Starts with the San People in Africa1st Migration: along the Indian Ocean to Australia

Journey of ManJourney of Man 2nd Migration: North to Syria, where it splits

into interior Asia, where it splits again to Central Asia North of Afghanistan.

Niyazov: man in Kazakhstan directly descended from a man who is the ancestor of Europeans, Native Americans, Russians, Asians, and some Indians!

Migration of the Chukchi people from Central Asia to North America during the last glacial period.

800 years later, Chukchi descendents reached South America.

Catastrophe!Catastrophe! An 18-month dimming of the sun around 530 AD.

Cause: A dense vale of dust in the air blocking the sun’s rays

Cause: A dense vale of dust in the air blocking the sun’s rays

•Cause of that? –Volcano, Asteroid, or Comet –Evidence points to Volcano

–Evidence for Volcano:•Sulfur in polar ice cores•Book of Kings•Charcoal Samples- not enough evidence to prove, but does not rule out

Catastrophe!Catastrophe! This event impacted the entire globe

with crop failure and sickness.

Cooler temperatures and unpredictable rainfall allow plague bacteria to grow and also increase rat population.

~This is relevant today because it shows one way in which climatic events impact disease. Sudden changes (both increases & decreases) in temperature and rainfall will impact both human health and crop production, and climatic change causes changes in both areas. This is significant to us because we are currently undergoing major climatic warming. ~

Guns Germs & SteelGuns Germs & Steel Guns, germs, and steel = military power, lethal microbes, & advanced technology Guns, germs, and steel = military power, lethal microbes, & advanced technology

The separation of the world into “have’s” and “have-not’s”

Why is it so unequal?

What is the origin of power?

“All great societies have had advanced technology, large populations, and a well organized workforce.

But how do these things come about?”

Guns, Germs, & SteelGuns, Germs, & Steel Main determining Factor: Geography!

Crop Agriculture and Domestication of Animals made it possible for some to

spend less time & energy feeding themselves; thus they were able to put time & energy into advancing

technologically.
