What are fractions?

• They are used when we want to count how much of something we have when we don’t have the whole thing.

Numerator--------------------Denominator Represents the number of parts into

which the whole has been divided

Represents the number of partsof a whole we have.

Remember:

• A fraction must relate to something to have meaning – what is ½?

• We need to have ½ of something (the whole) for it to make sense:

½ a cup, ½ a tank of gas,½ an hour, or ½ an orange
