phoenix Dance present the hugely popular Windrush: Movement of the People as part of their 2018 mixed programme (p13).

Following on from the success of our first ever A Festival we have three new performances which explore our personal

and social challenges (p10-11). On the main stage there is cutting edge live and digital performance by Unlimited in their show future bodies (p6), which investigates extraordinary body enhancement technologies at the edge of scientific discovery.

As we approach the festive season we travel the world of magic and imagination in our third lbt pantomime, aladdin (p8-9), promising more laughs, music and sparkle to share with all the family.

We hope you will find all your favourites and some surprises inside and we look forward to seeing you this autumn.

OPERA NORTH AN ENGLISH TOURING THEATRE, OXFORD PLAYHOUSE AND SHAKESPEARE AT THE TOBACCO FACTORY PRODUCTION

othello is one of Shakespeare's most startlingly contemporary plays – a masterful depiction of a life torn apart by prejudice.

The strain of fitting into a society driven by discrimination and fear soon take their toll. Manipulated by Iago, Othello's life quickly unravels as he turns on everything he holds dear.

Following a critically acclaimed tour, Richard Twyman’s vital production of othello is brought to the stage by uk Theatre Award winners English Touring Theatre (French Without Tears, The Weir).

The technology of the future is being developed, in part, by very intelligent and/or very well-funded people who believe that death is just a technical glitch and immortality is genuinely possible.

Two of the uk’s most thoughtful, inspiring and brilliant theatre companies come together to imagine the implications of real world, leading edge developments in human enhancement technologies.

Working with leading scientists and researchers in the fields of brain implants, smart drugs, and artificial intelligence, Unlimited and RashDash smash together science fact and fiction in a kaleidoscopic montage of words, music and movement.

The human being is being upgraded. This is terrifying and exciting and it’s coming – whether we like it or not.MAIN STAGE 8.00pm  TICKETS £16–£12 WITH A POST-SHOW DISCUSSION FUNDRAISING EVENT IN AID OF KIRKLEES THEATRE TRUST

Earlier this year we created A Festival – two weeks of artist workshops, creative events and live performances looking at the wellbeing of individuals and society. We were delighted by the response and the appetite for art that speaks to ideas and issues that matter in our communities.

This autumn I wanted to continue showcasing artists who are making work about personal challenges and social concerns.

All the pieces are fresh and energetic and I hope you will enjoy the buzz of seeing new work and meeting new artists at LBT.

This is a show about belonging. About tribes and families. About the place you belong because you were born there; the places that are in your blood but also the places you adopt; that you pretend are your home and the places you change yourself to try and belong in.

It’s about class mobility. And regional identity. And being a Thatcher’s child. It’s about education and 'making good’ for yourself. And maybe about how that can leave you exiled from the place you started. With nowhere to quite belong.

It’s about always being an imposter and trying to remember how to speak in your own voice.

The Class Project is a Theatre in the Mill commission, produced by Arch 468, funded by Arts Council England and supported by arc Stockton, Derby Theatre, The Bike Shed and the Old Vic and by China Plate, mac Birmingham, Warwick Arts Centre and In Good Company through the First Bite Festival.

HUDDERSFIELD THESPIANS

From the country's favourite playwright comes the country's favourite play.

An unruly bunch of bright, sixth-form boys in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university are being taught by a maverick English teacher at odds with the young supply teacher and a headmaster obsessed with results.

Huddersfield Thespians (A Streetcar Named Desire, Murder, Margaret & Me, Offices & Gentlemen) return with Alan Bennett's classic play. Full of staff room rivalry and the anarchy of adolescence, the history boys provokes questions about history, education and their purpose.

'If this were played upon a stage now, I could condemn it as an improbable fiction' – Twelfth Night, Act III, Scene 4

Six aspiring authors meet to discuss their work. The chairman, Arnold, attempts to persuade the group to collaborate, an idea that is quickly dismissed. As Arnold is clearing up after the meeting there is a clap of thunder, a black-out – and the story that would have resulted from the collaboration takes place before his very eyes.

Performing on the main stage for the first time, Dick & Lottie (Arrivals & Departures, Bedroom Farce) present this sharp and zany Ayckbourn comedy.

TUE 22 – SAT 26 JANUARY

TUE 6 – SAT 10 NOVEMBER

HUDDERSFIELD THESPIANS DICK & LOTTIEHUDDERSFIELD MUSICAL THEATRE COMPANY HUDDERSFIELD LIGHT OPERA COMPANYSAT 12 – SAT 19 JANUARY

Mrs Horrocks's class is about to perform their first nativity play at Flint Street Junior School for all their proud mums and dads... and the occasional social worker.

