What We Offer Welcome to St James Dental Practice. We are proud to be a specialist provider of orthodontic treatment to the NHS, and endeavour to offer an outstanding level of care to patients. Treatment NHS orthodontic treatment usually involves the wearing of fixed metal braces on the outside surfaces of the teeth. Other types of braces used include removable plastic braces fixed to the teeth with metal clips. Traditional Braces Traditional braces deliver high quality and reliable results. Functional Braces Also know as twin blocks, these are used to improve the profile of the face and correct the bite. Prior to your treatment, if you have very crowded teeth, we may refer you back to your dentist to remove teeth to make space for us to straighten your smile. However, this is always avoided whenever possible. Treatment times are typically 12-24 months. Following treatment, retainers are worn to hold the teeth in their new position. NHS patients are only seen on referral. Dentists refer patients to the Central Referral Centre who then send referrals to us. All patients under the age of 18 are offered an initial examination under the NHS. We will contact you to arrange an appointment after we have received a referral from your dentist. The NHS has strict guidelines on the availability of ortho- dontic treatment. We are commissioned by the NHS to treat patients under the age of 18 with a certain severi- ty of orthodontic need. The level of severity is judged by an “Index of Treatment Need” (IOTN), with a score of 3.6 or higher necessary to be eligible for free NHS treat- ment. Some children will not qualify for NHS treatment. If this is the case, we will explain the options for private treat- ment. Treatment Costs Although NHS orthodontic treatment is free to qualify- ing patients under 18, charges may be made for replacement of lost or damaged braces or retainers. Information on private treatment is available on our website: www.stjamesdental.co.uk. We also have leaflets available in the Practice which you may take away with you. We ask that you are punctual for your appointments and follow advice carefully as to how to look after you braces and keep your teeth and gums healthy. The practice is not responsible for any damage caused to the teeth by the unsupervised wear of braces. Repeated failure to attend appointments, excessive damage caused to appliances, or failure to maintain an adequate standard of oral hygiene may result in us having to stop treatment. All patients attending St James Dental Practice have the right to be treated with respect and dignity. The Practice staff have equal rights. Violent or verbally abusive patients and accompanying persons will not be tolerated and will result in immediate cessation of treatment for the patient. If you are unable to keep your appointment please let us know as soon as possible so that we can give the appointment to someone else. As well as wasting NHS time, missed appointments will lengthen your treat- ment, increasing your risk of tooth decay. We take patient confidentiality extremely seriously and comply with the Data Protection Act. Your dental records will remain confidential and secure. However, from time to time we may need to release your records to NHS England or the NHS Business Services Authority as part of our ongoing clinical review process. We will contact you before releasing your dental records to another organisation. Please ask at reception if you wish to access your dental records. We take great pride in the orthodontic treatments we offer and strive to continually improve our services. We therefore welcome your feedback. This can be done by telephone, email, or in person when you're in the Practice. We also have a suggestions box on the front desk where feedback can be given anonymously.
