Description

• In 1947, the introduction of hexagonal cells for mobile base stations was invented by Bell Labs at AT&T.

• Cellular devices are popular devices in our society. There are many pros and cons associated with them.

• Most of the first cell phones created were much larger than the modern cell phones today.

• With the cell phones being so large they were not able to be carried in jacket pockets so they were first installed as car telephones.

Miniaturization

•Trend in technology toward smaller scales for first mechanical, then optical and most recently electronic devices.

•This process allowed phone companies to produce smaller, hand-held mobile phones.

How Cell Phones Work

• Cell phone usage differs from provider to provider and nation to nation.

• All communicate through radio waves with a cell site base station.

• Phones have a transreceiver that transmits voice and data to the nearest site. This is usually 5 to 8 miles away.

• If the phone is not close to its specific cell site, it will adjust to the cell site most near the area.

• Cell sites have relatively low-power radio transmitters which broadcast their presence and relay communications between the mobile handsets and the switch .

How Cell Phones Work Cont.

• The dialogue between the handset and the cell site is a stream of digital data.

• The technology that achieves this depends on the system which the mobile phone operator has adopted.

• A few examples of this include AMPS, GSM, and UMTS. These are very important in the cellular technology world.