Squabbles arise when Gabriel wants to play Mary, the Star grumbles that he is not a proper star like they have at nasa, Herod won't stop waving at his mum and dad and the subversive innkeeper is determined to liven up the traditional script!

From the writer of Calendar Girls and hit musical The Band comes a wonderfully festive black comedy that reminds us all of how it felt to be a happy little 8-year-old.

To celebrate their 15th anniversary, Dick & Lottie present Ayckbourn's classic ‘Damsels in Distress’ trilogy, beginning with gameplan.

Teenage Sorrel fights to keep herself and her abandoned mother, once a dot.com businesswoman, financially afloat by setting up as a part-time hooker, advertising for clients on the internet and persuading her tearful school chum to act as her maid. Just when you wonder what will happen in this terrible situation the play becomes a comedy about body disposal, police questioning and media intrusion.

Join Dick & Lottie later in the year as they complete this trilogy with FlatSpin and RolePlay.

Can good triumph over evil when they are both trapped in the same body?

Based on the short story by Robert Louis Stevenson, jekyll & hyde the musical is a classical, gothic, musical thriller.

A gripping tale of a brilliant mind gone awry; a mind that wreaks murderous havoc on the city of London.

jekyll & hyde the musical promises to be another quality production from the Huddersfield Musical Theatre Company, following previous artistic successes including Hairspray and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Huddersfield Light Opera Company are back to put an end to the post-Christmas blues with their usual fun-packed traditional family pantomime.

SUPPORT US

1818

The Lawrence Batley Theatre is the home of live performance for Huddersfield and Kirklees. For almost 20 years, community groups and other supporters campaigned for a professional theatre in Huddersfield and their efforts brought about the opening of the lbt in 1994. Our accessible, high quality, diverse and socially relevant programme incorporates all artforms; and our work in the community celebrates and challenges people’s creativity and interests, irrespective of their background or circumstance. We continue to honour the story of a theatre demanded by the people of Kirklees who had the vision to know what a difference art makes.

Please help us to continue to make this happen. Buying tickets for some of the fantastic events showcased in this brochure or telling your friends about us are just some of the ways you can support the lbt, but there are many other ways to make a huge difference to us too!

RALPH MCTELLHUDDERSFIELD JAZZ MUGENKYO TAIKO DRUMMERS HUDDERSFIELD CONTEMPORARY MUSIC FESTIVAL

Huddersfield Jazz mark 30 years of bringing top quality jazz to Huddersfield with a concert featuring Claire Martin, Ray Gelato and the Dave Newton Trio.

Claire, seven times British Jazz Awards winner and former bbc Radio 3 presenter, is among the top jazz vocalists on the planet, according to Jazz Times.

Ray Gelato, ‘the Godfather of swing’, is a jazz, swing and jump blues saxophonist, singer and bandleader.

Their show, A Swinging Affair, celebrates their album, We’ve Got a World That Swings, and is not to be missed.

This autumn, the uk’s original touring taiko tribe returns to the road with a brand new show of skill, stamina and red-hot rhythms to stir your soul.

As Mugenkyo approach their 25th year as Europe’s longest established taiko organisation, they celebrate the growth of their tribe of performers from across the globe, with the latest captivating performance of sharp synchronisation, mysterious masked choreography and sumptuous soundscapes, all wrapped up in a breath-taking display of high energy and powerful rhythms on huge taiko drums.

After enjoying a succession of sold-out concerts throughout 2017, Roger Davies & His Band invite you to celebrate with them as they perform live on the main stage for the first time at this very special show.

Roger Davies has established himself as one of today's most engaging songwriters through five solo albums and performances around the uk.

Accompanied on stage by his dynamic band, audiences can enjoy new arrangements of his signature songs including Huddersfield Town, Into the Sun, Brighouse On Saturday Night and Wear Your Poppy with Pride, plus lots of brand new material.

One of the great storytellers, Ralph McTell, is now celebrating more than 50 years on the road.

Known for his virtuoso guitar style, he is primarily a prolific and gifted songwriter. With a style that invites you into a unique world, he weaves a narrative that is both significant and poignant.

Ralph made his debut in 1968 with the album Eight Frames a Second and in 1974 the release of Streets of London earned him an Ivor Novello Award. In 2002 he was presented with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the bbc Radio 2 Folk Awards.

HUDDERSFIELD CONTEMPORARY MUSIC FESTIVALFRI 16 – SUN 25 NOVEMBER

Full programme available soon at hcmf.co.uk

harriet is a new music-theatre piece depicting the life and impact of 18th century abolitionist Harriet Tubman, who escaped her life as a slave and devoted herself to saving others through the Underground Railroad – a system of safe routes used to break out slaves and help them reach the free states.

