Dear Friends of EADS,
One person helping another is a magic formula. It can conjure up medicine, bread and blankets and deliver them to the other side of the planet.
We work local magic at EADS. We serve seniors and other adults in King and Kitsap counties who require round-the-clock care. Most have profound needs—either because of developmental disabilities or as a result of acquired disabilities such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, MS or traumatic brain injuries. We serve them lunch, administer medications, provide therapy, change dressings...Whatever they need.
We encourage our participants’ engagement in the world around them by focusing their attention on this moment, this experience and the people we are with today. This focus often reduces anxieties and helps them engage the world in new ways.
When he first came to EADS, one young man was afraid of everyone. He was so wary of others that he always kept a piece of furniture between himself and anyone else in the room. It took months of patient, loving ther-apy to coax a smile out of him. But it came. It is a joy now to see him laugh-ing and talking with others at lunch. That is EADS magic.
Another participant, a senior with dementia, was too weak to get out of her wheelchair when she started in our S.A.I.L. exercise pro-gram. With time and encouragement, she was able to stand again, then walk with a walker and then, finally, to her delight, to walk with only a cane. More EADS magic.
Your contribution to EADS helps us help work our magic with people who are mostly off the world’s radar—seniors nearing the end of life and younger adults with disabilities.
Please give generously. Not because you have to...not because you ought to...but because you can.
PS. Please click on this link http://www.eads-cares.org/ or use the form on the back page to donate to EADS.
PPS. Your donation will help offset hundreds of thousands of dollars in reduced state and federal funding for our programs.

Warmest regards,
2010 Accomplishments We got a facelift in 2010. Our Bellevue and Des Moines facilities were in disrepair. The paint was tired, the door frames were battered, the carpeting was stained and torn. The nurse’s office in our Bellevue center was awful. Our staff were embarrassed and concerned about the impression our facilities made on visitors and the message it sent to our participants. But, thanks to our donors and a volunteer painting crew—including many of the board members named at left—both buildings are gleaming now, just like their sister center on Bainbridge Island. Caring for Caregivers. This comprehensive suite of free caregiver support services began in December. It includes classroom training, one-on-one coun-seling, respite care, and fitness training—all provided free to caregivers thanks to a grant from the United Way of King County.
We provided over 100,000 hours of therapeutic care. We serve over 100 clients a day. Most have a complex mix of intellectual, physical and psycho-social needs. Meeting those needs requires an interdisciplinary team approach. Nursing. Recreational therapy. Counseling. Occupational therapy. All play a vital role. The impact can be astounding. One of our participants has an aversion to being touched. She won’t even let staff clip a name tag on her shirt. When she works on puzzles with another participant, she’s careful not to touch him or be touched by accident. Then one day, after weeks of work, she and her partner completed a difficult puz-zle. His hand shot into the air for a celebratory High Five. It hung there for a second or two—waiting—and then she smiled and slapped her palm against his. That’s one hour of care. One story. We have 99,999 more.
