1,264 children and their families attended WGTE’s annual Family Fun Day on September 14 at Sylvania Tam-o-Shanter. Free and open to the public, the event was made possible by the Conda Family. Three stars from PBS Kids popular children’s programs, Super Why! and Peg + Cat were on hand to greet young fans. The afternoon

featured fun-filled, hands-on literacy, science and math activities. For the first time, WGTE FM broadcast live from Family Fun Day and featured performances by the Toledo School for the Arts’ Steel Drum Band.

Nearly 1,000 people attended more than 40 program preview events, held at WGTE Public Media and at public libraries throughout the region. Free and open to the public, these events offered sneak peeks at new seasons of “Downton Abbey,” “Wolf Hall,” “The Roosevelts,” as well as opportunities to enjoy classic episodes of WGTE’s “Toledo Stories.”

FM 91 hosts and volunteers greeted hundreds of festival-goers during live broadcasts from the Crosby Festival of the Arts at Toledo Botanical Gardens and Art on the Mall at the University of Toledo.

WGTE FM presented the first ever “Portraits in Swing LIVE!” concert at Centennial Terrace in Sylvania, featuring FM 91 host Larry Wagner and the Johnny Knorr Orchestra.

In December, WGTE hosted nearly 100 guests at a free, double-feature screening of two classic “Toledo Stories.” The event was underwritten by The Andersons, Inc. Charitable Foundation.

Watch! Bid! Buy! The TV 30 Auction Rewind relives the moments and memories of the TV 30 Auction. For thirty years WGTE, or Channel 30 as it was known then, annually dedicated more than a week of programming to fundraising with a live, televised auction. Staff members and an enthusiastic corps of volunteers planned, organized and auctioned off to the highest bidder a variety of products and services donated by local and national businesses.

This program is a walk down memory lane as it travels back to the first ever “Buy In” in 1968 to the “Last Great Auction” of 1998. You will meet some of the Auction’s most dedicated and memorable volunteers and hear the stories of all the fun, food and friendships, as told by those who made the TV 30 Auction a true Toledo Story.

Fair Housing: A Place to Call HomePremiered April 30, 2015The Toledo Fair Housing Center is dedicated to preventing any kind of housing discrimination. It is recognized as a national leader for its groundbreaking work in fair housing investigations, precedent-setting cases, enforcement, advocacy, training and outreach.

The U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1968 made it illegal to refuse to sell or rent a place to live to anyone based on race, color, sex, religion, national origin, familial status or disability. But that didn’t prevent discrimination.

“Fair Housing: A Place To Call Home” recounts the history of housing discrimination in the United States while profiling the origins and ongoing work of the Toledo Fair Housing Center. This fledgling organization founded in 1975 by a core group of concerned citizens had a central focus to expand equal housing opportunities for all people both locally and nationally. Today, the Toledo Fair Housing Center is recognized as a national leader for its fair housing investigations, precedent setting cases, enforcement, advocacy, training and outreach.

The program includes interviews with Shanna Smith, President and CEO of the National Fair Housing Alliance; Lisa Rice, Executive Vice President at the National Fair Housing Alliance and Michael Marsh, the President and CEO of the Toledo Fair Housing Center.

“Wildwood: Land as Good as Gold” recounts the origins of Wildwood Preserve and how the former R.A. Stranahan estate was nearly lost to a luxury real estate developer’s bulldozer.

The estate was acquired by Metroparks of the Toledo Area in 1975 after a hard fought grass roots effort. Today, Wildwood Preserve’s stately Manor House, surrounded by acres of natural habitat, is one of the region’s most popular attractions.

“Wildwood: Good as Gold” is illustrated with rare newsreel and personal film footage, archival photographs and contemporary High Definition footage, capturing all four seasons in Wildwood Preserve.

WGTE Town Hall: Dreams + Education = SuccessSpring 2015WGTE was chosen as one of just 13 public media markets in the nation to bring together community organizers, educators, parents and stakeholders to address issues surrounding academic success and graduation rates. In March, WGTE hosted a free screening and discussion of the PBS documentary “180 Days: Hartsville” at Holland Free Methodist Church. A week later, the “WGTE Town Hall: Dreams + Education = Success” brought together a live studio audience and a panel of faculty, administrators and parents from Holland Elementary School to discuss local efforts to improve public education. Viewers at home were able to interact by calling or emailing questions and comments during the broadcast.

Cancer: The Emperor of All MaladiesSpring 2015WGTE received a grant from WETA Public Media to produce five video podcasts, available at www.wgte.org, featuring cancer survivors and caregivers who shared their personal stories of coping with a devastating cancer diagnosis. WGTE collaborated with the Victory Center in Toledo for the project, which was inspired by the PBS premiere of the six-hour film “Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies,” from executive producer Ken Burns and director Barak Goodman.
