Fun at work - the misconceptionsA lot of people see ‘fun’ as the very opposite of work. They eagerly wait to clock off at 5pm so that work ends and fun begins.
But can fun have a place in the modern workplace, and here’s why we think you should consider it.

It’s not one size fits all
Employees have different interpretations of workplace fun. These include:
Social fun - the work environment and spending time with colleagues
Work fun - interesting and fulfilling work
To implement fun you first need to understand your employees and their motivations.

Probation
You could give them a final opportunity to improve their perfor-mance, by issuing a formal warning or placing them on proba-tion.
Probation should be for a fixed period of time. You should let the employee know what improvement you expect and provide sup-port, such as training, to achieve it. Depending on the terms of the employment contract, you may be able to withhold certain benefits and provide shorter notice of dismissal while the em-ployee is on probation. Make sure you have this all formally re-corded and refer to it at each 1-2-1 or appraisal.
Allow people to have fun
It’s essential that you allow people to have fun and show that fun isn’t a top down thing - it can just happen.
This trust empowers staff to come up with their own fun activities, creating a more relaxed and engaged workforce.

Fun can be simple
You don’t need an office slide or a ping pong table to create a sense of fun, belonging and engagement. Introducing fun can be a simple process and can be centred on easy-to-organise activities.
Here are some fun ideas that could work for you:
Lottery syndicates
Charity/fundraising days
Bake Off days
Computer games
Team sports
Fantasy football league
Yoga/pilates
Dress down Friday
Office parties/nights out
A pool table
An office pet
Wellbeing days
‘Gameification’ or fun via work itself - such as targets and incentives for reaching them

Games
At BrightHR we have a table tennis table, a football goal, computer consoles and board games around the office. They provide a great opportunity to take five minutes away from your desk, to collaborate, as team building exercises, to build relationships or even just to unwind over lunch.

Office Games
During the Olympics we held our own office games where people could get involved in a number of office based competitions. This was a great way to build a competitive team spirit, to get people from different departments communicating and to boost staff moral. What’s more it only took 10 mins out of the day.

Office shout outs
We have a ‘shout out’ box on reception were anyone can submit a shout out to someone who has gone above and beyond, is generally brilliant or is showing some serious talent. All shouts are read out at our monthly company wide meeting, no matter if they are serious or more light-hearted. It’s a great way to recognise the work employees do but also to have some fun.
