One early morning in Capernaum, the disciples, after

looking everywhere for Jesus finally found Him and

exclaimed, “Everyone is looking for you!” Why? The

night before, the “whole town” had brought the sick and

demon-possessed to Him to be healed. And many more

needed Him the next day.

But Jesus’ reply was very interesting: “Let us go

somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can

preach there also. That is why I have come.” (Mark 1:38,

NIV, italics added)

So why would Jesus want to go somewhere else when

there was so much need and opportunity right where

He was? In His own words, because “that is why I have

come.” Jesus came to fulfill the words of Isa. 49:6, to be

a light to the nations and to bring God’s salvation to the

ends of the earth. If He spent all His time in one area,

people in other areas would not have the opportunity

to be saved.

The same is true of His church today. We are not spread

evenly over the world. We are bunched together. Over

one-third of the world, 2.7 billion people, still live in areas

where there is no viable, witnessing church. As much

need and opportunity as there may be in areas where

the church exists (like our own country), if we continue

to simply stay where we are, the dark third of the world

will continue to stay dark. And the mission of our Savior

will not be fulfilled.

So some of us need to go somewhere else. And the

rest of us need to help send them. This is what we’ll be

learning about and challenged by at REACH|14. George

Chavanikamannil, the founder of our ministry partner in

India (Good News for India) will be sharing with us the

needs and opportunities in another part of the world,

a somewhere else that is really something else! We will

also hear about our other global partnerships and get

to meet a dozen or so of our own missionaries to learn

about what they are doing somewhere else to advance

the Gospel.

ARE YOU ONE WHO SHOULD GO? At REACH|14, we will be introducing the 2015 Vision

Trips for you to consider and pray about. Or should

you send? You can do that by praying, encouraging,

or giving. Whatever role God has designed for you, we

want to help you find it at REACH|14, so that whether

you go or send, your life will make a difference for all

eternity somewhere else.

Recently Pastor Nate Irwin received a report from Wycliffe

Bible Translators outlining the progress of the Cloud

Mountain project made possible by your generous gifts

to the 2013 Christmas Offering. The goal of the offering

was to “give the gospel” through the means of Bible

translation in a remote region of east Asia.

By God’s grace, the 2013 Christmas Offering was $1.1

million and was gratefully received by Wycliffe Bible

Translators, who are leading the translation efforts.

Here are a few status updates from the field:

In the East Hillside region, the team is nearly completed

with rough drafts of a biblical story set and is drafting

the Gospel of Luke. The team continues to see success in

literacy training through the use of a mobile library.

In the Alpine Meadow region, a trial recording of Jonah

and a “Creation to Christ” gospel presentation has

been completed. A translated of Matthew 5-8 has been

approved.

In the Low Ridge region, a translation of Revelation

and Hebrews was completed, and one team member’s

parents became believers.

In the Summit region, the team held a “How to Share the

Gospel” meeting and saw several people come to faith.

In the Plateau region, a usable alphabet and oral story of

Jonah is being created.

Please continue to pray for these projects, for the

translation teams, and for favor from local authorities.

Some folks love ‘em.

Me? I’ve never had french fried spiders, and never

expect to. And I’ve traveled extensively overseas.

(The fact is that most of the strange foods I’ve choked

down have been right here in the USA –– can you say

raw lamb meatloaf?)

So what? So much for your excuse that to go on

a Vision Trip, you’d have to give up eating for the

duration of your time away for lack of palatable food.

The truth is God lives in places other than the USA.

He dwells among people that eat stuff that we may

consider odd.

He’s loving, working, and saving.

He also said in His Word, “Go!” Have you “Gone?” If

not, “Why not?”

You won’t starve. You’ll meet people and grow as God

stretches you.

You’ll encounter new experiences and places. You’ll

make new friends.

Kids want to grow. They measure their height against

those wall-rulers weekly if not daily. They go for

grownup clothes, grownup books, grownup seats in

the car. And, when they’re old enough, we let them

play with sparklers on the Fourth of July – their eyes

light up, their mouths shape an ooh – but eventually

they tire of those and want to set off the bigger,

brighter, boomier stuff. They’re no longer satisfied

with small flickers. They want more.

Part of the reason we’ve created IGNITE is because

we want College Park Church to be a place where

we are continually growing into a mature, passionate

group of worshipers of the one true God. Whenever

we see God’s people worshiping in the Bible – as in

Nehemiah 8, Isaiah 6, Hebrews 12, and Revelation 7 –

we get a glimpse of the power of authentic worship.

