Growing Jamestown
Grants from the Fund for the Region to the Jamestown Renaissance Corporation has allowed JRC to engage, inspire and lead city residents and officials into making Jamestown more beautiful. According to Mary Maxwell, JRC neighborhood project associate, the Healthy Neighborhood initiative has created several programs designed to strengthen local neighborhoods by increasing owner confidence through collaborations, interactions and beautification, and to inspire others to reinvest. Those programs include Hands on Jamestown, Community Gardens, Jamestown Historic Districts, Renaissance Block Challenge and, new in 2019, Paint Jamestown. In 2019, the Renaissance Block Challenge and Paint Jamestown will focus on properties in the Allen Park/UPMC Chautauqua neighborhoods on the city’s south side. Like previous years, homeowners performing exterior renovations can apply for matching funds and support from local experts, such as contractors and landscapers. Paint Jamestown offers 10 homeowners in this area grants to paint the outside of their property in one of 50 historic color schemes. Since 2011, the Renaissance Block Challenge has engaged 450 homeowners and landlords and invested more than $1 million to property owners through personal investments and small matching grants.
