FRONTER

When evaluating the progress of my understanding relating the required software to complete my coursework of a high standing, I would have to begin with the ‘Fronter’ website where the full content of work is situated. Through the course of 3 months, I have gained an extensive understanding of how it functions such as knowing how to create individual links which helped individualise mine and my partners work, this worked as an advantage as we were able to share and look over our work quickly and efficiently which will also benefit the examiner when marking. The questionnaire tool installed into Fronter had made it easy to gather up results from our target market to contribute towards the development of the magazines. Another beneficial feature was the visual display of the external sources as it showed the photograph or video itself rather than a URL link; this allowed my work to be resented neatly and have a more professional appeal. Through this process, I am now able to successfully create a website with a functional navigation in order to create ease for the user.

PRELIMINARY TASK- ANALYSIS

For the initial plans, I needed to use Adobe Photoshop which I have never worked with before, therefore fund it quite difficult to navigate at first. However through the assistance of the teachers and helping tutorial found online I had gained a better understanding of how to carry out basic tasks such as creating text boxes and changing their colour or adding text. Having had used Photoshop before beginning the preliminary task (in the initial ideas) the format and expectations were different therefore took me some getting used to the codes of the software. By examining closely, the first and second draft of the cover page look quite similar however the page sizing was incorrect making the overall appeal look of an immature standard; this was due to me opening up the main photograph by itself without having a page to support it, this means my canvas was the picture instead of an A4 page. When having met with my partner, we had discussed the changes which can be made to both the pages in order to show consistency in the magazine. Consequently, we came to the decision to change the masthead the same font and size to establish our house style, also have the same colour scheme running through both our pages. A strapline had also been used in order follow the codes and conventions of a stereotypical magazine. The strapline may not always be incorporated in a school magazine; however it gave me the knowledge of how to apply this feature in the drafts of the music magazine. Another development was the erasing of unnecessary writing “It’s the winter issue” this addition made it look more cluttered also a different font was used which surpassed the expected number of fonts; which is 3 maximum. Finally, a further photographed been added in order to conform to the codes required; this help foreshadow the inside content of the issue.

MAIN TASK – COVER PAGE

At the beginning of the process, it was evident that I had not possessed a wide knowledge on the appropriate Layout of the main photograph as it does not gain much dominance over the whole cover; other aspects as headlines and additional photos seem to overpower the main focus. Also I was not aware of how erase the background of the photograph, leaving the overall presentation looking very unprofessional and immature like. However in the second draft, the cover page had starting to somehow gain a better imitation of a magazine due to the simplistic background which is often found in rock magazines. Tools such as the ‘dodge, burn and sponge’ were applied to their faces in order to create a sense of editing to compliment the quality of the publication more. Having said this, in areas those tools have been overused as it had destroyed some features of the models. Finally, in the third draft all those mistakes have been resolved due to the tutorials of my teachers and the technician. The photo has been resized which allowed all the other features to work around it rather than overpowering the page with information. This too allowed me to apply my knowledge in the codes and conventions of a magazine as the hair of one of the models have covered a part of the masthead which more often than not occurs in any issue. Instead of using basic tools like the one mentioned previously, I then used Adjustments which introduced me a wide range of effects and filters to manipulate the picture to make it more professional. The background image has also been changed which shows a higher understanding of editing due to the gradient feature.

MAIN TASK – COVER PAGE

This code of the magazine had not been edited in too much depth as all the aspects remain in the same position, however in the second snapshot, which belongs to the third draft, I believe appeals better visually to our potential consumers.

By examining further into the features of a magazine, it came to my attention that not only the main image had been edited in depth to attract their costumers. Also with the headline belonging to the picture had advertised the ‘exclusiveness’ of it therefore it had to be edited in a way which support that. The tools ‘Lasso’ and Polygonal’ with the ‘Background Eraser’ had been used to used to remove background. Furthermore a blank layer had to added behind of the colour grey, after the gradient feature had been used to portray further skill.

The manner in which I had conducted myself in the first cover had not been very efficient as by the end there was no space for the barcode addition. On the other hand, when having to edit it I was aware of how to extract a barcode from the internet and add it to Photoshop, this allowed me to achieve a more authentic cover.

MAIN TASK- CONTENTS PAGE

1 2 3

The upper half of the contents page had gained a lot of development as in the last draft, the original model is not used. The meaning behind this decision is that her facial expressions did not support the captions used to support the article based on her; “the new face of rock” need to show the crazy and passionate expression of a rock artist. To compliment the front cover background, in the third draft, I had chose to use similar colours of blue and then manipulated again using the effects in the Adjustable option such as; Colour Balance and Vibrance.

MAIN TASK- DOUBLE PAGE SREAD

Through the process of creating the double page spread I had gained a wide knowledge on how to achieve a more visually appealing article by having all areas of it segregated from each other; the introduction and interview has a line between another, also there is one at the end of the written work to show that there will be no further information on the next page. I too learnt how add additional objects in the middle of the writing and have the interview work around it, however even with practice I had not been able to obtain a perfect curve around the red text back which had the quote inside.

By the first attempt of editing the image, a wide variety of effects have been added to show understanding. In the second draft I had duplicated the photograph by creating a new layer, the original had been edited using the blending option which fades it out into the background and the duplicated version was left plain. The final draft has an external source of image however has been edited to make it my own version. An addition has been added to increase the readers knowledge of who is being featured on the double page spread.