Authentic worship is focused: God is the biggest

and brightest being in the room, and people pay

attention. Authentic worship is passionate: people

fall on their faces, lift their hands, shout and sing.

Authentic worship is contagious: people want to

know the reason why God’s children passionately

invest themselves in proclaiming His greatness and

love.

We want IGNITE|14 to be a catalyst for sparking an

even greater passion to see God’s glory spread in our

church, our city, and our world. The same God whose

presence makes mountains shake like Jell-O; the

God whose face is so holy that even Moses couldn’t

see it and live; the God who sees the spark of each

synapse in your brain and at the same time feels the

warmth of stars burning across the far end of the

universe; that God gave his own Son so he could join

us when we worship. That God is there while we sing

or chat with our neighbor, pray or check ESPN on our

phones, acknowledge him or think about where we’ll

eat lunch.

He’s. Right. There.

What would happen if we could see God like the

angels and the saints in glory flocked around his

throne? Would we cover our faces or fall on our knees

or shout with wonder and gratitude? Probably all of

the above! We would certainly invest ourselves in

worshiping him like he deserves with all the passion

we have to give. We would trade the sparklers for the

biggest rockets we could find!

IGNITE|14 is an invitation to worship with a true vision

of God’s holiness, hugeness and love. To join other

College Parkers in asking God to simultaneously grow

our passion in worship alongside our theology, our

giving, and our serving. He’s. Right. There.

College Park is a wealthy church. Even with less than a

dime in the bank, we would be a wealthy church. Our

fortunes are visible to anyone touring our nurseries

and education spaces especially on Sunday mornings

and Wednesday nights.

“Behold, children are a gift from the Lord, the fruit

of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a

warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the

man who fills his quiver with them!” (Ps. 127:3-5).

And blessed is the church with cribs and classrooms

bulging with more than 1,000 such ”rewards” from

infants to senior high.

Surrounding these riches, are faithful parents and a

dedicated team of 500 volunteers and staff who are

investing their time, energy and hearts as stewards of

these precious gifts. Even though there is still room

for more to serve, we are praising God for providing

us with so many gifted and dedicated servants to

support the various programs and activities for

children and youth.

However, ministry for the children and youth at

College Park is not defined by the various programs

and activities that we offer but by the vision we

have for their lives. The activities and events exists to

support and move us toward that vision.

In the familiar parable of the talents, two of the three

servants were faithful and commended with these

words “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have

been faithful over a little; I will set you over much.

Enter into the joy of your master.” (Matt. 25:23) The

unfaithful servant was condemned and cast “into the

outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping

and gnashing of teeth.” (Matt. 25:30)

Every child at College Park Church will one day stand

before Jesus and give an account for their lives. One

way to express our vision for the next generation is

that on that day our children will look into the smiling

face our Savior and hear him say “well done good and

faithful servant” and that they will enter into the joy

of their master.

As we enter this next season of ministry and engage

in the various activities and programs for children and

youth this ultimate joy is our aim. Joy for them and

joy for all of us who have been called to be faithful

stewards of the “rewards” that have been entrusted

to us. May God unite us in this vision and exceed our

hope for the joy of the next generation.

MEET DAN WELLER

Dan Weller started in June as Pastoral Resident for

Local Outreach. Dan serves alongside Pastor Dale

Shaw and Dustin Crowe to lead the Local Outreach

Council, coordinate SERVE, and serve with our local

partners. Dan also serves on an Elder task force to

clarify our membership process. Dan and his wife

Emily hail from Minneapolis, MN where they both

served on staff of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

MEET ERIC SWANSON

Eric Swanson started in August as Pastoral Resident

for Soul Care. Eric hails from Michigan (a proud MSU

grad) and Louisville, KY, where he completed his M.Div

degree at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and

was actively involved at Sojourn Church. Eric got

married in June to his wife, Jessica. Eric will serve on

our biblical counseling team and work with Pastor

Andrew Rogers to develop counseling training.

What is the pastoral residency program? For three years, College Park has had and benefited greatly from a Pastoral

Residency program. The residency is designed to give younger men with aspirations for pastoral ministry a two-year

term of hands-on ministry experience, preaching exposure, leadership opportunities, and special projects related to

theology, discipleship, or church polity. For instance, the August 2013 College Park Institute Forum on Human Sexuality

was an outgrowth of the residents’ work with our Elders to articulate a biblical view of sexuality and navigate the related

cultural issues.

Finally, please pray for great fruitfulness for the first resident we “launched” to full-time ministry outside our walls:

Jeff Ballard and his family moved to Ithaca, NY in July where Jeff ministers with the students and community of

Cornell University.
