Tuesday night, 32 New Castilians attended a standing room only forum on a proposed national park for Delaware. Held at A. I. Dupont High School, Senator Tom Carper chaired the meeting and began by giving an overview of a 12 year effort to establish a national park in the First State. Although Delaware has many historic sites and scenic shores, none of the 397 national park units is located in Delaware. Indeed, Delaware is the only state in the nation with no national park. Senator Chris Coons and Congressman John Carney gave updates on the status of a bill to designate 7 Delaware sites, including the Old Courthouse and theSheriff's House in New Castle, as a national park. However, these historic and cultural sites were barely mentioned in the meeting. Instead, most of the discussion centered around the 1,100 acre Woodlawn property, recently acquired by the Conservation Trust with the goal of preserving the land in perpetuity. The Trust has suggested that this beautiful parcel which borders the Brandywine River become part of the proposed national park. Many individuals, representing various non-profits, spoke in favor of including the Woodlawn property in the park. Some individuals expressed concern that certain favorite activities currently allowed on the parcel such as mountain biking and equestrian sports might not be allowed if the land becomes a national park. NP Service Director Jon Jarvis said those issues would be addressed and evaluated at a later date. Going forward, Senator Carper said the park could become a reality if the bill is passed. If the bill stalls in Congress, another way forward would be to have President Obama invoke the Antiquities Act of 1906 which allows the President to proclaim national monuments on land containing historic landmarks, historic and pre-historic structures, or other objects of historic and scientific interest. One significant change from the original proposal to turn these sites into a national park is who will own of these properties. These sites can be sold or donated to the National Park Service. Or, the parties can enter into a cooperative agreement where a site owner still retains ownership, but must come to resolution with the Park Service about historical upkeep, management, and public access. Summer Crops Were BIG Success!by The Old Scout
No question - in spite of drought, then rains, then more drought - summer 2012 was successful for the William Penn High School Penn Farm Project! Using non-chemical approaches to growing vegetables was a challenge, for sure - but the results were as good, or better, than expected. Especially gratifying were the really extraordinary crops of tomatoes and peppers.
Our students learned the modern techniques of mulching, irrigation and organic fertilization that carried us through the tough weather. And the weather wasn't just tough for the plants - but the crew endured some really brutal days. Some days working in over 105 heat index - yep, we sweated!
