Electronics is

• The branch of science and technology that deals with controlling electricity.

Page 4: What is electronics year 2

What is electricity?• The word electricity comes from the Latin electrum, which comes from the Greek word ἤλεκτρον (elektron), meaning amber.

• Origin of the Greek word is unknown, but may have come from Phoenician word elēkrŏn, meaning ‘shining light’.

• Phoenician is similar to Hebrew and in Hebrew, el means God.

• The original meaning of electricity may literally be ‘power of God’.

Page 5: What is electronics year 2

Electric vs. Electronic

• Electric circuits and systems are used to manage power.

• Electronic circuits and systems are used to manage information.

Page 6: What is electronics year 2

Why is electronics important?

• Moving objects have kinetic energy and can be used to do work, therefore, electricity can be used to do work for us.

• What do we use electricity for?

• What do we use electronics for?

We also learned about some components used to control these 4 fundamental properties and the tools needed to work with electronics.

We will learn more components this year.

Last year you learned to interpret circuitdiagrams and lay out circuits.

We will learn some common circuits used to combine components into useful tools.

Understanding the fundamentals, the components and the circuits, enables you to understand, design, build, and repair electronic systems.

We will focus on powerand communication, 2systems that depend onAlternating Current (AC).

Electronics is• The branch of science and technology that deals

with controlling electricity.• Arguably the most important contributor to the

development of our modern world.• Of huge importance to modern communication,

energy, industry, medicine, travel, defense, entertainment, in short, our modern way of life.

• The largest single industry in the world.• An excellent career choice.• A mystery to most people, but not to you!• Lots and lots of fun!
