PEMDAS is an acronym (a quick, shortened word that stands for a longer word or a longer title/set of directions, etc.) to help you solve long mathematical problems! PEMDAS stands for:

What does this mean? This means that when you are faced with solving a problem that is very large and has many steps, you will know which parts of the long mathematical equation to solve first and in what order. This will always give you the right answer!

The trick to remember is this: anything in parentheses must be solved first. Always solve the equations inside of the parentheses first, including all addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Exponents must be solved second, after you solve for the answer inside of the parenthesis. We won’t be using exponents here today, so we won’t worry about those. Multiplication and division are solved next, whichever comes first (left to right). Lastly, addition and subtraction are applied to the equation, whichever comes first (left to right).

Use PEMDAS to solve the equations below. Each numerical answer that you solve corresponds with a color! Each color is used to complete the color-by-number drawing seen in this work book. Solve all of the problems, match your answers to a color and then color the drawing to reveal a special, unique and wild friend that lives in New Mexico! Use the PEMDAS examples below to help you get started.

Example:

(1+6÷3) ÷ (6-5) = ?First, we must solve the parentheses! (1+6÷3) Inside of these parentheses are addition (+) and division (÷). Using PEMDAS, we know that division comes before addition, so we must solve 6 ÷ 3 first. 6÷3=2. Next, we complete the addition portion of the problem. 1+ (the answer from the division problem, which was 2). 1+2=3. Now we must solve for the other parentheses. All parentheses must be solved before we can continue. (6-5)=1. Okay, now we have 3, which we retrieved from this problem (1+6÷3), and 1, which we retrieved from this problem, (6-5). We can finally solve the problem, which is now 3÷1=3. The answer is 3!

Let’s do one more to help you get ready for this color-by-number!

3+4÷2-5 = ?First, we must solve the multiplication or division, whichever comes first (left to right). This means we must solve 4 ÷ 2, which equals 2. Now, we must solve addition or subtraction, whichever comes first (left to right). The addition (+) comes before the subtraction (-) in this equation, so we will be doing the addition first! 3 + (the answer you retrieved from solving 4 ÷ 2, which was 2) = 5. Now, let’s do the subtraction portion. 5 (the answer you retrieved from solving the addition problem, 3+2) minus (-) 5= 0. The answer is 0 (zero)!

Parentheses are solved first

Exponents are solved second

Multiplication is solved third/fourth

Division is solved third/fourth

Addition is solved fifth/last

Subtraction is solved fifth/last
