The Auxiliary Scholarship Committee (Patsy Ferguson, Gail Griggs, Peggy Lott, Carla Perry, and Bobbie Thomas) met with

Raymond White June 22 at the Tennessee Engineering Center to review applications and select the 2009 Dorothy and Arthur Crouch Memorial Scholarship recipient.

This year’s scholarship award went to Robert Evans of Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville. Mr. Evans is a rising senior working toward a degree in Civil Engineering.

He is a member of ASCE and serves as chapter secretary for Tau Beta Pi. He has also played varsity football at TTU for 2 years, while maintaining a GPA of 3.97.

While in high school he worked summers with a general contractor. As a college student he interned in 2008 with C. J. Mahan Construction Company, an engineering firm, working on the Chickamauga Lock Replacement, Cofferdam, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Mr. Evans duties included quality control work, AutoCad work, and experiencing the general work of a project engineer. His supervisor described Mr. Evans as a quick learner and dedicated worker who performed and understood the process of interpreting contract plans and specifications. He also commended Mr. Evans’ ability to communicate well with office and field employees.

Besides his work experience and university studies, Mr. Evans has found time to contribute as a council representative with the Presbyterian Student Association, assist with hurricane relief work in Houma, LA, and participate in intramural sports at TTU.

Mr. Evans has shown high academic achievement, and a passion for becoming a professional engineer. He is the high caliber individual that we are pleased to support.

Pat Wiggins (Sullivan Engineering) in great form while Eric Gardner (City of Franklin) and Colby Cratin and Ken Ellzy (Hart Freeland Roberts) watch at the TEF Golf Tournament.

During the past year TEF’s efforts have centered on college scholarships for engineering students and establishing a mechanism to partner with professional society local chapters

or other groups raising funds to promote engineering in education.TEF is in discussions with three other organizations who we hope will choose TEF to

administer their college scholarship programs. The Board is planning, during the coming year, to increase its efforts to encourage engineering firms, professional organizations, and allied businesses to establish engineering scholarships in partnership with TEF. We are exploring the possibility of grant funds for scholarships or education programs from government and foundation sources. We are also in preliminary conversations with an independent organization whose purpose is to raise funds and volunteers to enhance STEM education in K-12 school curricula. The downturn in the investment markets has had a negative impact on scholarship endowments so developing additional sources of funds is important to the increasing achievement of our mission. All chapters are encouraged to consider the TEF as a partner to enable tax-deductible contributions to their programs.

Engineers are Funny, Too!TheEngineer’sGuideto ChocolateChip CookiesINGREDIENTS: 1. 532.35 cm3 gluten 2. 4.9 cm3 NAHCO3 3. 4.9 cm3 refined halite 4. 236.6 cm3 partially hydrogenated tallow triglyceride 5. 177.45 cm3 crystalline C12H22011 6. 177.45 cm3 unrefined C12H22011 7. 4.9 cm3 methyl ether of protocatechuic aldehyde 8. 2 calcium carbonate-encapsulated avian albumen-coated protein 9. 473.2 cm3 theobroma cacao 10. 236.6 cm3 de-encapsulated legume meats (sieve size#10)

DIRECTIONS: 1. To a 2-L jacketed round reactor vessel (reactor #1) with an overall Heat transfer coefficient of about 100 Btu/F-ft2-hr, add ingredients one, two and three with constant agitation. 2. In a second 2-L reactor vessel with a radial flow impeller operating at 100 rpm, add ingredients four, five, six and seven until the mixture is homogenous. 3. To reactor #2, add ingredient eight, followed by three equal volumes of the homogenous mixture in reactor #1. Additionally, add ingredient nine and ten slowly, with constant agitation. Care must be taken at this point in the reaction to control any temp- erature rise that may be the result of an exothermic reaction. 4. Using a screw, extrude attached to a #4 nodulizer, place the mixture piece-meal on a 316SS sheet (300x600mm). Heat in a 460K oven for a period of time that is in agreement with Frank & Johnston’s first order rate expression (see JACOS, 21, 55), or until golden brown. 5. Once the reaction is complete, place the sheet on a 25C heat-transfer table allowing the product to come to equilibrium.
