Our MissionPartnering with families and child development professionals to raise happy, confident children. Where Did We Get Our Name?We get this question a lot and the answer has three parts. Our founding mothers chose the name BANANAS, first, because their children were eating lots of bananas. Secondly, they sometimes felt that they were going “bananas” with the 24/7 challenges of parenthood. And thirdly, they wanted a name that was child-friendly, memorable, and in no way bureaucratic. As an interesting trivia fact, we began as a parent-led playgroup and our original name was “BANANAS: A Place to Find Playmates.” ParkingDuring business hours, the parking lot behind the building is for staff only. When attending evening or weekend events, you may use the parking lot. Daytime parking is available on the street. Be sure to read signs regarding street-sweeping days.

Workshops Choosing Infant CareWe know that choosing the right child care fit for your baby can be a difficult decision. There are a lot of things to consider, such as the cost, hours, and type of child care that is best for your family. You may have questions about the differences between a family child care, a center, or other available options. With so many types of care to choose from, many parents aren’t even sure where to start. At this workshop, we’ll discuss each type so you can connect with the right provider.

Each plan is uniquely tailored to meet your needs and offers an opportunity to connect with a care provider who’s the right fit. Our counselors will spend the time to get to know you and be creative in finding all possible options, providing guidance with suggestions and tips on how to find the best caregiver.

If you’re excited, worried, overwhelmed, and overjoyed, then you’re totally normal. Finding a circle of support is a great way to lessen the stress of caring for a newborn. At each of our support groups, moms will get to share their feelings, ask questions, and build friendships with one another. Alexis Azzam, a mom and licensed marriage and family therapist, will offer lots of information along with tips for decreasing isolation and bonding with your infant.

Fathering From Within (4-Part Series)This is a series designed to empower fathers from the inside out. Offering personal tools that help to define or redefine one’s sense of identity and purpose and establish guiding principles for fatherhood, this series will help you to navigate relationships and social norms that may hinder effective parenting. Fathers will learn that everything we need to know about being a great dad is, and always has been, inside us. All we have to do is find it and share it with our children in order for their futures to be bright and promising. Parent Education SeriesSpirited Child (6-Part Series)Are you the parent of a child who is strong-minded and has intense feelings? Or a child who may have endless energy, gets easily frustrated, or is very shy? Would you like to learn parenting tools that work with your child’s personality and stage of development? Rebecah Freeling is a former center director who has 20 years of experience in early childhood education. She will share ways to deal with tantrums, aggression, shyness, and other challenging behaviors often displayed by “spirited” children.

Tue, Sep 19 & 26 | 7 pm - 9 pmTue, Oct 3, 10, 17, & 24 | 7 pm - 9 pmInstructor: Rebecah FreelingLocation: Berkeley Room

Booties Camp: Baby Massage (1st in a Series)This series is based on the idea of a parenting “boot camp” that will give you the skills, confidence and connections to raise a healthy, happy infant. You don’t have to attend all the workshops; just choose the ones that are a good fit for your family.

This workshop is all about relaxation, bonding, and the power of touch. The benefits of baby massage are amazing. When you massage your infant you can reduce crying, increase sleep, improve blood circulation and digestion, balance breathing, inspire relaxation and better self-esteem, and create a loving parent-child bond. In this hands-on workshop, you will learn simple massage techniques that your baby will love.

Wed, Oct 4 | 10 am - 12 pmInstructor: Annette SerwangaLocation: Berkeley Room

Booties Camp: Baby Yoga (2nd in a Series)Yoga is a great way to regain shape, strength, and energy after giving birth. It’s also a great way to learn about breath and body awareness. This workshop includes exercises for breathing and getting centered. We’ll also learn poses with and without baby, songs for bonding with baby, and calming exercises for you and baby. Taught by Elika Aird, a certified yoga instructor and doula, the class is designed for mothers and their pre-crawling babies, but babies of all ages are welcome.

Wed, Oct 11 | 10 am - 12 pmInstructor: Elika AirdLocation: Berkeley Room

Booties Camp: Baby Language & Brain Development (3rd in a Series)By only eight months old, babies already have a trillion brain synapses that need to be stimulated for healthy development. Parents can support this development though touching, singing, reading, talking, and creating safe and loving relationships. This workshop covers the basics of brain development, baby and adult language, understanding verbal cues, practical tips for language development, and more. Taught by Madeline Meyer-Riley, MFT, this class is sure to have you talking and thinking!

Wed, Oct 18 | 10 am - 12 pmInstructor: Madeline Meyer-Riley, MFTLocation: Berkeley Room

Booties Camp: Baby Sleep (4th in a Series)Sleep can often feel like the number one lost activity for new parents when the baby arrives. You may be up all night soothing a crying infant, exhausted from keeping up with your little one throughout the day, or just tired from trying to juggle life’s many tasks. At this workshop we will talk about sleep patterns, locations, naps, night feedings, co-sleeping, healthy training, and much more! Bring your questions and come learn about what’s going on with your newborn.

Wed, Oct 25 | 10 am - 12 pmInstructor: Colleen ShiplerLocation: Berkeley Room

Resolving Sibling Rivalry (3-Part Series)If the thought of siblings brings to mind words like “conflict,” “competition,” or “jealousy,” this training will offer helpful solutions for working through family challenges. Facilitated by Rebecah Freeling, this workshop will show you how you can support strong sibling relationships built on cooperation, collaboration, sharing, and mutual understanding. It’s important that family members know they can trust and rely on one another and for siblings, it’s especially important to work toward a relationship that will only become stronger over time. No matter what ages your children are, they can learn to communicate with each other in a way that brings them closer together.

Our HistoryAs women began to enter the workforce during the early 1970s in increasing numbers, the need for child care became a common and widely acknowledged dilemma. We evolved from a place for children and mothers to socialize and play to a critical network of information and resources that enabled parents to work without compromising their child’s welfare.

BANANAS was founded in 1973 by a group of volunteer moms who believed that everyone should have access to affordable child care, regardless of income. The mothers had a vision of a grassroots organization that would be based on the premise that parents are the best experts when it comes to their children. The organization would be rooted in the idea that families are able and capable of making the best decisions on their own when given supportive, non-judgmental information.

Help Support UsWe pride ourselves in the efforts that we have made to make our programs and services available to the entire community.

To ensure that parents and child care providers all have the same opportunity to participate, 99.9% of our services are provided at no cost. Parent education, playgroups, child care provider professional development, and child care referrals are available to anyone and everyone.

In order to maintain our current levels of service, BANANAS needs to raise funds. Please join us in supporting parents and child care providers in taking care of our most precious assets, our children, by making a donation today!
