A Year in Music
MusicJohnny Cash and Bob Dylan record together in Nashville, Tennessee. Dylan appears on
the Johnny Cash’s new show to raucous applause and does a
memorable duet with Mr. Cash for the song “Girl from North
Country.”
Soon thereafter, Dylan releases arguably his greatest album,
Nashville Skyline. The album is a hit amongst country fans, but throws some of his supports in a tizzy because of his mellowed
voice.
THE BEATLES!John spends his honeymoon
with Yoko Ono as a “bed-in” in the Amsterdam Hilton to “give
peace a chance.” He also writes and records “Give Peace
a Chance” as his solo career begins to rocket.
Paul marries Linda Eastman.
George and Pattie are arrested for hashish possession.
Ringo is busy being Ringo… but he also convinces the group to hire Allen Klein as the group’s
new business manager.
Led Zeppelin Having only formed a few months
earlier, the first official album, aptly titled Led Zeppelin is
released in January.
The album is credited as one of the most pivotal pieces in recent music history especially for its influence over the creation and
success of heavy metal.
The album sold 7 million copies within a five-year span.
This same year, the band managed to release a second
studio album also aptly titled Led Zeppelin II
Woodstock!“An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of
Peace & Music”
Max Yasgur’s dairy farm in Bethel, New York was the site.
Regarded as the greatest moment in popular music history.
CCR was the first band to be inked for 10,000 dollars.
The fence to secure monetary compensation from the concert goers was cut the night before
because the Bethel authorities did not want to injure what they
estimated to be 50,000 people being in attendance.
Woodstock! (cont.)
Well, the event drew not 50,000 but 500,000 people!
Performers included Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Santana, Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Sly & the
Family Stone, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Joe Cocker, The Band, CSNY, Jimi Hendrix, and Johnny
Winter.
Dylan, who actually LIVED in Woodstock at the time, declined an invitation and actually set sail
for England to perform in the Island of Wight festival.
Jimi HendrixUnfortunately, by the end of this year, the Jimi Hendrix
Experience had broken up when Noel Redding decided to leave.
However, Jimi played in front of a wide variety of crowds that
year… large ones at Woodstock, televised audiences in Britain at the BBC… and small groups in a Toronto police department after
he was apprehended on narcotics charges.
He would be dead the following year.
So… what year was it?