Composed and conceived by internationally celebrated composer Hilda Paredes, this ambitious narrative details Tubman’s journey from captivity into activism, considering both the suffering she endured and the spiritual experiences that spurred her on.

Presented as a monodrama and scored for voice, violin, guitar, percussion and electronics, the opera is typical of Paredes’ ability to create deeply intense work out of something meticulous and refined.MAIN STAGE 7.00pm TICKETS £18 / concessions £15

Co-produced by Muziektheater Transparant and hcmf//, funded by Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes, Mexico (FONCA) and The Composers’ Fund, a PRS for Music Foundation initiative in association with Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

DALISO CHAPONDA: WHAT THE AFRICAN SAID

DANE BAPTISTE: G.O.D (GOLD. OIL. DRUGS)

After a sell-out tour in spring 2018, Daliso Chaponda offers another chance to see his hit stand up tour what the african said.

Daliso Chaponda has lived in countries where the press is not allowed to criticise the government, and in others with no libel laws where they can say anything. He has been both a journalist and a jaded newsreader. He is the perfect comedian to discuss what the media has become, which he does in his hilarious new show about recent news, old news, fake news, and stories that were almost news.

Fresh from hosting Live at the Apollo and another total sell out run at the Edinburgh Fringe, Dane Baptiste brings his third smash hit show on national tour.

Original, provocative and exceptionally crafted, g.o.d. (Gold. Oil. Drugs) explores our worldwide pursuit of wealth, power and pleasure.

The ‘Outright king of live comedy’ (The Times) Jason Byrne is on the road again for more comedy chaos.

Strap in as Jason takes you on a trip of mad routines alongside some proper bonkers stunts.

As seen on Live at the Apollo, The Royal Variety Show, Don’t Say It Bring It, Wild Things and recently seen judging Ireland’s Got Talent.

In a world where rainy days and Mondays collide, one man’s solitary journey to find himself has only just begun…

The piano player from Frisky & Mannish plays the piano player from The Carpenters in a razor-sharp parody play about a life spent playing the piano.

disclaimer: This award-winning Fringe hit show is not endorsed by the real Richard Carpenter.

THREE LITTLE PIG TAILS LITTLE STARMYTHS OF THE VIKINGS 'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMASSAT 29 SEPTEMBER SAT 17 NOVEMBERFRI 2 NOVEMBER

SAT 22 DECEMBER

GARLIC THEATRE MOON ON A STICK PRODUCTIONSCLYDEBUILT PUPPET THEATRE FRONT ROOM PRODUCTIONS

A brand new version of the classic story of the three little pigs set in Paris.

A grumpy old wolf is a chef who wants some pigs' tails for his soup. Will the little pigs outwit the wolf and what kind of house will they build?

A funny, warm-hearted and interactive rustic tale to make you squeal with laughter, bristling with puppets, live music and lots of joining in.

Garlic Theatre (Jack and the Beans Talk, Little Red Robin Hood) entertain the whole family with beautifully crafted puppets, music and a garlicky French twist to the tale.

A star lit show for babies.

Join Little Star as she swings from shooting stars, slides down crescent moons and bounces on fluffy clouds.

Based on the song 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star', little star takes us on a journey with the star herself. Not content with the same spot in the sky, she wants to see, hear and touch everything!

Moon on a Stick (The Abominable Snowman, Jack Frost) use puppetry, music and captivating visuals to delight young audiences in an intimate, relaxed setting, making this the perfect first theatre experience.

Battle ‘Frost Giants’, dodge magical beasts and feel the thrill of storytelling, just as the children of the Norse once did.

Through hand-carved puppets, witness the stories of Odin, the King of the Gods; Thor and his mighty hammer, and Loki – the shape changer, adventurer and mischief maker.

This half term the world of the Vikings is brought to life in this original show for children from Clydebuilt Puppet Theatre (Dinosaur Detectives).

It is Christmas Eve and Santa’s elves, Holly and Ivy, are calling for help from all children to make sure they have completed their checklist, so that everything is ready for Santa and for Christmas.

With heavy sacks of presents, poorly reindeer, and one too many mince pies, will Santa have enough time to make it around all the houses in time for Christmas day?

Front Room Productions present ‘twas the night before christmas, with music, poetry and a whole lot of festive fun for all the family.

Five interweaving stories, five small worlds, five very different journeys.

Step inside the small world of Mimika Theatre’s white tent and into an exquisite intimate environment. Meet five characters – a bug, a goose, a fox cub, a cat and a six-year-old girl – and watch their wordless stories unfold.

small worlds is an unforgettable piece of visual theatre inside a magical canvas dome – a unique integration of puppetry, miniature landscapes, original animated film and music.
